How did they do reflections without Raytracing?

This is the entire reason she made the thread.

Mirror the room vertically and make the floor slightly transparent.

who tf polishing those floors between fights

screen space reflection.
the reflective surface (floor) has a normal, in this case showing straight up (0,1,0). to each point of the floor, the camerahits with a certain angle. The whole image you see also exists as depth map, where every pixel distance to the camera is coded in grayscale (its "z" value in camera space). now you just need to construct from every point on the floor a vector with the mirrored angle from the camera point and step into this direction until the "z" component of this vector falls behind a pixels depth "z" and then you know you hit the right pixel. now sample its color and add it to the floor pixel color.

Its computational cheap because you have all the values of what you see anyways. It cant reflect things off screen tho. There are global illumination techniques like screen space ray tracing too. Always where. With less good outcome for obv reasons, since ambient light sources are often behind or next to the player.

TLDR: Its path tracing on only what you see. That exists since more than 20y.

The tops of the windows are in the reflection, but not in screenspace.
Honestly it's probably just rendering an inverted copy of the room like Mario 64

Look at the little rings around the egg shaped railings, you can see the lighting isn't reflected right. Its doing the inverted copy thing 100%.

MSAA.
Deferred shading was a mistake.

I don't know if there weren't reflection before Raytracing, it would be weird to me.

If truly there weren't any reflection, then my guess is that it's a specular world: a copy of the world placed in order to mirror the original, and that floor is a window to it.
