What does "overrated" mean? That it is not as good as its reputation suggests? But what is actually being said? I don't think anyone treats the story like great literature, and for what it aims to be, it works. The gameplay? It is richer in side content than other JRPGs, and the gameplay is solid. If instead you mean "Overrated because there are better games that get less attention," you should specify which criterion and why. It is certainly vastly superior narratively to trash like Xenogears (and no, that's not a bait).

Gameplay is actually alright as far as JRPG's go though. Materia was fun. I've never played a game with such aura.The art design, music, characters, etc still hold up to this day and the gameplay, story, and scope were insane for 1997. It's still good fun but it was mind blowing in 1997. It deserves every piece of praise it got.

It always hits just right.
