>Nearly impossible to beat in 1 credit because the game had scripted parts where you always took damage
Were there any other arcade games like this?
>>
>>750284286
>the game cheats you like a real carnival
Sovl
>>
Carnevil is especially egregious about it. There's at least one point in every stage where you take mandatory damage from an enemy who isn't even on screen. I love the vibe, but fuck that shit. Hambone especially is just absurd.

House of the Dead 1 and 2 give you an actual fighting chance.
>>
Yeah, all of them.
>>
>>750284286
Wasn't this game made by a cult or something?
>>
>mandatory damage
It's one of those things that triggers my 'tism.
Unless I'm playing a RPG or an abstract battle sim of some sort, I should be able to beat any enemy formation and boss without getting hit, given enough skill. And just being able to cheese the fight by killing the enemy instantly doesn't count either.
>>
>>750284286
i seriously doubt anybody on /v/ has played an arcade game let alone 1cc'd one. And I have zero idea what other game does this, I just know 90s arcade games were designed to steal quarters away from kids.
>>
Never played the game but I remember ads of it having an evil baby you shoot and it made me uneasy.
It clearly just wasn't me because I think it ended up getting censored.

I have never heard of this game before even though it came out in 1996
a few days ago i look up 3d models for a cyclops and there it was

and now there is a thread about it
this is the first time i have ever seen it on /v/

what's the meaning of this?
>>
>>750285735
I did both of those things.
1cc being impossible is rare enough, and a mark of shit design. Japanese devs especially playtested their games to guarantee it. Yes, even the bullshit difficult ones.
>>
>>750285938
From what I recall the machines could be configured to use either the baby or a teddy bear.
>>
>>750286051
Yeah, theres a switch for arcade owners to use if they want
>>
That one Jurassic Park lightgun game can't even get a no damage run with a TAS

Well there was a House of the Dead game with a giant Sloth boss, where due to the position of the boss, you could not shoot its last weak spot until it has hit you one or more times.

Pic related.
>>
I swear every American lightgun game cheated you
>>
>>750286051
>can decide whether to censor your "copy" of the game or not
Way ahead of its times. Why isn't that a thing today?
Oh right, because it's not about entertainment anymore, it's about politics.
>>
>a game where the badguys name is literally TOKENTAKER is a game that takes tokens
>>
>>750284286
only ever saw this game once at circus circus adventure dome back in the 90's. Cant really remember if me and my cousin got to play it but light gun games were big back then and I think it costed like $1 a credit back then and my parents would rather me play something 25cents or under. was super weird too cause I have vague memories of being in a weird carnival like setting and even having to sit down in a 90's VR simulator to play it
>>
>>750284286
The Gauntlet games were super blatant about wanting your quarters, you health constantly ticked down over time
>it's right there in the title
Yeah but still
>>
>>750284286
Dark Escape 4D or whatever it's called had some serious bullshit moments where you have like less than half a second to react to a random enemy attacking you when the camera is turning to face them. If you know in advance I guess it's possible though
>>
>>750285735
I have 1CC'd Time Crisis 2 in a real arcade.

>>
>>750285735
Got a simpsons 1cc with the japan version.
>>
>>750286564
Was it still beatable if you were good enough and got all the health drops? Every shmup I've played seems like impossible bullshit but there's dozens of autists 1CCing them so I assume it's the same thing.
>>
>>750284286
Was anyone else just never able to get the one heart that's in the sky after you fall into the grave at the end of the haunted house? I've played it dozens of times on MAME and I've never been able to get it, maybe it's easier to do on an actual machine
>>
>>750284286
Fuck Hambone and his machine gun.
>>750286051
Yep yep, only 1 arcade I went to had the baby as a boss, everywhere else they changed it to the giant teddy bear.

Maybe Area 51 but i dunno if it had mandatory damage sections.
That said light gun games are an underrated genre that could have been improved on but never did.

