How would you create a First Person real time RPG that doesn't just feel like an fps with light RPG elements but also doesn't feel like stupid bullshit like morrowind?Stupid bullshit includes: Ridiculous weapon sway, inability to wield simple but higher damage weapons.
>>750266341Make quests that don't just focus on killing people.
I wouldn't want to create a game that feels like shit, so I can't answer that. Modern FPS games have done away with tying your weapons to game progress except for maybe Stalker, though.
>>750266341>How would you create a First Person real time RPG that doesn't just feel like an fps with light RPG elements but also doesn't feel like stupid bullshit like morrowind?I'll fuck your mom in the ass and after that i'll shit in your fathers mouth.
>>750266341it would need a robust dialogue system and deep character customization so that you can actually feel the RP in RPG. lots of different quests that arent just "point gun and shoot", which would mean leaning into the dialogue system. you'd also need multiple viable and distinct playstyles
You can't because action games aren't RPGs.
>>750266341>Stupid bullshit includes: Ridiculous weapon sway, inability to wield simple but higher damage weapons.RPG gameplay simulates skills via stats. You simply cannot remove stat based gameplay with real-time dexterity and expect the game to remain a pure RPG. You either bite the bullet and accept your FPS will act like an RPG, or you come to terms with it simply being an FPS with light RPG elements.
>>750266341You cram as much immersive sim in there as you can. Crafting a highly interactive world with tons of player agency. Alongside what other anons said about quests and dialogue.
>>750266341level-based stat growth doesn't belong in games with any skill-based real time gameplayif you disagree with this you're a fucking retard, like a todd howard or hidetaka miyazaki tier retardnow ofc this is a 80iq board, filled with perpetually malnourished smoothbrains, but if you find yourself disagreeing with me just take a moment to consider if you're a moron
>>750266341Noita style gun crafting where more advanced components are unlocked with a skill tree or a quest.
>>750266341I think Morrowind is the closest thing to a real time first person CRPG that's actually good
>>750266495It should still mostly be about killing stuff. That's what RPGs have always been
>>750266649amazing izzat gains saar
>>750266341But I would create an FPS with light RPG elements
>>750266341i would not bother making an RPG at that point, but you can look to something like later might and magic which lets you switch between real time and turn basedjust keep action games and RPGs separate
I've always wanted to see a version of the first person fallouts where it's basically just turn based first person and the targetting being all done in VATS.I'm not sure if it would be a fun game but I like turn based tactics so... maybe?
>>750266341The perspective isn't the issue. You can make a first person turn based rpg no problem. If you want it real time you have to limit the rpg crap to make it work.
>>750268276This
>>750268043> If you disagree with me you are stupid. At least you realized you would lose any argument and entered cope mode instantly.Smart move.
>>750266341The "shooter" part doesn't scale with stats, killing people is the easiest solution with the shittiest outcomes. Put the player in situations where simply starting a firefight is overwhelmingly likely to be fatal to the player.
>>750269749> Put the player into scenarios they are designed to lose. That probably sounded better in your head.
>>750268276wrong. Gothic is better
>>750269937>there should absolutely be NO other solution to ANYTHING besides starting a firefightI bet you thought you sounded smart
>>750266341>but also doesn't feel like stupid bullshit like morrowind? This is a skill issue on your part. I'll try to explain why Morrowind's hit chance works using the two sequels:you are low-level, fresh off the boat and have little skill in combat>oblivion/skyrim: all the enemies around you have the same dogshit gear you do and while you might die quickly, they die even faster; your skill with your weapon is no different than that of a bandit chief and you will slaughter him with no issue>morrowind: you have a really hard time landing hits on skilled opponents, who are also better-equipped than you are; fights last a long time as you try over and over to hit your opponent, eventually landing a killing blow after suffering much damage yourselfyou are high-level, an experienced veteran who has slain hundreds if not thousands>oblivion/skyrim: the bandit chief is now wearing the same ebony armor as you and has an HP bar going off the screen; despite the increased quality of your weapons, fights take forever as you slowly whittle down your strangely well-equipped enemies>morrowind: with better gear and much higher skill, you land almost all of your hits and fights with lesser opponents end quickly; where before you had no chance of victory, the higher level enemies are taken down quickly via the gear and skill you've acquired through time and effortYou may think "oh, but this is just due to level scaling", but it isn't. Your character can only progress in his quality as a fighter via hit chance because anything else would be player skill, which does not change across playthroughs. An even better example is the lockpicking minigame. In Morrowind, it was entirely based upon character skill. In Oblivion/Skyrim, your level 1 character will have no problem opening master locks if you're not retarded. Fallout 4 tried to fix this but like most things, it made it worse in the process.
>>750270019Gothic isn't first person
i've always find it weird that people will make FPS RPGs but not 2d platformers
>>750268276nah
>>750266341>How would you create a First Person real time RPG that doesn't just feel like an fps with light RPG elementsWell for starters I would keep in all the """stupid bullshit""" because otherwise you would just be making an FPS with light RPG elements you stupid shit.
