What is most baffling about this scene is the mom is being genuinely supportive to her kid and just trying to wrap her mind around its freak ideology. She immediately apologizes if she ever made it feel like a failure of a girl, and even offers that they have a word for it in their native language and perhaps it's that. But the freak just insults her and storms off while the player is given no option to side with the mom or tell the freak to be nicer. It's as if the freaks got so much acceptance they could no longer write convincing enemies and had to resort to villifying the well-meaning people who enabled their delusions in the first place. A fitting metaphor for the end of this era.
