Why is it so common for a game franchise to only truly peak or explode in popularity with its third entry? Is the third time really the charm? Elder Scrolls, Persona, Fallout, Witcher, Far Cry, GTA, Battlefield...and to a lesser extent Killzone, The Sims, Dynasty Warriors, Driver, Warcraft, Guitar Hero, Fable, and Saints Row. With COD it was both the 3rd and 4th entries that put them on the map. They were practically unknown until the 3rd entry. Either I’m noticing a trend here...or I’m just overthinking it.Feels rather ironic when looking at Valve’s history.
>>750305524The first one establishes itself as "the classic" that will attract nostalgiafags to masturbate over it for all time, 2nd entry is usually the testing ground to see what works and what people actually want from a sequel, third one is usually perfection of the formula or at least the point where it enters the normalfag awareness and gains popularity.
Sounds biased, I bet I can list more 2nd games that made their franchises popular, but I will not do that.
>>750305524>any Killzone>popular???And Fallout 1 & 2 were popular, you're just too young to remember
>>750305641Can you? All Nintendo biggest names exploded in popularity at the third entry. Mario, Zelda and Metroid.
It's a reference to st peter
>>750305735No? Mario was already popular by its first console game, he had at least a few arcade games by that point. Metroid was never popular, as it's basically a western only darling.Zelda I can accept.
>>750305735Not him, but Street Fighter took off with Street Fighter 2.
>>750305735Zelda exploded in popularity with BotW tho
>>750305735Halo 2 Uncharted 2 Monster hunter 2, Street Fighter 2. kingdom hearts 2, half life 2 portal 2 l4d2 max payne 2 mafia 2 kingdom come: deliverance 2, baldurs gate 2 , kotor 2, LBP2
>>750305524Marketing sold those games
>>750305524How fucking young are you? Half the games you mentioned were hugely popular from the start, even if it was in smaller markets. The first Warcraft sold over a million copies, it was MASSIVE by early 90s standards. The first Sims sold 16 million copies, pretty sure it sold MORE than the third game.
