YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO LEARN JAPANESE YOU BETRAYED ME FOR CLAUDE
>>
>>750568040
I never had any interest in the japanese language.
I had interests in genociding localizers, and LLMs are doing just that.
>>
>>750568040
Take your shirt off or I’ll have Claude take it off for you.
>>
>>750568040
I intend to migrate to japan this year as a student.
>>
>>750568040
I learned JP years before AI was even remotely good at translating. Even then I had people tell me; "You'll just waste your time bro, when you get good enough AI will already be translating everything bro".
Guess what, it didn't fucking happen.
>>
I don't even know English!
>>
>>750568040
make your language easier to learn if you want people to care, you fucking stupid cunt
>>
What would I even play? A couple Konami games?
>>
>>750568236
>Guess what, it didn't fucking happen.
Except it literally did happen and you did waste your time.
>>
>>750568195
Whats the point of that if she is covered by the book and its not a full body shot anyway
>>
>>750568040
I'm glad I learned Japanese. It's a great feeling not having to rely on cucklations and being able to interact with Japanese media the right way.
>>
>>750568236
Nigga we are literally seeing tons of games being translated and quickly fixed. And trannylators are at least trying to finish things faster instead of letting years pass for donations
>>
but you told me i can't do it...
>>
I'm already too deep to quit but translating stuff by hand has started to feel like fools work
I could turn days of hard work into mere hours if I just swallowed my pride and proofread what AI churns out
It has made TL work feel cheap and meaningless, like anyone could do it. Well, I guess the one thing I have over the average guy is that I can actually proofread while they must trust the machine blindly
I see games like MGQ paradox take years upon years to be translated due to its gargantuan size and it's making me think what's the point, the end result is not going to be so different from what MTL can already do
>>
>>750568528
>proofreading machine translated output
Professional translators have been doing that for years, obviously sometimes you have to correct things due to wrong context or whatever but it's been a meme tier profession since like a decade or more

AI makes it insanely easy to learn any language now, it's quite literally the best teacher at any practical question you can ask.
>>
>>750568676
They haven't. Language isn't code, if you know the language on a near native level, it requires zero effort for you to translate something from it. It's unironically easier to translate without any assists if you're a professional. HOWEVER the cost of translation still went down to nothing because of google translate, wages went down too and it did become a meme career. Even thought it didn't get any easier. Absolutely cursed skill to have
>>
japanese is way too easy on the eyes and ears to not learn

Agreed, it's a beautiful language. Elegant, expressive. Efficient in its compactness, even.
>>

Japan adds a unique twist of adding RND to how words are written. You have to memorize every single writing along with every single reading, there are no rules really, only suggestions
>>
>>750569369
not pointless when it saves you time to whip out a device to translate, speaking yourself is also more desirable
>>
>>750569326
Nah Japanese is fucked due to its isolated evolution, most European languages share the same logic of expression and are easily learned if you're European etc, meanwhile Japanese uses its own circus logic that doesn't make sense unless you're born into it
>>
>>750568920
that's just slang, at the AI still teaches you the meaning
>>
>>750569089
I play games and watch shows in Japanese all the time. There's almost always an English version available, but being able to practice a foreign language makes it feel less like a waste of time.

While still far from perfect, MTL has gotten extremely good.
For anything your life does not depend on, it's more than just fine.
>>
>>750569365
Kana is horrible. Japs took a perfectly reasonable logical system of kanji, realized it doesn't fit their verbal language very well and just added a bunch of random kana to it here and there as a crutch and used kanji as a mere suggestion of meaning rather than something you can actually reliably read. So everything got fucked because they didn't want to commit to either system, now every kanji has 2-4 readings depending on context. What the fuck
>inb4 ummm actually there are rules to what readings you use
Everything is an exemption, there are no rules, the whole language is vibecoded
>>
>>750569542
He said a decade or more, we didn't have LLMs back then, we just had google translate. Yeah it's easier to do it from scratch than deal with that nonsense
>>
>>750569713
You are a massive retard for saying kanji are a "perfectly reasonable logical system".

>2-4 readings depending on context
Go check out Mandarin, a version of japanese with only Kanji and no kana. There's about 50 interpretations for every character.

MTL hasn't been dogshit since like 2015. Not true, I know chinese and the vast majority of characters in standard mandarin have one standard pronounciation, with a few having two (and I think only one or two having three)
However, when you start getting into classical chinese/historical stuff (this can include chengyu/names/placenames) it's true that most characters can have multiple pronounciations and meanings. It's somewhat complicated to explain why, but the important thing is that even alot of modern chinese don't know the proper pronounciation for every character in these situations.

>>750569713
imo if you know chinese it's easier to tell in which situation to use which reading, if it's a chinese word or makes sense in chinese you use the chinese-derived pronouncation, otherwise the japanese one

AI translation is most effective when done by the actual author. The author does not need to know the target language, but the AI does need to know about the characters, their traits, what's a pun, what information should be hidden (like when an unseen character's gender should be specified vs hidden for a classic "it's a girl!?" reveal), etc.
Of course, this requires involvement from the author.
>>
>>750571218

>>750568040
you still need to learn japanese to actually talk to people or consume japanese media.
needing to constantly pause the anime or having someone wait for you to whip out your phone to use AI to translate is tedious.
maybe there'll be a time where you can implant some chip in your brain to translate in real-time, but even then people will probably not respect you for relying on AI to talk with them rather than putting the effort in to learn their language.
AI can be beneficial for learning, but using it as a shortcut is a crux that will ultimately result in failure.

