Freespace 2 did that for me. I spent a whole day on a friday after getting home from school playing it, and it didn't hook me because it was quite honestly a lot to take in.

1 year later, my friend goes on to tell me its the best game she's ever played, so I went back to it, and just pushed through most of the tedious stuff. Turns out she was right.

DRG. Initially thought
>oh wow its like a 20€ overhyped game with 10h worth of content that repeats itself
Then tried it again after seeing some threads on /v/ and plopped 2.2k hours in it. Real shame about Rogue Core, and for the wasted potential it had.

sekiro
hated it at launch, no build variety, no weapons, no pvp, cheated to beat isshin just to wrap it up
went back a year later
everything just clicked, found it 100x more fun than my first playthrough, ended up preferring limiting player agency because they can focus on fun and challenging encounters

Funny way of saying "we put a bunch of systems in the game but made 90% of them dogshit and 9% works in specific situations only".
I have never played worse stealth gameplay in a game claiming to feature it. The ONLY mechanic that is fully developed is parrying, everything is about parrying and doing anything outside of parrying, including all of the stealth and platforming, is shit.

TWEWY and OOT
TWEWY is just awful at the start, shitty protagonist, shitty touch screen slop combat, annoying soundtrack, I dropped the game twice. Then I played further and further and now it's my favorite game of all time. The game picks up hard near day 5 and only gets better and better.
OOT was similar, took me like 5 deku/goron dungeon clears to finally get hooked, now it's my second favorite game of all time. Still not playing the dogshit remake, MM3D already raped me hard enough

I wouldn't trust anyone whose opinions are so mercurial that they can go from "quickly dropped" to "masterpiece" just like that. I just hit the Gargoyles-Capra Demon wall and after a few attempts of each decided I wasn't having fun doing these annoying runbacks over and over. It didn't help that I didn't know about either poise or rolling, which, like I say, I still think the game does a poor job of conveying basic mechanics to new players (and Capra Demon is still awful).
>>
>>750264050
I like it. It's a cool runback with lots of hidden thieves ambushing you in a narrow alleyway where you barely have room to maneuver past them. They've never really been able to replicate that feel in future games in the genre. Every area is just obscenely large so you can run circles around every enemy.

I've learned to just start that runback from Firelink; it's slightly longer but there's no risk of getting bodyblocked by those fucking dogs. I can appreciate liking slightly more dangerous runbacks but the punishment for getting poise broken by the dogs followed by CD itself being a bit of a coin flip is just too much.

Getting ambushed and cheapshotted is the name of the game, and the capra folds quickly once the dogs are gone. I actually had much more trouble with the gaping dragon because I was still fatrolling, so that sudden tailwhip would oneshot me.

This one is quite frequent. Happened to me as well.
Typically you spend hours and get frustrated for not being spoonfed a plot.
Then you come week/month/year back later, this time you reread the data you discovered, you start putting together what happened yourself, you try to solve the time loop, and then you understand what every themes of the game were leading to.

I think part of the fun with UT/DR comes from speculating and lore analysis. But once the last chapter is out, the fun will disappear. Also it's not fun to binge in one sitting. I can stomach maybe 1-2 chapters at a time. I also hate how the mechanics are arbitrary between chapters; some items have silent nerfs for no reason, and even the bonus boss of ch4 silently changes the scaling on Susie's healing

One thing I love about LM1 is that each zone's map fits into a 5x4 region, and has backside, and each zone is enumerated (1-8). Very clean, symmetrical design, and while the movement is stiff, areas and puzzles are built around it and the movement itself can be like a micro-puzzle. I think it's more like Myst meets Kaizo Mario. As much as I like it, I think the remake aged poorly, even if it's designed to be retro style.

Meanwhile, LM2 is better in every way: mechanically, movement, narrative, knowing where to go, etc, but the way the overall maps link up doesn't feel as satisfying to me. You have like 9 fronts and 5-6 backsides? And the backsides are where the behelit is used after? The arrangement of the fields on the wiki seems coincidental too (the corridor or blood is a hexagram as well, but zones like the Tower of Oannes weren't originally in the game and it doesn't hit the middle ones)

Dark Souls is the biggest one. Maybe Deadlock counts, I went from "it looks fine just not for me" to "it looks pretty good maybe I should try it".

