Systems with a short life.
Which did you happen to own? Were you satisfied with their brief spark?

My best friend had a CDI when it was released and something like 3 games.
He never became interested in video games. Good for him, he now has 2 kids and me zero.

had n-gage. didn't really even use it for games. was perhaps better than normal phone of it's time. from novelty standpoint, kinda regret trading it in when changed to newer phone at some point.

Google took a shot at forcing always online streaming. And since it's google, they came with an army of jeets and bots to shill their garbage.
Then they demo'd it. Some assassins creed game. The lag was unbelievably bad, so much so it killed the project on the spot. Google got the memo, lost interest and quietly took it out back one year later.

I somehow ended up with Saints Row III on this. It was fun because you could jump into other peoples' gaming sessions, and whenever they'd get the '(username) is spectating your session' toast they'd inevitably stop whatever it is they were doing, the game would run for a few seconds, then oop, '(other guy) has ended the session' message.

It pains me how technology has now become so expensive it soon will be almost impossible for everyone to make new hardwares. I liked when there was a lot of smaller hardwares instead of just the big ones. This very much lessened in the 2000s and 2010s but this is now impossible.

I prefer it vastly over the switch: Use a box to give you plenty of space for hardware, use a mobile screen to simulate a handheld experience. I get it, you have to have the balls to sacrifice true handheld mobility and nintendo probably felt like they already had their answer in WiiU's sales that it wouldn't have worked, but in a different timeline where they'd done things in reverse where the switch approach was first instead I think it could have hit at just the right time to truly capitalise on the concept while also allowing them not to suffer the 3rd party issues they've had with switch 1/2 where the hardware just can't compete because it has to fit in an already too-heavy handheld. You could have even really pared things down so the screen had as little hardware in it as possible and have a cheap 2nd/3rd/4th screen/controller for all those friendslop games, but hindsight is 20/10 and probably bullshit anyway.

I like hand-crank tech in general but the basic efficiency for power generation has been the same since its inception and the power demands have only gone up. If you could find a better way to provide "free" power to a platform it would go intercontinentally ballistic and not just for video games but right now it's basically for low-power novelties like this and emergency radios/torches. Someone feel free to invent a tiny wind farm or solar panel not the size of a house though please.

I think the only nice thing I can say about it is that it's vulnerable to the tegra rcm stack smash so it's basically unbrickable and I can install debian on it. Even then it's weaker than a Pi 4 by now.

Still have it, actually, though its literally been decades since I've turned it on. teleroboxer was fun, as was the wario game, red alarm would have been kino as fuck if you could actually see what the fuck was happening, and my whole family played the fuck out of the pinball game and got really competitive about the high scores. we also had a golf game and the mario brothers title but those were pretty forgettable.

>Metal Gear Solid Mobile, originally released for the Nokia N-Gage 2.0.
Reminder that N-Gage 2.0 =/= N-Gage.
The og N-Gage was a device that was made to run games specifically made for it that could only be played on it, despite sharing the OS with other Nokia phones.
N-Gage 2.0 was a game distribution platform, not a device, and many Nokia phones running on the S60 platform could play games made for it, but most games made for it didnt actually require the N-Gage 2.0 platform itself to be used at all.
Effectively, the N-Gage 2.0 has more similarities with the modern Google PlayStore than it has with the original N-Gage.

It was a subscription service where you paid your monthly subscription so you could buy games at full price and use their servers to stream the game. Often this included input delays, as you'd expect, and in my experience being a tester for a handful of games that were on the service often would have visual degradation while playing and if you were playing in 4K you'd easily burn thru 100GB of download bandwidth in one day as I found out the hard way working from home as a tester with a 1 gigabit connection and a monthly download limit that would then tack on $10 for 10 more gigabytes of download each time you passed your limit because my ISP didn't do unlimited download plans at the time. You'd also run into a lot of random hitching from the streaming side which left devs with nothing they could do to fix it in some cases. They did pay devs a lot of money to make Stadia versions of games though, something like a couple million for anything kind of popular, which all they had to do to make it work was basically make a version that can run on Linux which for some was a half hour job working on binaries so I'm sure some Linuxfags benefited from it at least.
Then when it died all the games you paid full price for died with it, no refunds. The controller they sold for it was passable quality at least, but if I remember right they had to do a last update to make the controllers not just brick after losing connection to the servers or something.
