Valve is smart enough to realize their pro-consumer attitude (compared to the rest of the industry) is what keeps them alive. If they started dicking over consumers to the point of open grumbling, there's 20 million companies at the ready to try and replace Steam.

CS2 is compleyely full of cheaters and bots. They don't even care about hiding. There are guys from Russia on YouTube giving tours of giant bot farms. One farm operates more than 100k bots. So when you look at the /v/-famous Steam charts, that's where the player count comes from.

Recently Valve legally went after a cheat dev in Russia. Do you know which one? They went after the fucking (fully client-side) skin changer "cheat". That was their priority. Changing a texture on a gun. That's what they're worried about.

More recently Valve started VAC banning but the cheaters are already back. The ban wave was just a psyop so all the Valve shills can make videos and shit like "OMG heckin based Valve finally fixed CS2 cheaters BTFO". I don't think it even last a week. Pure psyop.

Finally the chicken update. What was Valve's response to farming bots in every fucking game? Guilt trip legit players with a cute chick so they pick feed drops and sacrifice stuff with value. Genius.

Epic doesn't believe in transparency and customer rights, they are trying to pander to publishers.
That's why they don't allow user reviews or information about concurrent players.

Competing with Valve on service is a lost cause, because trying to do exactly what Valve is doing is already inherently untrustworthy and annoying.
Valve gets away with it because they solved all of the 2000s publishers being complete ass at actually selling you games with no hassle, so anyone trying to do the same thing now is just making everything worse unless they stick with it through years of teething pains.
Trying to actually compete on service lands you with GOG and Itch's profit margins.

Literally says on the bottom that 30% is the industry standard. Timmy tried to take a lower cut and he lost hundreds of millions of dollars.
>>

This, and any AAA game only has to accept a 20% tax, as it's virtually impossible to not gain 50 millions as a big studio unless it's a Concord-tier disaster. And you have to keep in mind that going through Steam means not having to pay physical retailers and transportation and manufacturing which all cost way more, and Steam doesn't have a time limit, they'll host your games forever and personally suffer the infrastructure continuous cost.
>>
Reminder that 30% only became a problem when Timmy started crying about Steam using it (again, industry standard rate) only to bring attention to his shitty store using a lower rate and it got picked up by game journos and industry kikes begging people to care about the heccin wholesome innocent game deverinos

>much smaller selection of games
>you can call yourself lucky if some recent game actually does same time updates for Steam and GoG, often you get treated like a secondary citizen and patches & DLC's arrive with at least a week or two of delays or the devs just give up on patching the GoG version entirely (like it happened with Death Road to Canada which at this point will maybe reach 2 years of being behind Steam soon)
>sometimes the GoG version will also arrive bugged and never get fixed (like the GoG Skyrim version that still has a memory leak)
>flooded with garbage WEG's and pornoslop that CAN'T be permanently filtered out with one click like on Steam
>GoG Galaxy still is a pretty mediocre launcher
>also GoG Galaxy STILL runs on pretty flimsy and fragile servers that struggle to download games at higher speed then can randomly decide to break and make you offline (often will bug out the launcher and make you unable to connect until you reset the launcher), if it happens during a download it will fail and have to be retried from start, have fun when that will happen with nearly 100 gig games
>also for some reason my AV has a issue with Galaxy and tried to interrupt downloading random games with false detections despite it not happening on Steam
>yeah you could download offline installers instead but then you basically just get a piracy-like experience of having to download games in individual 4GB max parts, enjoy doing that with some big game
GOG is great for old vidya, but trying to become a "serious big boy game store" was a mistake.

The famous Gabe quote of "Piracy is a service problem" was something Steam came up with while trying to convince devs to allow Steam to severely cut their prices to make inroads to the Russian market which was previously entirely piracy based.
This was a fabulously successful endeavour which resulted in Russian key resellers, Russian bot farms and Russia being the second largest community of third worlders on Steam after Americans.

No they fucking don't. Sony's is dogshit and Nintendo doesn't have a real refund policy at all and instead just use a loophole to get around it. Valve was the one who did this refund policy first and the rest, like Microsoft and Epic, adopted it after the fact. Very few have a more lenient refund policy.

it's both Australia and the EU. Valve was being sued in Australia, meanwhile the EU had just passed a law in 2014 mandating a 14-day refund policy for digital goods. so Valve saw the writing on the wall and adapted their refund policy.

Steam takes 15% on community market trades which are high frequency/low revenue transactions.
compared to game sales 30% which are low frequency/high revenue.
mods would be low frequency/low revenue so they'd probably price the cut at 45-50%

My best guess is steam isn't as profitable as people think. Think about it, you get a 30% cut for
game's sales but then have to pay to have the game hosted and downloadable.... forever. That cost will make a decent dent into the profit you made sooner or later.

It's easy to think something prints money if you only look at revenue and completely ignore the cost to deliver the service.

