https://www.afp.com/en/nintendo-producer-all-nervous-zelda-classic-remake-hits-shelves

Producer Eiji Aonuma has expressed nervousness regarding how players will receive the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which arrives on November 5th. In an interview with Japan Today—part of a conversation with AFP—the developer admitted that he cannot stop thinking about how the release will be received.

"I'm very nervous about the launch of the Ocarina remake because I don't know how it will turn out; I can't stop thinking about it," said Aonuma, who has worked on the series for over 25 years. The original game was released in 1998 and marked his first project alongside his mentor, Shigeru Miyamoto.

Aonuma also highlighted the involvement of younger team members in the development process—some of whom had never played the original Ocarina of Time. According to the producer, this group's contributions were instrumental in determining how to adapt the game and ensure it remains fun to play with modern control schemes.

The report describes this remake as the most ambitious among the series' various reimaginings, arriving during the 40th-anniversary celebrations of The Legend of Zelda. Aonuma expressed interest in seeing the ideas these younger professionals bring to future titles, noting that he intends to mentor them and collaborate on the future of the franchise.

shouldn’t it be mandatory to at least play the game that you’re remaking? What the fuck???

Miyamoto famously said he doesn't hire people who play video games
>>
>>750624180
Well I guess it’s worked out for them then since Nintendo games are good
>>
>>750623950
>what they’ll imagine next

The fuck does that even mean?
>>
>>750624213
I never questioned their hiring practices
>>

It’s right there

>Aonuma expressed interest in seeing the ideas these younger professionals bring to future titles
>>
>>750624180
Aonuma said the same thing in interviews on BotW. He said
>I actually go out of my way to hire folks who maybe don't understand video games that well.
>I think you're a more interesting employee if you love doing scuba diving and want to work on our swimming mechanics, than if you're some guy who knows the 5 best swim mechanics from other video games you played.
Pretty based desu
>>
>>750624281
Yu Suzuki has a similar design philosophy but the problem is he’s old and can’t find good talent to work at his company.
>>
>>750623984
No. A good remake will ideally have at least some people who have never touched the original. They bring a different perspective and won't be afraid to ask "Emperor's New Clothes" style questions the way someone who played and loved the original might shy away from for fear of killing a sacred cow. Take jumping for example. No one who played the original OoT would think to add a jump button, because the auto jump worked great. But then you take a step back and realize that it was just a creative solution to a hardware limitation and no, it probably is fine to add a jump button. You need people with that perspective.
>>
>>750624213
>Nintendo post Iwata
>good
Name 3 games. You have over a decade to work with. Shit like metroid dread doesn't count, I'm talking in house developed games only.
>>
>>750624492
Nintendo will basically create an entirely different game for the sequel to their series. I know they said BOTW was inspired by the original Zelda but the new games in their series are always drastically different.
>>
>>750624281
that's why eiji aonuma is a hack and 3D zelda has only ever been good in spite of him and not because of him. it's this kind of bullshit that led to twilight princess being a fucking horribly paced disaster. someone who played games would have been able to tell him that it sucked.
compare it to a director like kamiya, who plays a lot of games and constantly refers to games he loves in his design process. kamiya could make 3D zelda (and has, see okami), but aonuma could never make devil may cry, or bayonetta, or wonderful 101
>>
>>750624492
...I have no words for how stupid this post is. Congratulations I suppose. Maybe you should apply to Nintendo, seems like you'd fit in well.

Finally some actual vidya discussion. I don’t care if you faggots are arguing, i enjoy reading everyone’s perspectives. Please continue.

>>750624281
>>750624492
But that's proving to be a double-edged sword now, because since they weren't experienced with gaming much/at all before coming in, that means what they work on going forward is just going to just pull from a very small pool of what they initially worked on. Look at how they keep putting that goddamn BotW weapon menu into other games, for example. For a remake, that means they're not beholden strictly to the original, but beholden strictly to a very different style of game that THEY worked on instead.
>why do you have multiple item buttons? we don't do that in BOTW
>why do you have shield controls independent from targeting? we don't do that in BOTW I know this started in TP but they likely didn't play that
>why do you have crouch stabbing? we don't do that in BOTW
etc, etc and it's not just Zelda; BotWbrain has infected other Nintendo IPs BADLY
>>
>>750623950

Grim
>>
>>750624624

yep, it's over
>>
>>750624281
wait, wasn't aonuma bragging about how his staff on TotK played red dead redemption 2 and shit?
>>
>>750624585
And yet Nintendo built a monolith out of these design philosophies and you're sitting here jerking it to anime cartoons. Listening to le "fans" (autistic trannies) is how we got shit like Crash 4. Indie devs frequently fall into this trap of trying overly hard to please 'tismos and missing the point of what makes games special. As much as people like you bitch about casuals and the like some of the greatest/acclaimed games of all time are geared to the casual player because surprise surprise making a game fun over making it an autism simulator that pleases precisely 5 people for 5 seconds doesn't please that many people