Japanese was a language long before any writing system got involved.
When the Chinese characters made it across the sea, the Japanese used those characters to write down their own language.
While they also gained words from Chinese at the time, they forced new readings onto them to make them fit their own language.

Nah, it's just the overabundance of things to do. When you can do anything you do nothing, or at most you lock in into a few simple things. Like people who download entire romsets then never actually use them because having 3000 roms appear on screen at once is (understandingly) overwhelming.
Not saying that short form content and waging doesn't have an effect tho. There are times you just want to drop in bed and idle doing nothing.

B-but anons told me that LLM translation wasn't very good or accurate? Is it superior and more accurate now compared to just learning the language?

Hell, we've always had translation apps on our phones. I just think it's a bit awkward and weird to walk around Japan holding my phone up to anyone I'm talking with so it can translate my speech and then translate their speech. To me it would still feel cooler to actually learn the language and be able to speak it, read it, and write it. That shows more skill/talent and dedication to something.

You've actually been studying Japanese every day on Duolingo for 458 days? What would you say your mastery/level is at this point? Like how confident are you in speaking and reading the language? Are you N4 at least? N3? I don't actually know how proficient Duolingo will make you, figured it won't take you all the way to N1 level.

What is the best and easiest way to learn Kanji if i don't like WaniKani or Anki cards?
>>
>>750573391

>>
>>750573412
Either actually moving to Japan or Anki cards, whether you like them or not. The only way to learn vocab is by repetition and/or usage and for 90% of actually used kanji hoping to see them in the wild enough is not viable either.
>tldr: stop being a pussy and do you're reps faggot.
>>
>>750569558
Duolingo is pretty shit at this. It favors instant gratification. I tried it and really didn't see the point. I don't mind gamification but it forces my brain to take shortcuts to "win", and shortcuts don't lead to information retention.

Kanji and kana are very helpful for beginners to Asian languages, they're just an early filter. I'm intermediate and reading kana only text slows me down considerably. If you split reading and listening equally from the start like 90% of learners do, your brain is hardwired to primarily associate kanji with the meaning when reading. If you are a native you do not have this as you learn by listening and speaking for a couple of years before you learn to read and write.
>>750573391
>>750573481
>>750573591
Duolingo is designed to keep you from progressing, the same as every single paid language service. It also teaches you absolutely nothing about the real language apart from the absolute basics. Duolingo anon, I hope you also immerse a lot, but either way please move to Anki instead and you will notice your gains skyrocket.

Yes, I did RTK first and my vocab deck had both recall and recognition cards, it's actually quite simple when you get into the radicals and patterns, the hardest part is remembering e.g. which gi is being used in 義務 (義 議 儀) etc than drawing the kanji itself, sometimes they make sense based on the kanji meaning but a lot of the time it feels random
>>
>>750573870
Japanese people can't do it either.

ATTENTION ANKIDRONES

Struggling with motivation for your reps? Want the best results in the least amount of time spent per day? Here are the settings for your main mining deck:

>New cards/day: 10
>Maximum reviews/day: 10
>Learning steps: 10m
>New/review order: Show before reviews
>FSRS: On

You should not be spending more than 30 minutes on Anki.

>inb4 "oh muh srs, i need to have the max review limit at 9999 and review hundreds of cards everyday otherwise ill forget them"
FSRS is smart and takes the time spent with each due card going unreviewed into account, just relax and enjoy the smaller Anki workload every day. Also even if that weren't the case, until you reach fluency, extra time immersing is x100 more valuable than spending more time reviewing cards. This is why Anki tryhards are usually failing to make significant language progress, they spend most of their allotted Japanese time doing reviews instead of immersing.
>>
>>750574413
I personally didn't like the radical names it used and preferred to find the real meanings online even if it took some searching, the important part of RTK is the order it introduces radicals in and the mnemonic logic you use to remember them (I also thought the mnemonics RTK used were iffy and made my own)

It goes from the simplest kanji and builds up to the complex ones so when you get to them you can just remember them as combinations of the simple kanji and radicals you already know

think about the number of times you have spoken to a non native english speaker

people just overthink the whole speaking thing desu
just try your best

Oh I'm sure he toned the level down and also forgave my pronunciation being all over the place but we managed to get our point across without any real roadblocks so I chalk it up as a win.
I also quickly forget about keigo when I get stressed because I have next to no speaking practice, but I made sure to say that before we started and most Japanese don't even expect a gaijin to use keigo anyways.

>>750568856

I've for some reason never heard anyone say this but I think it's not the language itself necessarily, but how Japanese people are highly skilled at using their voice. It's seriously unique in the world (as are many things from Japan). Things like changing the pitch and voice quality to sound cute or cool, and then just continuing to speak like that throughout your life. Even just the basic way to pronounce Japanese without "changing your voice" is at a higher level than other languages.

I have never spent more than 40 minutes in anki a day and I rushed through 6k at 25 new/day at first and 15-20 later on. When the numbers started going down I added some extra decks because I feel like at least spending 20 minutes a day on something Japanese is important, as I don't really have the time to read every single day.
I do not care about schedulers because they assume I want to learn every word with the same zeal and that's just not true. I manually put words wherever I want when I fuck them up according to how much I care.

Ngl I'm kind of impressed at the ankibros actually a) spending months doing hundreds of anki reps b) actually putting together hundreds of anki cards.

I tried doing anki and ignoring how tedious it was to setup every pre-made deck I could find was insanely difficult/outright impossible despite the fact that I can muddle through video games in Japanese and grok like half of what's being said/written.
