What's the /v/ consensus on Castlevania Revamped? I played it and it was so good that I feel like it deserves to get talked about more often
>>750295792I really like it
>>750295936Shanoa Sex
>>750295936Yeah if Castlevania had its own equivalent to Sonic Mania, as in, a true classic revival that understands the tone and gameplay of the classic NES era, I'd say this game is the closest thing to it
>>750295792Never heard of it. Shill it to me
>>750296078I wouldn't say that just because it doesn't actually play like a Classicvania but it's still a top tier fangame
>>750296106It's a re-interpretation of CV1 but as a Metroidvania. I'd describe it as short and sweet
>>750296213Oh the music is really fucking good too. I like how many Chronicles songs they used
>>750296106It's a remake of the original Castlevania, but instead of being a linear Classicvania it plays like a Metroidvania, the devs also managed to stay faithful to most of the mechanical simplicity of the early games, you still get upgrades and new movement options, but they're much more simpler to manage and understand than, say, SoTN
>>750296213>but as a MetroidvaniaSay no more, will never touch it.
>The basic idea of Castlevania ReVamped is simple: what if the original Castlevania was a Metroidvania insteadGross. No thank you.
>>750296304Do not interpret it as modern metroidvania. It is closer to the actual Castlevania metroidvania games. If you don't like those either then fair enough
>>750296404This, it's not as bad as it sounds, the devs who made it stayed extremely faithful to the Classic formula, the Metroidvania aspect is implemented in a way that mostly just improves what was already there, but it doesn't introduce any slop mechanics or clutter, the game is very measured in its scope and knows when to stop giving the player upgrades
I love it. I spent ages trying to find something like it for CV2 and CV3, but I guess nothing yet. I found something fairly close for CV2, called Simon's quest revamped, which is okay. Worth a look.
>>750296404I just want classicvania. If I want metroidvania slop I'd play Bloodstained.
>>750296867If you haven't played them then you should played the Bloodstained Curse of the Moon games
>>750296931I got 1.5 hours into cotm2 but got bored. Level design just wasn't as tight as the classics due to being balanced for 5 characters.
>>750297116I just thought the enemy designs and bosses kind of sucked ass compared to COTM 1.
>>750296353>>750296304>metroidvanias are... le bad!Sometimes I genuinely believe niggas on /v/ purposefully try to be as contrarian as possible for pure ragebait
>>750296078>understand tone and gameplay>lacks the tone and gameplay and turns it into a shitmetroidvaniawhat did he meant by this?
>>750297761>lacks the toneI'd like you to explain to me how a game that's a direct retelling of the events of the 1st game, and respects its original visual and musical identity down to the pixel lacking in tone or presentation, exactly>lacks the gameplayNope, the whip and subweapon focused combat stays the exact same as before, there's nothing that replaces or waters those down>turns it into a shitmetroidvaniaNah, this one is good, because it nailed a good compromise between making a functional Metroidvania game while also staying true to the simpler arcade Classic formula, the game never overwhelms you with weapon or item options, just gives you some optional upgrades you can choose from, and new movement options, but they never replace Simon's core kit
>>750295792Bro, I actually beat this earlier this week. I think it had some issues, like the electric whip being borderline pointless and the bosses having poor, if any, tells, but I had fun with it. I think I was playing an un-updated version.
>>750295792Pretty damn good, but not for me.
Well I guess I got another game to play now. So thanks asshole.
>>750297521No i do i understand if someone doesn't like them and prefers classicvanias it's just that people here tend to express their opinions in the most retarded ways possible
>>750295792I liked the game a lot, but the cards were a poor implementation of optional abilities. You just grind out the 3 best ones and then never engage with the system again.
>>750295792Fun little gimmick that didn't overstay its welcome. I enjoyed playing through it but only because it was a fangame, if you catch my drift.
>>750296681https://archive.org/details/@johnnyoak85
>>750299635Oh, thanks! I'll check these out! Where should I start?
>>750295792Decent. Balance wasn't great but at least is short so is not super annoying. Castlevania MX on the other hand is just kind of bad.
>>750295792I've never played it but after reading the thread I'll put it on the list. First I want to play one of the most recent CV2 fan mods but I'm balls deep in Dead Space so that'll be some time.
