Emulation, the system has to consume a shitload of resources simulating a console enviroment for the games to run in, but if you recompile games, they run on native code, and almost seamlessly, for instance, there is a retroarch app for jailbroken switch 1 consoles, you can emulate wii and gamecube games, twilight princess runs like horseshit, this year a recomp of Twilight princess was released called "Dusk" that was later recomp'd for switch 1 hardware and runs like a dream
