Why the fuck is it rated so highly? I love CRPGs but Dragon Age gameplay is just awful. Gameplay in the Pathfinder games looks like a masterpiece in comparison.

Can you elaborate on why you think its awful? Is it just that you hate all RTwP games? (which is a valid opinion) or is it something specific about DAO?

I liked the gameplay for the most part. I like that you can basically program your companions by setting up "if" statements (e.g "If Hp >30%, drink health potion") to avoid a lot of micromanaging. My main complaint with the gameplay is that its extremely unbalanced and mages completely shit over everything else while other classes like archer rogues and two-handed warriors are so weak and useless its a meme. As for the rest (dagger rogues and shield warriors) they are fine but still very weak compared to mages. But at least the mage gameplay is one of the most fun of any RPG ive tried. Its truly a mage chad game.

Skills and progression are generally boring, there’s essentially no combat variety, there are too many fights, the controls are just awful, items are so fucking boring, and most of the time you just sit there and wait for your party to kill the enemies. Like I said Pathfinder has much better gameplay in comparison and that game gets fairly trashed for its terrible gameplay. DAO really makes me miss swarms and grease

They are both designed with rtwp combat in mind, and Kingmaker originally only had rtwp combat available. At their base level, both games are essentially just about either stacking modifiers and auto-attacking, or stacking modifiers and dropping a big spell that instantly wins you every encounter.

It's not that good. It's shallow, stiff, story is regular "ancient evil awakens and you are the hero", dialogue is marvel tier. 1 memorable character because of porn, 1 because of "enchantment" meme (don'teven remeber his name). The worst part is that locations are huge and empty, like most bioware games. The bar for games was much lower when it released, believe it or not.

Ok as a student with literally nothing better to do, but I wouldn't have played it as an emplyed person.

DPS fighter uses two daggers, the tank can use either two-hander or sword and board. The point is that they play quite differently as the tank uses more active abilities.

No it doesn't, all it achieves is making a game that's already too long even longer and slower.
>>750265345
Not really, Pathfinder just has melee auto-attacker, ranged auto-attacker, blaster wizard or DC wizard.

Sort of, you could just run a bunch of melee wizards or dps fighters and probably be fine given how they'd all be rather robust.
>>

That’s every BioWare game ever. The only time they deviated from this even slightly was Mass Effect 2.
>>
>>750265614
>Pathfinder just has melee auto-attacker, ranged auto-attacker
You have no idea what you're talking about, do you? Melee and ranged classes are basically the same with a couple of exceptions. There are also classes that don't fit into your categorization at all like the Kineticist which has more variety than the entire progression system in DAO.
>>
>>750265689
Because nobody actually likes playing the game anon, it's boring slogging rigmarole. People tolerated the gameplay so they could fuck the swamp witch and the french tart
>>
>>750265660
What difficult encounters? The game is essentially just a knowledge check and if you know how to stack modifiers properly every encounter is a cakewalk. The intro section of WOTR is an exception of course, but that one is also not made easier in the slightest by turn-based since it's all about manipulating the NPC with you to finish every encounter.

“THAT parts” in most games are usually parts where the devs introduce some gimmick to mix up the gameplay and people aren’t used to it. Yet if you make a game that has no gimmick sections at all, people will call the game repetitive.

You can’t win as a game dev either way.

More people will buy a game that can be modded to hell and back. DA:O also doesn't get constant pieces of viral media comparing it to its predecessor driving more sales after its debut era. New Vegas legitimately keeps getting called the better role playing game compared to FO3 so if you missed it you should play it. Also it was on sale for a dollar recently.

Perhaps banning steam charts would diminish disenguous trolling where people pretend not to have a single ounce of critical thinking.
>>
>>750266023
>There is like maybe one encounter in the base game that requires this.
No, it's useful throughout the entire game. An example of this the level 1 spell Grease, it can win fights throughout the game but you gotta get the positioning right so your guys don't fall down. TB mode helps a lot with this.
>>
>>750266128
Yes, using your DC spells is good when you're playing a DC caster, that is not the same as being required in order to win the game.
>>
>>750261701
You just had to be there. It was the last CRPG released by a major studio during an era when everyone started developing games for mainly consoles. Why do you think they call kickstarter CRPGs fad the "CRPG revival" era?
>>
>>750261701
There is plenty to like, like how each option has different origins. That´s pretty rad and it´s what made people believe in all those promises of the players being able to shape their own worlds. It was an ambitious goal, one on which they ultimately failed to deliver. By Inquisition they had made a habit of promising impossible things on which they couldn´t possible deliver and well... we all know that by the end they had betrayed everything the original game stood for.

