It's the only fromsoft game where the weird nonsensical world-building actually works, since it takes place in a dream world.

The Idea of Lovecraft's Cosmicism is his 1918 essay Time & Space on the horror of scale & dimension. Bloodborne's Gothic architecture is sublime like the "teeming, bubbling, foaming multiplicities" of a Shoggoth. The fear & awe of gargantuan magnitudes & irreducible complexities.

I haven't played Demon's Souls or Sekiro, but I consider Bloodborne to be the best game in the Souls series.
Based on my personal experience with the games:
DS1 is an evolutionary step toward Bloodborne;
DS2 is an evolutionary step toward Elden Ring;
But as for DS3... honestly, I hate that game...

I've never known a game to have so many themes interweaving so absolutely flawlessly.
Bloodborne is Lovecraftian, Gothic, it ties in Victorian themes of surgery and medicine, such as Bloodletting. Yarnham is very obviously based on 1800s London and Edinburgh, the two leading schools of surgical study at the time. Cosmicism, Colonialism, the list goes on and usually when a single work tries to include so many themes it is, usually, at best a shallow glance at them, an apeing. In Bloodborne's case it all just clicks into place perfectly, the themes exist in concert with the world and story and become more than the sum of their parts. It's absolutely remarkable.

The only other game that's even come close in the attempt to cram as many themes in is Disco Elysium, a completely different genre. To have achieved this in an ARPG is insanity.

Easily FROM's best work.

DS3 is literally just a corporate mixtape of the Souls series, like they ported everyone's favourite assets into Bloodborne and called it a day. I don't think I've ever played a game more soulless.

I enjoy ripping overleveled chalices and don't care if it makes things easier

2nd time playing it.

Loved Demon, really like DS1, actually love DS2, fucking HATE DS3.

Playing DS3 while being sour graped over bloodborne made me continuously think that DS3 literally was just left-overs of BB thrown together into some shit mess, and I knew very little of Bloodborne at the time until finally playing it, only knew of the cosmic twist stuff sparingly.

Bloodborne is a rare time a game lives up to its hype, its fucking insane, Fromsoft seriously perfected it, it has a few shit moments but so much of it feels so well thought out. The areas, the pacing, the atmosphere.

Seriously, the pacing is insane, how it goes from monster mash halloween thats grim-dark into what it really is happens so smoothly.

Even just stumbling upon those little blue dudes right before the college is such a whiplash of what the fuck is actually going on.