Tim shills don't even try to make arguments anymore, they just repeat the same dozen lies in the most schizo shitpost way possible and spam it all day. This is the results of 8 years, fucking EIGHT YEARS of Tim with infinite money trying to build something that would overtake Steam. He learned from none of their experiences, took 3 years to implement a shopping cart, and 8 years after releasing his slop launcher, some basic bitch AI apparently did a better job than his own engineers, and he is asking us to trust AI code reviewed by retards to handle credit card data. Meanwhile Tim spends his days seething on twitter about Gabe, calling him "the other guy" like a scorned teenage girl.

This, but also, Steam is the one that started it all, of course they didn't think of everything, they had to innovate and slowly build up, Steam is so loved because they overwhelmingly took decisions that improved the software and the UX. Meanwhile every other company just saw Steam's numbers and made a quick and dirty spyware shitty launcher with 0 features solely to avoid paying Steam, learning nothing from them and obviously being solely after your cash with a cold and sterile behavior. Who the fuck wants to install "bland goyware#865 so the CEO gets more money" on their computer? Who wants to do that for multiple different games?

In the case of something like Uplay, if its a first party game then because Ubisoft could opt to not take the 30% cut in order to sell it cheaper since its their own game anyway.
In the case of a third party game on one of those stores then steams correct.

They could, but then they'd be abusing Steam's visibility in order to get sales that don't bring Steam money. No store owner is going to let you just post your own ads on their front window without getting anything worthwhile in return.

Nah the 14 day return right without needing a reason is specifically an EU regulation. What valve did can easily be seen as them taking the easiest option for them. Just offer it up for everyone. Especially since trying to figure out if a game was actually broken would be an insane amount of work on their part.

>>
>>750272016
Thats fair, but its also fair to say why shouldn't ubisoft be able to price a game on their store so that they make the exact same profit from the sale as steam.
Realistically every game they sell on steam earns them 30% less than the same game sold on uplay, if they had a discount on their own store that was 30% they would make the exact same profit as a sold copy on steam.
>>
>>750272321
As I always say, the 2 best general options to get games are either Steam for all the useful features, or piracy for the free games. These do not clash in any way, Steam has never done anything against piracy, therefore there is no rational reason for any PC user to hate Steam. Anti-Valve posting cannot be anything else but shills.

Real answer?

Private company.

That's it. That's the whole reason. A publicly traded company is legal obligated to do everything in its power to keep making the numbers go up. Short term. There is no such thing as long-term planning and stability. They will replace their best employees with cheaper indians, wedge advertisements everywhere, put women in management positions for DEI-blackrock-bucks, etc. They *have* to keep the numbers going up or they can get sued by shareholders. They have NO choice.

Valve is private. They have no obligation. They can plan for stability and long-term goals without stressing over short-term profits. They can eat 3 non-profitable quarters in a row without sweating just because it's part of their plan. A publicly traded company can't.
>>
>>750272585
Theres not a single company that has actively improved its products by becoming publically traded.
The stock market should be banned.
>>
>>750272443
Because every game on Steam is something weighing down their infrastructure forever unless the game is taken down and even then, those who bought it still have it and Steam must still provide it. Steam isn't some physical store where you agree to host copies of CoD#24 for a month. Encouraging predatory practices using Steam's visibility and infrastructure solely to shill another launcher is a very dangerous road, and users don't even want that, nobody wants to have to install more launchers, remember that virtually every big game that isn't on Steam comes with a dedicated shitty spyware launcher worsening your UX.

>Move games forward after John Carmike open sourced quake
>Your niche grows and you find yourself through basic market forces 3 decades later as the dominant force despite some issues along the way with lootboxes, which no one really gives two shit about.

>This make browns and fags seethe infinitely as the one company that isn't fucking them over 100% is actually preferred by most people who get a taste of it

I have no skin in the game because im an advocate for piracy anyway as anyone should be especially since we're discussing self interest, and I did say that your argument made sense from valves self interest, but you should acknowledge what I said makes sense from ubisofts self interest.
>>
>>750272798
>you should acknowledge what I said makes sense from ubisofts self interest.
Of course, but the emphasis of your question was on why Steam won't let them do what you described. Visibility and trust is worth a lot, and Steam slowly built that over the years, nobody is preventing companies like Ubisoft from doing the same, but every single option except GoG has been a blatantly obvious "we want more money" software that in no way tried to provide any benefit to the user, and actively damages the UX through both inconvenience and security risks.

As for self-interest, I love piracy but it has a couple of issues for your own convenience, mainly that games are not auto-updated and you have to be wary of a potential virus each time and are dependent on someone else uploading the new build, and of course that you don't get access to multiplayer. In those cases, getting it on Steam at a good price is way more convenient, which I think is one of the reasons some indies EA do so well, paying 10 bucks for a constantly updated game that's already decent is a good deal for most people.

>lootboxes
Genuinely, as someone who only encountered lootboxes through Overwatch, the hyperfocus on them seems silly. There have been a ton of uber predatory lootbox systems, but the things themselves aren't an issue, you could (and I did) easily get mountains of skins in OW and any duplicate got converted to a fair amount of in-game currency to buy more skins. If a company wants to fuck you over with skins, it doesn't need lootboxes to do it, MTX work just as well, and retards will pay 500 bucks for an Ahri skin in LoL.

It's the predatory bullshit that often accompanies it that's the issue, not the existence of boxes.
