It's great if you play it, but I agree. This series filtered me until I became a bored has-been and actually tried it as an adult, simply because 12 year old me saw Sora's giant shoes in a magazine commercial for the game back in the day and thought "Not cool."
The outgoing appeal of this franchise is not obvious. It's a fucking weird crossover, but it's also very typical Square to do something like this. All of their games are fucking weird, desu.

The game doesn't really feel like the magical adventure it seems like its meant to be, all the disney worlds just feel bland and lifeless with basically no one in them. Pretty bland from an artstyle perspective too.
Its like these worlds are meant to be post apocalyptic but no one acts like it is.

actually... You're right. I love the game overall somehow but almost every world feels a pain to get through. The design of almost everywhere is janky.
The poor level design is offset by how good the other aspects of the game are though. The combat system is impressive for the time, the story and characters are charming enough to keep you invested and obviously the music and art direction are iconic.

Kingdom Hearts is a game that would probably benefit from a remake

The difference is that in KH2 all you ever do is move forward or backward, and every cutscene ends by pointing you towards the next event. In KH1 they clearly were trying to make them actual levels that you're supposed to walk around in, but it clashes with the story-heavy design of the game, so they fixed that in 2, but to the detriment of having more exploration to do.

The only worlds I didn't like were Atlantica for being too confusing to navigate, and Mosntro for a similar reason.
Wonderland could have used more weird settings from the movie, yet I liked how it handled the room being reoriented.
Monstro could have used more room variety too.
Neverland was fine but it was a let down it was only the ship. I am glad you explored more of it in 358/2 Days and BBS.
