oh yeah, that happened
>>
>>750303591
PC gamers were actually like yes let me double my gpu price for worse performance lmao
>>
>>750303591
yooooooo this shit fiyahhhhhhhh NIGGAAAA TWO CARDS OP!!!! dat means its double the powers !!
>>
>>750303895
>for worse performance
Never change, consolegays.
>>
>>750304117
You don't have to bend over for the sunk cost anymore, multi gpu is dead because it was always shit.

It wasn't a terrible idea until people stopped using CRT monitors regularly (Which was right around the same time SLI became available, but that's beside the point.)

If your output was going to be interlaced anyway, why not have two cards split the even and odd video fields? Once that stopped being the purpose of SLI, it ended up being a nearly pointless gimmick that just existed to get retards to part with their money by giving them a reason to buy more than one top of the line card.
>>

>If your output was going to be interlaced anyway
SLI and Crossfire were not done with interlacing. They could never figure out how to get the cards to operate synchronously and overcome stuttering or how to properly distribute workloads. It was always a disaster.
>>
>>750303591
interconnect still exists
>>
Multi core is the same shit.
>>
>>750303591
You do realize SLI and crossfire was never really meant to be a consumer feature right?
>>
>>750305180
nVidia got SLI (as Scan-Line Interleave) when they bought 3DFX's assets. That was the version that actually worked. If you had two Voodoo2's and set them up in SLI, that's literally all it would do. It would split the video fields between the cards.
There were no timing issues because you had exactly 31.778 microseconds to draw a line no matter what. All the ribbon cable carried was depth buffer information and validation that each line had actually been drawn, so that close and overlapping objects in the middle distance wouldn't flicker or look transparent when they're not supposed to.
It was as simple as a dual-card setup could ever be. And it was made possible by total confidence that the signal being produced would always be 640x480, interlaced, at 60 FPS.
It's absolutely true that it was totally useless as soon as alternate resolutions and uncapped framerates and progressive scan were in the picture, but 3DFX never meant for it to do anything else.
Nvidia just took the name of a cool thing with a good reputation that they inherited from 3DFX and applied it to a technical feature they created for professional-tier graphics cards. Which they slapped into enthusiast grade cards, whether it worked well or not, in the hopes that it would help them sell more to the same consumer base.

Now it's one card for AI and one card for gaming
>>

nta
but he's not wrong. you're also not considering the fact that not every game supports SLI. back in the day I launched a couple with 1070 SLI and found out the hard way it just doesn't work on some games
>>
>>750303591
Imagine if we never left that tech behind. Imagine running two 5090s. Imagine the nuclear housefires.

I fell for that because there was a sale at my local PC shop that sold 2 cards to work with SLI for $100 cheaper than the next gen card that on paper had similar performance, I was poor at the time so it felt like a good deal.
It was great with games that could support it, which was not many, but ran like ass on games that didn't support SLI.
I thought I'd never fall for experimental tech again but a few years ago I bought an Arc A770 which was the same fucking problem!
>>
>>750303591
It never went away. Some modern games still support it or have mods available, and you can enable it on slightly older Nvidia cards.
Not to mention the various other multi-gpu things you can do now, like have a separate card dedicated to Lossless Scaling
>>
>>750305264
>Buy game
>Performance is somewhat shoddy
>Check what is wrong
>Core 0 is being raped while rest is idle

2020+6 and devs still can't fix this shit.
>>
>>750308438
Just one more core bro, just one more virtual core will solve all the bottlenecking bro just one more I promise just build one more low-voltage virtual core bro.
>>
>>750306207
Yes it was, until they realized people would just buy two last-gen or mid-range GPUs and get 1.5x performance and double the VRAM instead of shelling out $5000 for new gen card with 1% better max FPS than old gen card with the same VRAM.
>>
>>750303895
I had dual 8800s for a time, and I spent basically half of what I did today. It made sense for the era when parts were cheap and we weren't in the era of housefire GPUs pulling 650w.
>>
>>750304959
>If your output was going to be interlaced anyway,
Just about nobody was displaying PC games in interlaced mode on CRT monitors during the SLI and crossfire era.
Interlaced PC gaming is extremely rare.
>>
>>750306579
Your mom let you have 2 GPUs?
>>
>>750308574
>You get more performance with 4 cores housefire than Turbo expensive 60 cores whatever

Shit never made sense to me.
>>
I sli'd Voodoo2 cards. One of them rendered the top half of the screen, or as I like to call it, the skybox.

My PC is certainly more important than a dryer.

No, I worked and bought them.

Why cant this work now? Why would it be a bad idea to get two 5070tis, and link them together for 32 gigaburts of wam.
>>
>>750309328
No support for communication between the cards anymore. Best you could manage would be loading a program on one card or the other I think.
>>
>>750309443
>Best you could manage would be loading a program on one card or the other I think.
Supposedly AMD's iGPU CPUs do this, but I had more trouble with it than it was worth so I just disabled it.
>>
>>750308875
Don't worry Anon. I'm old enough to get your reference .
>>
>>750309328
SLI performance peaked with the VooDoo2 (which rendered the top and bottom halfs) and then got worse and worse with every shader gen. I bet a 5090 in SLI now would be like just having one card.
>>
>>750309443
Computer, create a program that links my two 5090s together to double my PC's processing power to play games better.

And Computer, disable safety protocols...
>>
>>750308438
multicore is really hard to do, and sometimes worse for performance.
get an ai to explain it to you like you're five.
>>
>>750306340
and soon it will be one chomebook for streaming from a server