>>750266869>>750266495>>750266341game devs and gamers alike both tend to forget that ROLEPLAYING GAME means you have the opportunity to ROLEPLAY a unique chosen character IN-GAMEone camp views roleplaying as dicerolls, rock-paper-scissors spreadsheets, and number-go-upthe other camp views roleplaying as picking all the goody-two-shoes options, picking all the evil options, picking all the sarcastic reddit lol so random xd quip options, or being a complete retarded goldfish who picks all the "Tell me about X" options in dialoguebut none of these actually matter, they're just excuses to kill things and get the most gold to buy more guns and armor to kill things with bettergames with actual ROLEPLAYING, where your actions actually have major consequences on your character and/or the world (not necessarily both) are exceptionally rare, almost to the point of nonexistence
You make it an immersive sim like Prey (2017) where you actually do have to solve shit rather than just blast your way out of anything. The level designers take precedent over the RPG elements.
>>750266341STALKER Anomaly/Gamma is a pretty good example:>Create a living world>Survival mechanics>Crafting and repair mechanics make sense>Actually smart AI>Good shooting>Anomaly huntingJust follow the basic Quake formula for shooting and movement, create a semi-believable world, and add in stuff that revolves around said world unrelated to shooting. Many third person RPGs could work easily in first person like RDR 1 and 2. If you really want a heavy focus on RPG elements just copy System Shock 2 with the stat points system.
>>750270797The Morrowind way only works at low levels, because once you start consistently hitting your opponents, it becomes exactly like Oblivion/Skyrim. Also hit chance is incredibly stupid when you're character can't a fucking worm with a dagger.
copy what this game did
>>750272009But the shooting sucks ass unless you equip the laser for your pistol on Liberty Island.
I've gotten used to Morrowind's combat. I wouldn't necessarily call it good though. I played both a mage and a axe warrior in two separate playthroughs and honesty it takes way too long for mage gameplay to actually get fun and even then the game can just fuck you through RNG. You also have to be able to remember the inherent resistances of most things otherwise your spells are dogshit.Playing as a button mashing melee warrior was just kind of boring after a while. It wasn't too bad but in essence it boils down to what you'd be doing in Skyrim's melee combat.
>>750272575getting used to shit doesn't make it not shit
>>750272575Alot of these FPS-RPGs actually would benefit in trying to emulate the economy of ability action that is seen in more traditional ARPGs like Diablo or PoE where builds are still strategic and varied while maintain a sense of real-time momentum.
>>750266341I already did do that by modding Morrowind. >No fatigue run (like every NPC in the game besides the player already hasWhich allows you to add in>Dash which costs stamina (added for both you and enemy NPCs)>Active blocking for you and enemies>Parry system for you and enemies >Faster attack speed for you and enemies (I like it to be about two attacks a second)And about a dozen other minor tweaks and fixes for just about every system in the game. Morrowind is kinda mediocre in terms of gameplay. Modded Morrowind is one of the greatest RPGs of all time.
>>750278189so you just turned it into light arpg fromslop, how great.
>>750266341Well, in a realistic setting, money decides everything so the "simple but higher damage" weapons would cost a lot of money and you'd have to use your rpg skills to acquire that instead of having to do pseudo dungeon delving to kill a boss to get it. Unfortunately money focused games don't get made because it's seen as incompatible with basic morality. If you have fantasy/scifi elements however then you can just put a made up reason for why you can't wield the better weapons like tech pistols requiring you to do advanced math on the fly or magic shit requiring magic skills or more mana. There is the option to make it no-gameplay, dialogue heavy tranny shit, like that communist game or tabletop copycats. Or you can just make it porn like bg3.But in either case here, it's not really an RPG anymore. At least not in the classic video game RPG meaning of the word which is meant to be a simulation and dice rolls / dialogue options are just mechanics for that.
>>750266341>First Person real time RPG that doesn't just feel like an fps with light RPG elementsNigga we have like a billion real time blobbers, like Magic & Magic.
>>750278945>Any rpg with basic combat mechanics is a souls-likeShush child. It's literally identical in every way but with more mechanics which make the game MUCH harder (which isn't saying much because Morrowind is very easy)
>>750279094>hikaru no go>on /v/my nigger
>>750266341you cantyou ditch stats and levels entirely and make character progression metroidvania esque
>>750266341>shoot enemy in the head with a sawn-off shotgun >doesn't die RPG and FPS is such a terrible combination
>>750266341Simple, the RPG aspect only applies to the story. There's no good reason to apply RPG aspects to gameplay in an action game that's only about a singular combat style
>>750271865Yeah, except STALKER is not an RPG in any way shape or form and you'd have to be seriously retarded to think it isAt most you get the entirely meaningless and soon forgotten choice of which faction to join, and that's the extent of any "RPG" shit in STALKER
>>750266341Yahtezze already addressed this, you can't, you either piss of the rpg guys with watered down "do everything" dudes, or piss off normies cause they can't just run around shooting stuff and watch it fall down.
