Ok I think I'm about to be done with the game before taking a long break or just stop. I have a lot to say about it.

1. The story. can someone explain what the story is even about? all the audio records are just some random woman yapping about the creation of the world and merging different properties of multiple worlds blah blah blah. but what's the point? what is she trying to say?

2. My favorite type of puzzles: Skipping Stones > Mirror >>>>>> Heroes > Beam. Beam is especially dogshit, especially when it's huge, multi-screen puzzle where I have to collect like 20 gems. fucking hell, man. not fun at all. I prefer small puzzles in general, but the more I play the bigger the puzzle area on average.

3. The length of the game. I feel the game is too long, too much. and I really don't like adding Height into the equation. I really should've stopped after 1st ED, but now I already fell for sunk cost, might as well finish the 2nd ED.

4. Animal Well. I think it forever changed expectation of a puzzle game in puzzling scene. everyone expected a puzzle game to have multiple "layers" , also because of that one big puzzletuber pushing the jargon. These people try to apply "Layer" to this game Layer 1 - Layer 2 (sky) - Layer 3 (underground), but to me that's completely inaccurate. "Layers" in Animal Well refer to the "Depth" of the World. in Animal Well, once you've finished every individual puzzle in the world, the world itself became puzzle (2nd layer), and eventually the real world also became part of the puzzle (3rd layer). The SIZE of the world of Animal Well doesn't change at all, it only became deeper.

meanwhile in this game there's no depth at all. you clear more puzzles, which unlock more areas, which unlock a new world, so you go to that new world to clear more puzzles and unlock more areas... all that simply increases the SIZE of the world. Nothing fundamentally changes in how you approach the puzzle. You're still clearing collection of individual puzzles.
>>
>>750313964
I like the beam levels but there is absolutely no point to ever use the close camera, you have to play with the zoomed out one
>>
>>750313964
Oh I liked the long beam puzzles. It felt like an adventure and thinking outside the box and sequencing.
I generally liked heroes, but bard can eat a dick, druid feels very situational (you'll never guess what his puzzles involved), and the cleric was a little finnicky to get the gap hopping working right sometimes (that's generally what her later puzzles are like). I don't mind the push/pull, loved the wizard.
Mirrors are great. I appreciated stones more after playing with them, but they're not my favorite.

>Length
Agreed. There's lots to enjoy, but it's a lot. Probably good to play an hour or two randomly here and there so you don't get burnt out.

>Animal Well
Have you played Void Stranger?

>>
>>750313964
I guess the game is about puzzle design, i.e., creation of the game itself, who knows? Very autistic and out of touch. There sure are your money's worth of levels, mostly good (before ascension) but the overall package just feels uncreative and unsatisfying.

>Animal Well. I think it forever changed expectation of a puzzle game in puzzling scene.

This game was in development before Animal Well, and the layers concept was in planning well before Animal Well was announced.

The Witness started the tradition of having a second "level" to the game, although there it was more recreational.

>all that simply increases the SIZE of the world. Nothing fundamentally changes in how you approach the puzzle.

The game continuously introduces new ideas and emergent behaviors from its mechanics; almost no two levels involve the same idea, although those ideas spring from common mechanics. If your takeaway from the worlds is that they involve just more puzzles to solve, you're not getting it.

it's a meta-story about the ideation behind the game and the levels. i watched the dev streams for a long time and suspected the order would be a metaphor for the actual game production. it's kind of interesting gleaning insight into its creation through the logs tbdesu

This game is an in-universe sequel to The Witness, this logo appears there as well. Story wise, OotSS is a "simulation chamber" people can get put in in order to learn how to understand the universe and gain an appreciation for how different simple fundamental rules of a universe, when combined, can produce unexpected but delightful results.
This is a direct parallel to how The Witness was also a "simulation chamber" except it was more about discovering the truth of the world.
Very weird premises for games, but it works as meta dev commentary on game design fundamentals so I kinda like it.

Just good puzzle design and polish. The artstyle, sounds and ost just make doing everything in the game comfy

Been curious about this game. I’m familiar with the witness and braid, but I haven’t played Jonathan’s games before. I liked animal well. Given this thread is positive on the game, safe recommendation to buy?
>>
>>750326506
it's nothing like animal well, I would recommend playing the witness instead, it's better and more accessible, and if you love it then come back to this one
>>
>>750326602
I should mention I played big walk and got tired of it by the end because the puzzles kept repeating themselves. Is the witness repetitive in the sense that once you’ve solved one puzzle you’ve essentially solved a large chunk of that kind?
>>
>>750326506
I don't know much about Animal Well, but I think its whole deal is that it's full of secrets. Order of the Sinking Star isn't like that, it's a very straight forward game. But there are large overworld puzzles.