>Take jumping for example. No one who played the original OoT would think to add a jump button, because the auto jump worked great. But then you take a step back and realize that it was just a creative solution to a hardware limitation and no, it probably is fine to add a jump button
>hardware limitation
?
You have an L button that toggles the minimap that could've easily been a jump button if they bothered to use the D-Pad for anything. What is it with people presuming "something more modern wasn't in this older game, clearly they couldn't have done it"? Furthermore, the auto-jump was a conscious choice that's akin to the classic Tomb Raider grid system: when you go running off that ledge, you know exactly where Link is going to go and how to account level design for it, compared to less skillful or time-efficient players jumping and mashing that may be missing good ledge grabs should they not be generous enough.
As you say, auto-jumps work great for the games, but they're a deliberate choice, not some sort of bizarre holdback. Manual Jumping got added to BotW because it fits that game's open, non-linear design to be able to hop and climb on damn near anything. Doesn't mean all Zelda suddenly absolutely NEEDS to have manual jumping like it's an infallible addition that can't be retracted, especially since it fucks inventory management in the remake now.

>>750624551
1. You can't criticize TP pacing (really not an issue outside the collect the bugs twilight sections) and then in the same breath praise Kamiya for Okami. Okami is a horribly paced boring slog of a game.
2. Aonuma is not the problem, the problem is and always has been Nintendo corporate culture mixed with Jap corporate culture. Aonuma doesn't want to make Zelda. He has not wanted to make Zelda since post Wind Waker. He has gone on record begging the other execs to get him the fuck off of Zelda and on to something else, anything else, because he has no interest in Zelda anymore. And that was 20 fucking years ago. But Miyamoto and the other Corpo chuds just told him, "sorry buddy, you're the Zelda guy. Oh what's that? I get to make Pikmin nobody gives a shit about and my retarded starfox zero flop? No you only work on Zelda, nothing else, and no one else is allowed to take your place." Fucking nightmarish when you think about it. Like the Dev variant of the one hit wonder band forced to tour their one song from 20 years ago.
>>
>>750623984
That's stupid. The original devs hadn't played it either since they hadn't made it yet.
>>
>>750624748
Yep. Also, for BotW he discussed how he/staff on BotW played games like Skyrim and took notes from them.
>>750624690
People read about how Shigesato Itoi was a seasoned traveler/hobbyist and that radicalized the fuck out of their ideas on game design.

The UI thing seems like a top down company mandate. All their games from the switch era onwards have the same soulless white text UI and horrific AI sounding "you got a star" voice acting. I'm fucking dreading the OoT VA work. Whoever is in charge of VA direction at Nintendo themselves is less qualified than a bioware writer. When you compare in house nintendo VA direction to something like FE FW it's absurd.
>>
>>750624752
My point was that if you think implementing a jump button is worth mentioning you are retarded. It obviously doesn't effect or break the game in any meaningful way and is the standard set from TotK onwards so helps with familiarity for the newer audience. That's not innovation that's obvious common sense. Hell, I can't remember if SS started the jump button because I don't give a shit to look it up and I can't recall anything from that piece of shit other than the fucking Imprisoned's toes.
>>
>>750624935
I haven’t played much of the more recent Nintendo games since i just got a switch 2. I decided to try out the star fox demo and holy shit you’re right the VA. Everyone talks to you like a retard and hearing how Rob 64 sounds now is completely disappointing.

