How did Valve strike gold with the Steam Deck, then fuck up so hard with all of the other hardware? Steam Deck must've been a fluke because holy shit Valve hardware is shit
>>
>>750292609
There's nothing wrong with the Steam Machine, beside the price, but that's saying nothing since the deck is also WAY too expensive now. I don't really know about the frame.
Also early Steam Decks have serious technical shortcomings, which were fixed in the OLED model.
>>
>>750292609
Hey the controller is good too (if you managed to get one lol)
>>
>>750292609
deck, controller, and machine are all fine. i had to do a battery replacement for the deck but it was a pretty easy repair honestly

index was ok
>>
>>750292609
>How did Valve strike gold with the Steam Deck
Steam Deck fucking sucks though. I had to RMA it within a month or two and I still have issues with it everytime I use it when I'm traveling.
>power button stops working in desktop mode
>keyboard UI always bugged
The controllers are good though.
>>
>>750292609
>How did Valve strike gold with the Steam Deck
they did not, it was ewaste even at the time
it just benefited from being the first PC switch clone and being there before the chinkheld flood
>>
>>750294332
it being attached to a steam controller makes it better than most of those tho especially since it benefits from steam's controller emulation shit

like half of the appeal of the deck is that you can rebind shit to make it comfortably play anything
>>
>>750294734
You can do the same on any chinkheld tho.
>>
>>750292609
>strike gold with the Steam Deck
They basically sold the only "branded" chink PC handled for less than 400$.
With new prices the steam deck dead on the water, just like the steam machine, that sold only to drones, scalpers, and people who are now trying to sell that piece of junk on craiglist and ebay.
Valve "works" only because Steam is still the "best" service to play games with a PC (and soon on Android).
>>
>>750295401
Funny because I still use my steam deck all the time
>>
>>750295441
Go eat a burger Gaben
>>
>>750292356
>steam controller dead on arrival
>steam machine dead on arrival
>steam frame dead on arrival
Is it safe to say that the steam deck was a fluke? Even the steam deck 2 looks to be only a moderate upgrade and is probably going to be overpriced too
>>
>>750295441
>Funny because I still use my steam deck all the time
Did I say they don't work?
I said the only real good thing was the aggressive price point. Now is on par with other chink PC handled devices, so nobody is gonna buy it.
Novelty shit gets massive ONLY when the entry price is LOW
>Muh switch 2
Compared to Switch 1 it sold like ass
>>
>>750293491
There‘s a lot of things wrong with launching a pc (that you can’t upgrade) with worse specs than a ps5. 8gb vram lmao
>>
>>750295538
The steam deck (LCD) was sold at a loss. They recoup thin margins with the OLED version.
>>
>>750295706
When the steam deck launched the only competitor i remember was the first gpd win and that was like 700€ while being weaker and having worse software due to winblows. Even if they didn‘t sell it at a loss it would have been great hardware. Can‘t say the same for the steam machine
>>
>>750292609
Steam deck sold like 3% of the switch's sales. The only thing I will give valve credit for is kickstarting the pc handheld space. I love my xax.
>>
>>750292356
Did this guy try speaking to support at all or was his first reaction to just publicly whine

dpad is shit

it doesnt sit well in the hand

how small are your hands?
>>

>>Muh switch 2
>Compared to Switch 1 it sold like ass
compared to the switch 1 it's been out in the market for a year and half
>>
>>750296148
its not the size, the shape is the problem
>>
>>750296092
>face buttons are cheap membrane
Still better than microswitches. THOSE are the absolute bottom barrel in terms of actual feel.
>>
>>750295785
>and having worse software due to winblows.
troonix is unusable dogshit still, to the point linux usage % on steam keeps dropping
>>
>>750292356
>after facing almost every issue

Sounds like the owner was a retard. Probably broke it in his attempts to fix whatever """issues""" he was having.
>>
>>750296338
Except that it's actually going up, it just keeps fluctuating on the steam survey because of chinks causing sampling errors.
>>
i've been on the reservation queue since launch and now I don't even want to buy it anymore. I was eager to buy it at launch, but now it feels like a huge waste of money. I think I'm just going to wait for the next generation of VR.
>>
>>750296503
Except the english usage is also going down, not up.

