That's just modern Capcom, they refuse to add any challenge to the first playthrough for some reason.In that sense Onimusha is actually substantially harder than most of their modern output, due to the boss fights. Nothing below Dante Must Die in DMC5 is as challenging as the final boss in Way of the Sword.It's dumb but it's just how they make their games.

I remember being heavily disappointed by the first game as I beat it in around 3 hours without much difficulty, and without rushing things. It was never a hardcore series if you just wanna beat the game. That said, it was also more about movement than this game, and I vaguely remember that it would rank your performance in an arcadey way like DMC, so in that sense it's kinda sad that they changed things
