what are your thoughts on DQ XI? did you like the game? I just started playing, I'm about eight hours into it and I'm quite enjoying it so far.

I enjoyed it, it made me want to play the other DQ games. Tried dq3 hd-2d remaster didn't like it too much and now I'm playing dq4 (ds version), I'm 3 hours in and it's pretty charming so far I like the characters.
>>
It sure is a Dragon Quest game. That's a compliment, btw.
>>
>>750248712
My favorite DQ I've played other than 7. Good game overall. However, I dropped it in the 3rd act, the end of the 2nd act felt like a perfectly good place to end the game.
>>
>>750248712
great game
until a certain point
those who played know what I'm talking about
>>
>>750248712
I never played S because the doqngrade in graphics is not worth it.

Fuck the Switch and Fuck Square Enix.

What's the combination of game mechanics that makes this game stand out from other JRPGs and feel unique? I always saw DQ as "JRPG the Game".

>I always saw DQ as "JRPG the Game".
That's exactly what it is (complementary)
In the same way Tolkien is "Fantasy the Book"

Its the granddaddy of all JRPGs
>>
>>750251945
Is a fun JRPG that doesnt need 400 diferent RPG mechanics to be interesting.
>>
>>750251945
Unlike other JRPGs there is a chance bosses might take you a few tries if you don't grind. Aside from that, the real things that define it are Sugiyama's music, Toriyama's art, and the somewhat old-fashioned feeling that the writing has. It feels frozen in the 80s for lack of a better way to put it.
>>
I played it earlier this year and got bored as hell early on. I think it's more me that has gone off conventional JRPGs than the game.

The game isn't well designed. The JRPG dungeon mechanic creates some tension where you need to go through some area with one set of supplies. As far as I remember, DQ11 barely had this early on and the game was dominated by grinding next to towns. And then I set it to fast mode and the experience felt cheapened as well as boring.

Never finished it. Played about ten hours waiting for the story or any single character to grab me and it just never did.
Like>>750250583 said, it's definitely a Dragon Quest game, but my primary issue is that because of the increasing emphasis on the visuals and cutscenes/dialogue as the series progresses, it feels like there's just so much time spent doing absolutely nothing. Maybe I should have played the 2D version of it, I don't know, I'm not sure I care enough. DQ was fun when I played it at 12-13.

It's very straightforward yet really good in every way. I teared up a bit during the ending.

>What's the combination of game mechanics that makes this game stand out from other JRPGs and feel unique?
-It has the best exploration in the entire genre and makes discovering stuff interesting throughout most of each game in ways that most JRPGs rarely do, there's tons of discovery and emphasis on NPC interaction and puzzle solving
-Typically much more interesting resource economy than most JRPGs, you have limited item slots on your characters and so have to make the most of what you have available instead of relying on huge stacks of items
-Equipment is usable and often swappable mid battle
-In later games (like XI) party members are also swappable, and any party member can be swapped on any character's turn to boot
-Crafting is often very interesting and you often have tons of ways to explore how to get items, with VIII's alchemy pot being the peak of this
-Status effects are super useful and you will want to figure out how to take advantage of this for bosses

Very cozy and trad JRPG. I spent a lot of time in Cobblestone thinking what I would have done if I live there before I started with the main quest proper.

Also Mrs. De Guzman seems to be eager to get promoted. I mean, she is ready for her next promotion.

Surely grok can fix this issue.

I think JRPGs range from bad to mediocre with no exceptions, but this won me over anyway on sheer charisma. It didn't escape from the usual genre shortcomings, but it made that experience as palatable as possible.

That's because Dragon Quest is actually just good, unlike most of the genre. There's a reason why Japnese rate the series more highly than everything else. It has more meat and less fluff.
>>
I tried playing this game but the music is truly awful to be honest
I don't think this composer even plays the video games that he jams his loud orchestral garbage into

That's accurate, didn't know if that was a DQ thing or specific to DQ11. The problem is it's an on-rails anime with little player or skill expression and with a bloated runtime, like every other JRPG. I'd describe it as a flawed premise executed almost perfectly.
>>
>>750254665
Sticking to the same core formula and iterating upon it allows for a lot of time to refine things over decades. The games feel same-y, but in an almost comforting way. The chicken soup of JRPGs.

Like someone raised on DQ11 could easily go back and play DQ2 and not feel too much like a fish out of water.

Conversely, it's closest contemporary, Final Fantasy, has been having an ongoing identity crisis both mechanically and aesthetically ever since they briefly reversed-course with FF10. So what games you'll enjoy in that franchise will often be influenced by which mainline entry you played first.

I didn't like it that much.
>normal difficulty is braindead easy, you can auto-battle the entire game
>restart on stronger monsters
>stronger monsters is like SMTV on hard mode except:
>all support skills incl buffs, debuffs and even REVIVES are RNG
>yes, you get a 30% chance to CC the boss and steamroll, or it will wipe you in the first 2 rounds
>someone died? no worries, roll a 50/50 to resurrect them
Asinine.

But what about the story? The story is bad like all the other Jap games aimed at teens.
>>
>>750248712
it's great overall but somehow they fucked up overworld encounters once again after fucking it up in VIII 3DS and fixing it in IX, the dungeons just mostly suck but I don't have any problem with anything else I don't think
>>
>>750248712
The story is executed in a bland way.
>>
Great game. A bit long in the tooth even for a Dragon Quest game. I doubt as many people would complain about act 3 if it was just a simple victory lap and wasn't about as long as act 2 was. Still one of my favorite games in the series.

I thought the characters were lame, and the story was boring.

I quit at the end of Act 2 because I didn't want to play anymore