I've had this happen more with manga. It took me two tries to get into JJBA because I genuinely don't find the first two parts that interesting and when I was a teenager I found myself in a lot of fanboy flame wars shitting on manga I never even read only to end up regretting it when I finally did. But the biggest one was Jujutsu Kaisen. I read the entire manga from start to finish and thought it was funny-bad, like Kubo trying to write Hunter x Hunter. But I heard so many people talking about things that I didn't remember, so 6 months later I read through it again and now I love it. I've never had such a complete 180 before. I don't know how it happened, I honestly can't explain it. Maybe it depends on the translation you read?

Sadly, I haven't been having as much fun in SF6. Even if it's similar, something feels off. Maybe it's because of how random the game feels with Drive Rush? The flow of the game just doesn't feel the same.

It doesn't really respect your time.
In several places if you fuckup once in some minor way your entire run can be bricked and you have to redo the same 1000 levels again.

Sure there are skips, but the player isn't going to know about them till later.
Still had fun in the end, but there was more than a little bit of spite involved.

Also I worked out the teleport early and pmuch skipped most of the other character's runs.

Viscera Cleanup Detail. Got filtered by the fact that you have to put boxes and barrels in their respective zones and fill out the PIDs for a perfect score. Came back about a year later and have now done just about every level, only excluding the low/zero grav ones because fuck those ones.

This, way too console feeling. When I first started playing I wished Witcher 3 could have the Mount & Blade combat/melee system instead. Immediately would make it a 1000% better game.

Elden Ring. I guess I just don't have the patience for games like that anymore. I don't feel like spending hours learning a dance, then moving on to the next one.

death stranding

I gave up on it about 5 hours in at release. Epic gave it away for free years later on pc so I gave it another shot. Fell in love. I still haven't played 2 though.

I was a bit worried about it having only one planet but it was quite excellent
I still jam to the river theme from time to time. Also the cosmic pessimism vs optimism was interesting.
I spent hours stopped on the fucking puzzle where you have to wait for the dam to break to "kill" the owls in the simulation so that you can go through

i put hundreds of hours into MH3U for 3ds. it 1000% had underwater combat. i assume the wiiu version did too... that would be weird if they changed it. some monsters like that elder dragon you have to fight totally underwater. you must be misremembering something.

nioh 1
I did like it at first but i was playing other games when I tried it so I soft dropped it then picked it backe up again recently.
honestly if anyone here hasnt tried it, do it. It's a pretty good action rpg, way more satisfying combat than any souls shit and apparently it gets insane in both ng+ and nioh 2.
Im 2/3 aof the way in, probably will finish it next week.
>>
>>750261428
I actually don't think that has ever happened to me.
>>
>>750266615
It not only still had underwater combat, 3U even added some new underwater monsters. It's the only game that lets you chase Plesioth into the water for example (as base 3 did not feature it), Lagiacrus has 2 different subspecies with a land and underwater moveset focus respectively, and the final boss was some fat black dragon you had to fight by diving into its hot tub.
As >>750289712 mentioned the whale dragon that's the final fight for the village quests (and also the last fight before G-rank iirc) is also completely underwater. Basically completely impossible to have 3's content without also incorporating underwater combat.
The Wii U game was also basically just a wholesale port of the 3DS game so no difference there.

Most I can give you is that 3U deemphasized that part of the game by having so many monsters you just don't fight in/near water at all, but 3U absolutely had water fights.

>Thoughts on the dlc
Well, you played it, so why would you need my thought? (you won't carry mine in the Eye anyway)

It's thematically perfection, it answer every remaining plot point, and the reels are so damn fitting.

That said I would have improved it with making you activate things in the real world to create bridge in the dreamland since gameplay is limited in there, also would give you extra dev-mode when far from the lantarn and it was very difficult to find some stuff.
I also FAILED to discover the most important getting away from the lantern by accident because I was killed too close of it.
Kind of a bummer because that's a critical aspect.
