Forest gnomes are in touch with magic and nature and can naturally speak to animals, while rock gnomes are tinkerers and can make a bunch of funny little contraptions. BG3 made the short races look kind of retarded, but in tabletop you can look however you want. One of my first D&D characters was a gnome wizard named Snickerdoodle and he basically looked like a Taru.
