Probably? I watched it a couple years after I graduated High School, thought it was mostly only okay. I would even go so far as to say its only worth watching so you can watch End of Eva with (some) context. End of Eva isn't amazing, but the spectacle is really something. Komm Susser Todd is really tight.

It just doesn't lend itself well to a game format as an adaptation. The Angel fights were mostly gimmick based which isn't inherently an issue but the show spoils all the gimmicks so there's no real point. The only other option is some kind of dating sim which would obviously sell but still wouldn't be a good game.

The fact that so many books still name Neon Genesis Evangelion as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" anime ever only tells you how far anime still is from becoming a serious art. Film critics have long recognized that the greatest directors of all times are D.H.Griffith and John Ford, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Anime critics are still blinded by commercial success. Neon Genesis Evangelion sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore it must have been the greatest. Film critics grow up watching to a lot of films of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Anime critics are often totally ignorant of anime of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that Neon Genesis Evangelion did anything worthy of being saved.

It is all, literally, a matter of perspective.

There are as many truths as there are people.