The restriction was always being on rails and tech never compensated well enough for allowing movement control, plus it kinda becomes a new genre once you have full movement control.
But I always thought wii like system and rpgs that work in light gun mechanics, or evolutions in light gun mechanics like dodge and defense or multiple paths could have pushed things forward, or adventure games with lightgun mechanics....

It also was weird because despite being easily emulatable with a mouse, the ease of use actually worstens the experience and is difficult to emulate... Which is weird.
>>
Generally when it comes to light gun games there are two types of gameplay design. Ones with life points are often more fair or promote skill. The punishment for taking damage is more severe, but the player is often given a longer window to avoid said attack.

The other type is games with life bars. These games often throw many hazards at you consecutively. A normal player is not expected to avoid everything but the damage you take from each hit is minimal...though it does eventually add up and you're forced to enter another quarter.

Carnevil is the latter, and Midway's game design was always catered more towards quarter feeding than allowing skill to get a player through the game unscathed. Simply take a look at their previous gun games or other arcade titles such as mortal kombat with obnoxious input reading or gauntlet with life draining away by the second.

>>750287268
only ones off the top of my head I can think of seeing 24/7 were time crisis, house of the dead, area 51, Halo fireteam raven, silent hill the arcade and jurassic park

Or Terminator. Theres always a Terminator.

I forgot the name of it but it was lightgun game where the lightguns were shotguns and the arcade cabinet was 3 players(I think, maybe more)

That game was impossible to beat.
>>
>>750285998
The meaning, o wretched frogposter, is that now that you've been made aware of the game, you have noticed one of the semi frequent threads about it.
>>
>Game is called House of the Dead

hotd is a very easy game until Magician and his BS
>>
>>750284286
I remember seeing this in the arcade and hindsight says I'm glad I didn't waste tokens on it. On a related note for an arcade story, I remember playing House of the Dead 3 with some random guy in co-op and my mom dragging me away right when we were fighting the final boss. Cool guy, he kept giving me free tokens whenever I died to keep playing.

Point Blank was the true king of light gun games. Bonus points if the guns had the simulated ejector on the guns. Those things had the most satisfying feel and clack sound.

fuck boomers, i'm the cool unc B)
i'd yoink quarters from my mom's bowling league teammates to sit my ass in the massive vibrating surround sound San Fransisco Rush 2049 and got so good at the game eventually i could easily 1cc cause if i remember right you could bank free races if you placed first often so i'd farm the loop de loop track cause the ai sucked on that map

that and area51 cause once you know the patterns and when to grenade or chain powerups its ezpz 1cc bby

I've played every HOTD except Scarlet Dawn 100s of times, you can definitely beat Fool without damage. You can damage his weakspot through the stairs if you're implying the stairs protect him from damage. When Fool begins an string of (three) attacks where he strafes around the cage to hit you, those three attack gauges are him covering the same amount of distance. So let's say it would take him 10 seconds to reach and damage you. If you took 5 seconds to deplete the first attack gauge and 4 seconds to deplete the second attack gauge, you will have 1 second to deplete his third and final attack gauge for that run. This creates the illusion that you must receive damage to the uninitiated, but the reason you didn't have enough time to deplete his third attack gauge is because you weren't efficient enough on the first two.

>>750286289
I remember watching two dudes play this at a giant arcade place in my city. I was probably 10 at the time and thought itnwas fascinating. They were fighting that boss and would take turns putting in quarters to keep them alive. I never saw a cool horror game like that before. It was probably what led me into liking horror games eventually.

I've never been able to play things like Soul Calibur or Tekken, for example
>>
>>750296305
At least you can resort to the console ports for those. Some of these arcade games unironically need decomps
>>
>>750287436
Speaking of Terminator, the bullshit in the Salvation light gun game was that the longer you go without taking damage, the more damage the next attack that inevitably hits you will do. It's even possible to get one shot from full health by a boss in this manner, and you know bosses won't play fair.

>>
>>750286991
The health ticking down thing and difficulty gets amplified the further you go so the general idea if you wanted to progress was to clear one world per coin provided you were good
provided your character had max gold+high level you could buy/abuse gold invulnerabilities but never done such "full" run