I think part of it is that these games also share internal development pipelines. Breath of the Wild straight up shares engine code with Super Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2. By the time you hit Tears of the Kingdom, everything looks and feels exactly the same on the surface, but they're on a new iteration past Splatoon 3's release and functionally rebuilt a ton of shit under the hood to accommodate for Master Hand and all that other crap with the evolved physics systems. And thus Donkey Kong Bananza, Echoes of Wisdom, Star Fox remake, and now Ocarina of Time Remake all share elements of that exact same pipeline you can literally see at the seams if you know what to look for between each of these games, that "distinct modern Nintendo feel" in motion.
So when you get a bunch of devs recursively trained and programming internally on the same iterations of the same evolving and rebuilt engine over and over and over across the span of the past 9 years, from the Switch 1 release and Wii U finale to now, yeah, everything looks the same because they're all running mostly the same tools with their own derivative tweaks and the same general training, so everyone's copypasting the same damn UI designs and scripting too.
>>
>>750623950
>never played the N64 game
They have that in common with the vast majority of tendies!
>>
>>750623950
fucking LOL
reminds me of the news article of new Thi4f devs never played the OG thief games and has to use skyrim and asscreed as reference.
>>
>>750624281
This makes a lot of sense but so do the other anons calling out the drawbacks of this mentality. Ideally you'd have a mix of both types of people 50% game fans and 50% who don't play games and are just a professional
>>
>>750623950
have they confirmed that the remake is outsourced yet or are they still keeping quiet on that
>>
>>750625149
While that does account for the explanation it is not an excuse. UI design is not fucking dictated by engine, it is dictated by effort. It's not a physics based interaction or processing limitation, it's a concious choice of pngs. They have taken a totally soulless route with zero innovation and expressiveness and it isn't the engine's fault strictly.
>>
>>750625273
I doubt they outsourced a remake of a game of this magnitude but you never know…
>>
>>750624935
>I'm fucking dreading the OoT VA work
Ganondorf is Matt Mercer and Navi is Cassandra Lee Morris, they will be playing a phoned in version of themselves that they've played in whatever anime dub with zero direction they needed to pay the bills, and you will like it :)
>>
>>750625273
Why would it matter? 1:1 or close to 1:1 remakes are not difficult to produce. It's like buying a house and painting the walls before flipping it. There's nothing to really do right or wrong outside of initial art direction. It's extremely low risk and this retard market of nostalgia fucks rewards such low effort slop.
>>
>>750625149
You're a complete midwit and you have no idea what you're talking about. OoT is built off a modified SM64 engine. Sharing engine code is the norm and always has been. You don't want devs reinventing the wheel every time, that's why there are game engines.
And there are no "seams" shared between the god damn Star Fox remake and Donkey Kong Bananza. Star Fox uses a custom engine built by a third-party studio. Stay in your lane you absolute fucking retard.

One of the biggest marks against the newbie devs at Nintendo is the horrid fucking character select menu they made for Mario Kart World, namely in making costumes separate slots and making the icons huge as shit so that you have to do a lot of scrolling if you wanna pick a costume or someone that isn't a mainstay character. It's almost certainly influenced by Mario Kart Tour.
>>750625273
Aonuma talking with such intimate knowledge of the devs seems like a pretty big soft-confirmation that it's in-house.
>>
>>750625341
It's not even about the actors the problem is the director. Whoever the fuck the nintendo VA director is is quite possibly the least qualified person for the job in the entire game industry including the western game industry. Literally worse than hamburger helper and I will stand on that. The individual actors themselves are not that bad but when they get put on an in house nintendo game the results are dogshit. Whoever the fuck it is is the common denominator.
>>
I hope they don't demake MM
>>
>>750625339
They outsourced all the writing for TotK to a low budget phone game studio, you never know
>>
He has played it and he's the guy in charge to make sure it's in line with the original.
>>
>>750624281
This only works if the guys in question has some design experience or are REALLY fast learners. It's also kind of ironic that the "non-gaymores" came up with the WORST possible combat and exploration mechanics for BOTW and TOTK, which was only saved by the phenomenal level design in BOTW.

You can't really hire a cook who has never touched a pan in their entire lives and you can't hire a trucker that has never been behind the wheel. People learn and experience really is the best teacher but if they have no prior to go off of then there is no telling what they might fuck up or succeed at., Aunoma should have been that balancing anchor but he most likely are/were too nice or too spineless to actually push back on things that were bad about the games (unless he actually thought that these games were god as is).

The dumbed down puzzles in the remake so far more or less proves that they are more interested in just selling toys to manchildren than they are with making people/kids learn from their experience with the game or actually "experience" anything, their view on games is so rigid that it becomes equally toxic to the guys forcing fags and troons into everything.

I'm sure there are plenty of people passionate about Zelda but until the boomer old guard literally dies they won't have creative control. That's the shitty downside of Jap work culture. On one hand the positive is no one gets fired so you aren't going to see Nintendo pull the degenerate western industry mass layoff when a game gets released. The negative is you have geriatrics at the wheel and by the time they retire their replacements are jaded old fucks that would have been passionate 20 years ago but had all of their vitality drained waiting for their turn.

Having used this website for a frighteningly long time, I have at last come across the stupidest thing ever postee on /v/. Sure anon, the NINTENDO 64 couldn't handle a jump button. The designers couldn't have just made Jump the default A action when moving instead of a roll. You absolute fucking bucketbrained retard.

OoT literally had a manual jump until very late in development. It had nothing to do with hardware limitations. Its removal was a conscious decision on the developers' part.

Japan isn’t as infatuated with Zelda as a series like the west is. The “OoT is the most important game ever!” mantra is mostly a western thing.
