There are exceptions such as Golden Sun's puzzles (a much refreshing thing in the sub genre) but that's the thing. You don't build characters since the stats are all set in stone you just watch your party members stats automatically go up. You don't have choices in what to do in quests. You don't have multiple approaches to problems, where roleplaying exists ie. do you get past this obstacle with a sneaky manner (rogue) or you just bash the door open (warrior)? Everything is railroaded into combat, and even there the choice you have is minimal, it boils down to what, which party members to use? JRPGs are almost a walking contradiction of sorts, because the only gameplay you have is combat and often it is not deep enough to stay entertaining for 40hours+ of encounters, which are also often non-stop, be it random encounters or the way the original Trails in the Sky did, where you have an enemy in the map and it dashes towards you at 300km/h, in practice being the same shit as random encounters, they are not avoidable at all.

If any JRPG has ever come close to perfection, this is the one. I'm not saying that it's novel. Or that it does anything special.
