The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis turns 38 today, what are your favorite games on the system and overall thoughts on it?

Sonic 3&K is still an impressive title. Length, style, music, design. I watched this a while ago and it gave me an even bigger appreciation for it.

I love the Mega-CD. There's something extremely soulful about early CD consoles/addons.

A crazy idea I had for homebrew years ago, I think claude could do it today:

Mega CD BIOS reads sectors 0–15 of the CD to check for copyright, then hands off to the game. Game assets are accessed via an ISO 9660 filesystem.

Neo Geo CD
The BIOS ignores sectors 0–15. Instead, it starts at sector 16. It also uses ISO 9960.

This means you could hypothetically create a game that works on both Sega Mega CD & Neo Geo CD. They would mostly occupy their own area on the disc because graphics are formatted differently, though you could potentially share audio files which is the biggest part of 16 bit cd games.

Another possibility:

dreamcast supports multi session discs. On a multi-session disc, each session has its own independent sector 0. Session 1 gets the Mega cd & Neo cd header; session 2 gets the Dreamcast header. They never overlap. It might be possible to create a triple boot game.

Best on Sega: Earthworm Jim 1/2, Turrican 3, Valis 3, Ys 3, Out of this world, Pitfall CD, Dungeon Explorer, Shadowrun, Xenocrisis, Doom Resurrection,

The only Ws SNES has is chrono trigger and Mega Man X.

A few years ago I stumbled upon a model 1 with a bunch of games and accessories at a garage sale and bought it on a whim despite not really having any interest in it or older Sega in general. Ordered a cheap everdrive clone for it and ended up playing the shit out of it over the summer, unironically had a heckin' blast and I think it might be my favorite system when I'm in the mood for retro gaming.

Favorite game is Contra Hard Corps, that game still completely destroys anything modern indies shit out.

Nintendo SFX2 is SIX TIMES faster than cpu. What would be the ultimate sega enhancement chip?

RP2040 Coprocessor ($1):
•Offload logic so CPU/VDP max out sprites. Scrolling/collision math on 32X lets SH-2s focus on 60fps full screen bitmaps.
•AI for RTS or logic game (Factorio).
•2D object physics, destructible terrain (Worms)
•Modern compression: 20mb/s feels like 60mb/s.
•Geometry: 32X fills polygons well but struggles at vertex math. Handles Transform, Clipping, and Z-position. Feels 5th Gen now.

Lattice iCE40UP5K FPGA ($5):
•Sprite Scaler+Compositor: Transform every sprite/tile. Psuedo Parralax. VDP bottlenecks but 32X surpasses Neo Geo.
•Palette Sequencer: MD can change palette during H-Blank to reach 512 colors but CPU is too busy.Chip holds color table and blasts palettes to CRAM during H-Blank. Combine with the compositor for true transparency.
•Blitter: Blasts sprites from ROM to 32X VRAM. This alone makes Doom 60fps.
•Priority masking: Automates hole-punching in MD layer so 32X can do complex layering.

8mb SDRAM ($1):
•32X cart can send sprites straight to frame buffer. Allows thousands of sprites and can que up data for 32X burst mode (8 words in 12 cycles) so SH-2s never wait again.
•Lighting: Freed by the blitter and RAM, SH-2s gain idle time for dynamic lighting. lmao

With the RAM and the blitter alone you can easily port Symphony of the Night, Castlevania Chronicles, Resident Evil, Galerians, TRAG, Suikoden, Strider 2, Darius Gaiden, Gradius Gaiden, Policenauts, Baroque, Intelligent Qube, Community Pom, Brave Prove, Sexy Parodius, Langrisser 4, Rhapsody, SF Alpha 3, Neo Geo games, Parasite Eve, Oddworld, Star Fox 64, Grandia, Front Mission 3, Persona 2, Doom 64, Star Ocean 2 and Tales of Eternia. In fact, they would be the definitive versions because they would have no load times and the 32Xs bitmaps would actually look better than the compressed pre rendered Backgrounds on ps1.

Cyborg Justice. It's a beat em up with robots. The controls are beyond fucked, but you can literally rip the limbs from your enemies and use them yourself, or against them. Very cool, especially for the time.

Comix Zone is short but its unique, probably a bit to hard but its made for multiple playthroughs

Ristar was an instant classic as soon as it loaded up, amazing game

some niche titles I would recommend are Rolo to the Recue and Mr Nutz both solid titles (don't cheat with save states you casuals)

Granada, Desert Strike, the entire strike series really, Battletech, all the sanic hegehog games, Earthworm Jim series, Vectorman, Ganres, pretty much all the light gun games were good, but Terminator was the best. Robocop vs Terminator, Alien 3. Thats about it. I think in terms of the value you got out of it the genesis was in the top three consoles of all time.
>>
>>750596082
Shinobi III is a great action game but hardly difficult. Revenge is tougher but far from impossible.

>>750588506
There's basically nothing of note for the entire add-on. All the actual devs were making PCE games instead, the best Sega managed were a few ports.

>>
>>750598890
Ecco 1&2, Earthworm Jim, Shining Force, Final Fight CD, Robo Aleste, The Terminator, Lunar games and the better versions of Snatcher and Popful Mail. The Sega CD's main fault was not being on a console popular in Japan, but it was the better hardware to a fault. The coprocessing hardware made the addon more expensive than it had any need to be.

Only got to play with it once during my childhood, but I recently did a 50 game deep dive into the system and I found these games to be my favorites, in order:

>Castlevania Bloodlines
>Sonic games
>Gunstar Heroes
>Phantasy Star IV
>Shadowrun
>Panorama Cotton
>Ecco, FUCK that last level though
>>
>>750588818
the lore behind that game is really nice. they really tried to do the best they could to the point the studio did nothing else because they were tired of so much work and almost broke marriages.

just like alien soldier made by a programmer of gunstar heroes trying to squeeze the hardware as a passion project. it would have been a bigger game it the higher would not needed a game in a certain deadline.

I don't like comparisons between snes and genesis without context.
without enhancements chips the snes want capable of much things unlike the genesis even when they used hiroms.

I can't deny the amount of colors, mode7 and samples. but the console really struggled a lot in other areas

btw that starfos is already running like 50% faster than the snes one.

I just got one. Despite playing my mate's one a lot back in the day i never actually had one myself.
I got one recently and a flash cart.
I've been playing all the games that are at least decent (Review score of at least 70, user rating at least 6.5) in release order.
What shocks me is just how many shitt shootemups are on the thing.
Some are ok, but for every MUSHA there's 99 "Xenon 2's", "Bio Ship Paladin's" and "Battle Squadron's".