>>How did Valve strike gold with the Steam Deck, then fuck up so hard with all of the other hardware?
All the other hardware slammed straight into AI. If they had released it all around they same time as the Deck, they would have been golden.
>>
>>750296538
your body will be too fucked by the next VR gen comes around
>>
>>750294332
The deck is by far the best video game device I've ever owned and I've had 30 years worth of consoles and a beefy as fuck desktop. It's the system that made me swear off consoles forever.
>>
>>750295352
No, I can't. Chinkhelds are fucking nightmares on docking and connectivity because they're fucking Android at best, gimped to shit ARM Linux at worst. So many issues for no fucking reason.
>>
>>750298908
Valve was gonna release the steam machine this or last year anyway and even without the AI bullshit it would have been bad value compared to building a pc yourself. I don‘t know why people act like only the steam machines parts went up in price while everything else stayed the same. It‘s a shit product either way
>>
>>750295632
The good thing was steamos and proton, not just the price point. Now that steamos and proton is on everything, there's little reason to get a deck specifically, but that was all valve's doing. They win no matter what you buy.
>>
>>750292356
Is this a statistically relevant occurrence, or did you make a thread for one guy with one defective unit of a product?
>>
>>750295794
And if nintendo had sold the switch exclusively from their website with no marketing, it would've sold 3% as much as well. It is not even remotely a comparable situation.
>>
I learned my lesson with the HTC Vive, that piece of shit broke in the first month because the retarded engineers at Valve didn't think it would be a good idea to turn the lighthouses off when the headset is not in use.
>>
>>750298741
Simply don't give it internet access, you aren't playing standalone multiplayer like a child, are you?
>>
>>750299027
Valve was targeting like $700 for both the machine and frame. At that price, it would've swept like the deck and cemented a successful hardware segment. AI massacred those plans.
>>
>>750299369
And $700 was when AI was already having an effect on prices. They probably would've wanted them to be around the original deck's price point.
>>
>>750299369
That is not good value. That‘s twice the price of what the ps5 would‘ve been for basically the same performance. You could spend a few hundred more and build a mid-high end pc that has 32gb ram and a 16gb vram gpu. The steam machine is a joke
>>
>>750292609
The deck was 300 bongs, it is now over double the price and is no longer worth owning. The frame is a 400 dollar piece of hardware being sold for 1k. It was always about price, valve shit is good for a budget priced option and terrible for something premium
>>
>was waiting for ergo kit and prescription inserts to test mine
>Finally got ergo after a week, no inserts though
>Figure I can at least mess with it
>Mine refuses to charge while it's off, probably needs an rma
Fuck now I'll have my inserts and no frame
>>
>>750297324
>the material is somehow super slick
you must have some severely fucked up palm sweatiness cuz the entire surface is made of coarse plastic.
like I have sweaty palms and it's just fine.
>>
>>750299656
That was when AI prices were already hitting and the machine was meant to be a discreet, console-like living room device, not a competitor to a desktop, though you could also use it as a computer, unlike an actual console, which are just locked down and worthless.
>>
>>750299793
I don't even know how ergo kits are always out of stock, barely anyone even has a frame to attach them to.
>>
>>750292609
The steam deck is a pile of garbage, valve fanboys are insufferable. I'd take a chink emulation handheld over it. It's also ridiculously overpriced.
>>
>>750300369
It was good when it launched. The steam machine is garbage though and anyone defending it has to be a fanboy
>>

My only real complaints with the frame so far are the shitty battery life(which is honestly REALLY awful, especially considering it takes like 2 hours to fully charge) and the lack of official controller support in games, which will be fixed eventually. It WORKS everywhere, but lots of games currently map grabbing to holding the fucking grip button down instead of just tracking finger movement like the index and its unbearable, I dont want to hold an awkwardly placed button down continuously for minutes at a time
>>
>>750300369
Steam Deck is fucking godly, it just got fucked by its new price thanks to AI.
>>
>>750300596
The battery life is really poor and surprisingly not comfortable when laying down. I would have liked an offbody battery.
>>
>>750292356
seeing the absolute subhumans who post on the Steam Frame related reddit(s), I guarentee this fucker abused the thing in ways it wasn't ment to be, and is now blaming Valve.
Why did Scalpers AND these subhumans get the chance to purchase the Frame, and not me? My OG Vive + base stations + controllers all still work, and when I had Knuckles controllers (owned them for 1.5 years before reselling) I never ran into any of the issues people had with them, even after punching my walls like 5 times each with them.
>>
>>750301538
>“oh sorry guys we have to double the price due to AI unfortunately.. we‘re definitely not using it as an excuse“
When valve claims the steam deck has to be a thousand dollars due to the “shortage“ retards like you will probably lap it up too
>>
>>750300596
the battery really is atrocious, I'm usually playing with a 25000mAh powerbank connected unless it's a short 30-40 minute session
>>
>>750301794
I literally just said it got fucked by pricing. Not my fault you missed out when you could get one for $300.
>>
>>750292609
the deck was only good for like a year or 2 before better options came out.
>>
>>750301849
can you link me to the one you use? I'm thinking of just making a duct tape rig on the back of the headset, probably not an issue since its so light and comfortable by default.
>>
>>750301901
And i‘m telling you that they‘re pricing it way above what the increase in component costs warrants. It‘s just an excuse to rip off dumbasses that don‘t know any better and believe every word that comes out of their mouth
>>
>>750300596
Honestly, I see the hype for VR after using it. Playing the HL2 VR mod was amazing. But yeah, the battery life sucks and it definitely feels like more of a beta product right now, but maybe that's just me because I can't stream to the damn thing since my desktop isn't on the 7.2 linux kernel. Without streaming, it's ridiculously limited and the hardware is weak as hell, which makes me wonder why they bothered putting any real compute into it, which just made it way more expensive.