>>750327651
Depends on what exactly you mean. All of the puzzles in The Witness are line puzzles, but with different mechanic being introduced and later combining. Order of the Sinking Star is the same, but with Sokoban, and it's a lot bigger. The Witness maybe hammers things in a bit too much at times, but OotSS keeps itself fresh.
>>
>>750328487
Nice. Would you say you enjoyed animal well, witness, or sinking star more?
>>
>>750328606
Anon,
>I don't know much about Animal Well
But I'd say Order of the Sinking Star. 2 The Witness playthroughs took me just short of 50 hours. Meanwhile, I'm almost 90 hours into OotSS and I've only just reached the last area. Even if they were the same in puzzle quality, OotSS just has more content, so it's proportionally better.

Is this the intended solution? it feels kind of sketchy. actually there are a number of skipping stone levels that feel like this to me, where the timings are a little too tight and I think I've found an alternate solution that is kind of exploity
>>
>>750333025
I think so. And yeah, some of them have uncomfortably tight timings.
>>
>>750333281
the main thing that's throwing me off with that one is that one of the stones is a mirror reflecting one and I never use it in that way
>>
>>750333376
oh as soon as I said that I realized the intended solution. use the normal rocks to slide the mirror directly underneath the lillypad, then push the purple rock into the mirror and reflect it when it's 1 tile past the end point lilypad. this will cause it to slide towards the platform

the one greatest thing about this game is how there's no red herring at all, unlike in Void Stranger. every peculiar aspect of the map design is crucial.
>>
>>750337139

>>
>>750337139
I am loving this game 30 hours in but I would actually prefer if there were more red herrings/unused objects to throw you off here and there. It becomes a little formulaic otherwise, i.e.
>enter a level
>see 3 objects
>fixate on finding a way to use all of them instead of trying out other ideas because the object is here for a reason!!!
meh
>>
>>750337752
You may not like it, but this is what peak game design looks like. Puzzles would feel much cheaper, or like "gotchas", if there were random distraction elements just to throw you off. The optimum is giving you a small set of tools, the purposes of which are difficult to figure out, but satisfying once you do.

Skipping Stones was the first point at which I had to look up a solution, namely: the first puzzle which requires you to time a stone skip to change the course of a lilypad in motion already. I felt less bad when all the video comments were mentioning the exact same fucking thing.
The game doesn't demonstrate that mechanic at any point prior. And to add salt to the wound, the subsequent puzzles also require timing but are also more straightforward in said timing element.

It needs the same level of progression and mechanic introduction as the other areas. 90% of the issues with skipping stones is that it just throws scenarios at you where you need to experiment to find emergent interactions with very little guidance. The heroes section is much better at setting up small puzzles to let you find the mechanic than large puzzles to explore its implications.

There's an audiolog about universes emerging to explore their own rules, or something to this effect. I prefer to think of this as akin to axiomatic universes, rather than commentary on the metaphysics of our own, but it's tempting to go in the latter direction.

>>750371940
I agree with you there. It is interesting to think about it purely in the macro sense where the rules we can see and understand are a ridiculous number of layers away from the rules that make the rules that make the rules etc. so in this commentary and at this scale he is correct, and the universes that emerge to explore their own rules isn't any less valid than some real universe. If that is how things worked.

Here's a conversion/dump of the game's characters in .gltf format, including animations/rigs, courtesy of my good buddy Claude. It took some time for it to crack the shader pipeline to get them looking how they do in-game.

Some notes:
>Gemcuck is called "moonman" internally and has a goatee and moustache. I interpreted him looking like a white haired Leon Kennedy
>You can toggle the Beamcasters accessories/Queen's outfits on/off
>A lot of characters' under sides are without geometry; probably because you would never see them in game.
>Bard has huge boobs
>Queen has a huge ass
>Tif is cute

I've seen multiple solutions for this level. Hint: the stone doesn't have to exit at the bottom and reenter up top. It can be the reverse.

Those aren't leftovers.
After the final ending of the game you get a "the making of" dev area that shows them all off.

The Heroes and Light advanced section with the teleporting guy. Took me ages to figure out how it works on the orangey yellow beams. I got it in the end though.

I got to the first ending and still have a bunch of skipping stones to do. Mirrors at least you can trial and error but stones are almost all timing based and multi-step and it's a huge pain in the ass to run through ideas seeing if you can be fast enough. I'm also just shit at visualizing multiple steps in advance, at least most other puzzles you can plan it out then reevaluate at each step to see how it's going compared to the plan.

I was stuck here for a while and took a break. I came back and solved it instantly. Works every time.

Why does it feel like there are as many Skipping Stones puzzles as there are of all of the other puzzles put together?
>>
>>750379235
I see you have not reached the bard segment of the map.