>>750299059Eh, some rooms in the castle and some boss fights benefit from having different cards equipped, like the meteor dash card is really useful for rooms with lots of trash flying around, but kinda useless for bosses
>>750297521One of those people you replied to, they're not inherently bad but I just feel like taking a classicvania and turning it into a metroidvania is a pointless endeavor. I prefer classicvanias myself but if I want to play a metroidvania I'll play one of the games designed to be one. I wouldn't tell you that making SotN into a classicvania would be cool either, they're two different styles of games that each have their own appeal.
>>750299863And also yeah some upgrades like the electric whip seem to be pointless like >>750298602 pointed out, but that's because I think the point of the electric whip isn't to be a strong all around weapon, but to have the best synergy with the cardiac strike and healing strike cards, since it has the fastest attack speed it lets you farm health/hearts the fastest using these cards
>>750300002>I just feel like taking a classicvania and turning it into a metroidvania is a pointless endeavor.Respectfully disagree, the classicvania games have a certain tone and atmosphere that you can't really find in any of the later entries and Konami certainly hasn't cared about ever replicating again, so it ends up on the hands of fan projects like these to recapture the original tone of the Castlevania games, and yes they might have to switch some shit around to fit their vision, but I think it's an endeavour worth pursuing, and there's a difference between a revival that uses its source material as a blank template you can draw anything on, and a revival that religiously respects the soul of the original thing its recreating, and CV Revamped is clearly the latter
>>750296304Based
>>750299779cv2 is https://archive.org/details/simons-quest-rebitten-1.8cv3 is https://archive.org/details/draculas-curse-1.7
Okay now what the fuck did they mean by this????
>>750302417it even looks like he's wearing a yarmulke
>>750302417Aren't golems actual jew folklore creatures?
>>750302526Yeah, the description is the actual folklore behind them.
>>750297521I like Metroid, but I genuinely just hate all the Castlevanias besides the original. I dunno what it is, but the SotN style gameplay is so boring to me. Meanwhile the original classic Castlevania is a great arcade platformer.
its okay. the controls are just a little too slippery for me. feels like the entire floor is ice blocks
>>750302693yeah you need to be a certain type of gamer to like backtracking. Some people think it's boring and tedious. I think it's comfy as fuck. You get to go back through something you already have memorized, and see how much stronger you are, try out a new weapon or spell, maybe farm a little gold. It's why I also like games with semi-open "hub and spoke" style levels like RE2
>>750302671>but I genuinely just hate all the Castlevanias besides the originalThat's a bit odd. I'd understand preferring the classic style but just the NES Original is a new one. No CV3 or Rondo? Bloodlines, Chronicles, SCIV? I think all of those are good games in their own right (though SCIV is somewhat contentious at times).
>>750303032I'm honestly the same except the opposite, I like the Metroidvania formula because it lets me revisit places whenever I want to and lets me play at my own pace instead of being stuck on a rail, but I also hate the aesthetic and musical direction the series went post-SoTN, it completely abandoned its classic action hero, heavy metal D&D roots and replaced it with that gay feminine looking artstyle where everyone looks like a twink and wears overtly elaborate designer clothing, it doesn't have that classic soul you know? Where you're just a dude who you can tell from a glance is a peak physical specimen, going to kick Dracula in the ass with nothing but rags and a whip on his backpack
>>750303325>it completely abandoned its classic action hero, heavy metal D&D roots and replaced it with that gay feminine looking artstyle where everyone looks like a twink and wears overtly elaborate designer clothingnigger what??????
>>750297761simon's quest was already a prototype for symphony of the night
>>750303508Richter's redesign in that game is fucking gay, because there was literally nothing wrong with his Rondo design, and especially because they were so lazy they didn't even bother updating his sprite sheet despite using that design for the character portraits, though Alucard I'd say he's the exception where the aesthetic works since he's supposed to be aristocratic and not even human in the first place, problem is that Konami looked at the success of SoTN and Alucard's popularity, and then changed every single character's visual languages into that gay twink artstyle trying to chase Alucard 2.0
>>750303828Yeah i like his Rondo design a lot more
>>750304140Yeah, agreed, he carries that old school action hero design language that's much more reminiscent of NES Simon or Trevor, which is perfect, because you know, he is a Belmont, a human, not an immortal shapeshifter
>>750295792I literally never heard of it. What the fuck is this? A rom hack? a fan game? Some random slop?
>>750304675It's a pre-slop fangame. It's pretty good
>>750296304this