Other than that, the original has great characters and atmosphere. As for the world and lore itself you have to understand that, at the time, the genre was believed dead and buried. The promise was that it wasn´t so they delivered a classic experience with some added political experience, which again, at the time was not nearly as played out as it came to be in later years. They milked the trope so much that these days people barely care about the court drama and wants to focus the whole time on pure adventure.
>>
>>750261701

To be honest with you it was given higher praise then deserved because it was seen as a 'return to form' for CRPG fans. The story, setting, and how magic was handled was interesting and well fleshed out. The game was the first piece in what should have been a great setting. The combat and dungeon design, on the other hand, were a massive slog. I also found that most of the martial classes to be bland, primarily because they were allergic to giving them more active use abilities that felt meaningful in combat.
>>
>>750266089
Also helps that New Vegas is 1000x a better game than Dragon Age and has a ton of actual RPG content beyond lockpicking the occasional door or having a persuade/intimidate check.

They are, but people fundamentally lack any sort of critical thought towards why those numbers are the way they are, for example: anything to do with single player games having low current/24 hr peak counts.
For multiplayer games and freshly released SP games it's easy, but anything outside of that tends to expose the majority of retard posters that don't understand anything other than "number low/high."

Games like Undertale have sold tens of millions and yet have very weak steamcharts in comparison to games like BG3, Witcher or Cyberpunk.
Steamcharts in general only became a tried and true method once steam's popularity went through the roof around covid, and it's best used as a popularity test for newly released games.
Witcher 3 has very good replayability and each playthrough lasts a significant amount of time so it'll always end up with good numbers, same with BG3.
You can compare it to something like E33 which also sold tens of millions but doesn't have as much replayability
>>
>>750266604
Again, not an argument. Not sure why it's so difficult for you to accept that Owlcat's PF games are quite similar to DA games and only carry a superficial layer of complexity. After all, they are both very clearly building on the BG games.

The only thing that bothered me, to no ones surprise is THE FADE, and the fact that higher difficulties were a micro managing nightmare because orders/actions that you can que up for your party members would often break and they would just end up standing there doing nothing in the middle of a fight.

I've always found it to be mediocre. The gameplay is excellent. RTWP is the perfect iteration on turnbased combat. and you can freely control your entire team.

>>

Nigger, DAO does have Swarms and Grease. And you can ignite the grease to make a grease fire combo with several different aoe fire affects. (including existing torches in the enviornment)
You do just suck.
>>
>>750269674
I can't even finish BG3 because the entire cast does not deserve to be helped. The NPCs are even worse.
>>
>>750269674
And another thing. Baldur's Gate is inherently cringe because it is based on DnD. aka the amalgamation of every single idea a group of theatre kids threw out, no filter, no idea rejected. There are like 5 different pantheons, aliens, vampires, small floating elephant things. Nothing in the world is coherent or connected together. But they all coexist anyway just so that your special roleplay idea isn't rejected.
Dragon Age blows BG out of the water simply by being one cohesive world.
>>
>>750273543
?????
Where the fuck is it? I've played the game twice (never finished it) but I was close to doing so.
>>
>>750274680
There and there.
You can use grease traps and fire grenades too for a non-spell user to get that effect.
You should've finished it. It has an epic ending, but you might not get it if you didn't like the story. Oh, you don't like the fighting either, nevermind. There is a war at the end.
>>
>>750261701
I love Pathfinder games but FUCK NO they dont have better gameplay than DAO. Both spell/combat combos and combat encounters is miles better in Origins.
>>
>>750275421
Okay, I was wrong about grease
And by swarms I meant enemies that are immune to a certain type of damage. In particular, I was referring to Kingmaker where in one of the first side quests you face swarms enemies that are completely immune to any weapon and require aoe damage. Later on there were trolls that required acid damage, as well as a few other types of enemies that required cold-iron weapons. Larian DOS also had similar elements in some places.
In DOA though I honestly don't remember a single enemy that ever forced me to change my tactics or damage type.
>>750276273
Really? I find the spells and skills to be very boring and basic, and 90% of encounters are literally just fights in empty hallways. Even Pathfinder had more going for it, with all those fairies in Kingmaker and demons in Wotr, especially Wotr on high difficulty, which lets enemies use every spell they know.
>>
>>750263428
Skill issue, and you definitively played it on game journalist mode.
In hard mode there is friendly fire so is necessary to pause, think and give orders, otherwise they kill each other with AOE damage. That gives it the charm of turn based games.
>>
Playing this now (GOG) version, is the fixpack recommended? How about a respec mod?

Does the GOG version not come with the 4GB patch?

Accurately summed up. The gameplay is shit, too.
I also remember that the main (?) female character was un unlikeable cunt (Morrigan or something?) and proto-simp fawned on /v/.

being "highly rated" just means that it's shit that retarded nigger tettiary casuals like because it placates their dislike of actually playing videogames and gives them a nigger minstrel show spectacle so that they don't have to use their fucking smooth simian peabrains

Like BG3, aimed as 'a deep RPG' for normies on consoles
Of cousre it's shit just like BG3 is and just as unfinished but still popular with retards

That's all retarded but the real issue is you trying to badmouth Morrigan. She's the best romance in any game.

Naw it's not bad, just generic. Just like the story and characters. It was excruciatingly mediocre in every respect. People overuse the word soulless, but this is the best example. Just a generic paint-by-numbers bioware rpg experience with nothing interesting of note

Part of the problem. It's gay.

It's straight actually. No wonder you don't like it, you reject basic reality.