The pricepoints of the hardware is one thing, but the fact they aren't even producing enough hardware so that the people who ACTUALLY want one can even get one is ridiculous. It's almost like Valve KNOWS their hardware is dogshit and is afraid to make too many of them. Just shows absolutely zero faith in their own hardware. Says a lot about the people who'll buy their slop regardless honestly.
>>
>>750302025
Valve has absolutely no reason to want to overprice their hardware. Hardware profits would be pennies to them and their whole goal has been to push SteamOS for more software sales. Valve regularly discounted and put the Deck on sale down to the price of a Switch 1, a far less capable device, before AI pricing screwed them.
>>
>>750301978
>UGREEN Nexode Power Bank 25000mAh 145W
It's quite big and heavy for me, 12000mAh would probably be better if you want to strap it on the back
>>
>>750302192
fun fact, you can't get steam controller specs for $100, you need $250 to get that custom controller if its not valve. just proof they are good people.
>>
>>750292356
What do people expect? You are strapping a computer to your face which then spends hours pulling in your sweat fumes that corrode everything within it.
Maybe something simple like the old Oculus or Index got away with it because they were just smartphone screens in a plastic case and minimal electronics, but it's physically impossible for a computer to survive long in those conditions with all the moisture and salt of your sweat soaking into it through fumes.
>>
>>750302192
So you genuinely believe an oled deck costs 800€ to produce? Or that the shitbox that consists of old, rejected, thrown together laptop parts costs more than 1000€ to produce?
>>
>>750302025
The only thing I've seen that Valve has unjustifiably fucked with no real excuse for the price are the frame's accessories. Unless they're selling the frame at a loss and trying to recoup some of it with those, which I doubt, those prices are inexplicably jewish as hell.

>>750302074
>which makes me wonder why they bothered putting any real compute into it, which just made it way more expensive.
They seem incredibly fixated on the steam frame being less of a headset and more like a portable console you can also connect to your pc. I dont really care about portability, I see the vision but i dont see myself ever travelling with it and i dont think its versatility justifies the shit battery life. Theyre even adding official dvd player support to it for some reason so you can plug in a disk drive and balance it on your head or whatever
>>
>>750302308
I genuinely believe AI absolutely fucked component pricing, yes. And considering how aggressively Valve was pricing the Deck before that all hit, as well as their goal with their hardware, I have no reason to doubt it's stupid expensive to produce at this point and they're not nuking their hardware attempts for some measly profit. They talked about this and outright said RAM suppliers had them by the balls.
>>
>>750302443
I see the vision, but definitely too early for it. The hardware isn't powerful enough to make it useful standalone unless you want even a 20 year old game to be low res and aliased. I would have MUCH preferred they put that cost of compute into higher res oled lenses and a better battery.
>>
The worst part about the Steam Frame is that it's not even OLED at that price
>>
>>750302725
Not to mention the practically required "ergonomic kit" being sold separately at a ridiculous $60 pricetag. Without it you can't even make full use of the controllers.
>>
>>750296538
Yeah this is me too. Being put on a permanent waitlist gave me a lot of time to mull it over and I realized if I'm spending $1500 on the frame I might as well just save up another $1000 and get a pimax dream air with OLED instead.
>>
>>750294332
>it just benefited from being the first PC switch clone
razer made one 4 years before the switch even came out dumbass
>>
>>750302443
You would have to check what your USB ports output is. It might have a "fast charger" outlet. You can buy an appropriate power brick and run it with a 25ft cable.
>>750303234
The ergo kit is such a cheap piece of shit. The controller straps are okay, but are a step down quality-wise from the knuckles straps. The headstrap is the cheapest garbage I've ever seen on a VR headset. It connects to the Frame via paperclip for crying out loud.
>>
>>750303234
the ergonomic kit also sold out way before the frames themselves sold out like lmao how the fuck does that happen
>>
>>750303234
Crazy how they didn't just partner with a cheap chink company and sold it for $5 or something. Not like it costs more than $2.50 for some fabric and plastic.
>>
>>750303392
I mostly bought the frame for steamos and valve and the community's support. The deck started rough too, but got godly over time. I do wish valve just held off on the standalone part of it and upped the screen to oled and put in a better battery though.
