Have you thought about learning another language by playing videogames? It requires some patience at first but it's a great way to learn
I've been learning french for around two years mostly by playing RPGs and taking some time to translate and search for info when I need to

Playing games while learning a language makes it feel less like a waste of time.
>>
>>750704753
Yes and it works great.
FF16, dragon's dogma 2, onimusha are some modern games that are great for learning with voices, which is extremely important to me. gyakuten saiban series is great as a text-only game or visual novel.

By the way the star wars galactic racer ENG to JAP localization is what I'd probably point at as a garbage localization. Extreme liberties taken and Shade uses very blatant feminine language in the Japanese text, regardless of sex of the avatar chosen. Localizers must learn that every well-executed translation of intent is +1 points and every excessive liberty -10.

I learned English through video games to the point that I've translated some games into my language.
Now I'm learning Japanese the same way, but it's much harder, so even now, after 4 years, I still need to look up things often, although this depends on the difficulty of text and on the themes - I mostly play fantasy games, so if I suddenly play a sci-fi one, there will be more words I don't know.
But funny thing about studying a language by doing something you like, like playing video games in this case, is that it increases the fun. I may need twice (or more) time to finish a game in Japanese than in English or my language, but on the other hand, I can enjoy and finish a 6/10 game that I'd drop after an hour if I played it in one of the other languages.

Sure they can. For instance, Jisho lists sense 1 as being
>devising (a way); contriving; inventing; thinking up; figuring out; coming up with; working out
So now we know that it's a する verb that can be used when we wanna say we've come up with something:
>強いボスを倒すために、装備や戦い方を工夫する
>To defeat a strong boss, I devise equipment and strategies.
Easy.

You can't apply English logic to Japanese. There are some things that you can only learn through intuition and exposure to lots of different contexts. Eventually, you'll naturally develop a feel for them and know when someone is using them incorrectly, even if you can't explain why.
>>
>>750719820
Why does it have Parkinson’s?
>>
>>750721878
yeah so
jmdict translations are sometimes just a general idea or description of what the Japanese word, term or expession is supposed evoke. Often you can't apply the translation literally at all in any sense, you have to apply it like a "localization". This is really hard to do as a beginner and as a result beginners are raped in the ass by lack of support.
for words which are suru verbs and adjectives, the jmdict entry often doesn't even bother to give different example translations for the verb form and for the na-adjective form, it usually just gives you one noun and you have to imagine what that would be like as verb or adjective
jmdict without example sentences is absolutely futile for learning, you sometimes need example sentences and more context.
only jmdict extra as example sentences and usually only one, which is too few.
jmdict categorizations are often false and generally not reliable, like which words are na and no adjectives, which are suru verbs etc. In many dictionary entries for generic, unremarkable words attention to this area lacking.
jmdict alone is not sufficient for learning. Is it really the only freely available JP-EN dictionary or had been so for a long time? I can't believe it
>>
>>750721820

I'm such a fucking retard loser lmao it's crazy that I even had the audacity and delusion to think that I will be able to pull it off knowing myself
I had a plan, kana -> anki -> immersion, vidya, vns, manga, just doing whatever the fuck but reading daily and consistently (which applies pretty much universally to anything you would want to learn/become better at) fully aware that it will take a long time and I just get to enjoy the ride
as you can see I'm done with anki which took some time but I got there, now comes the most fun and exciting part and the reason why I started doing it in the first place and... uh.. nothing in almost 2 months lol, 0 vns played, 0 manga read, 0 games finished in japanese, reps keep piling up, I just can't bring myself to do it even if I have gorillions of terabytes of available material in native language right at my fingertips

I guess the point of my sad faggot sob story is that you (hopefully) know yourself better than anyone and if you wanted to learn japanese you would have started years ago without giving yourself pathetic excuses like a weak bitch

Why'd you change the grammar? "It" is not the subject of the sentence. "It" is not doing anything. The speaker is asking the listener what kind of things THEY are devising.

The moral of the story is: to learn anything at all the most important thing isn't motivation, like your motivation to read your favourite stuff. The most important thing is discipline. There can be no "nah, I don't feel like it today" or "it's a special day, so just this once I'll take a break".
You do it, every day, whenever you have some free time. You do your anki reps in spare moments at work/school. You read on your phone/e-book reader while commuting. You play vidya at home. As long as it's physically possible.
Note, by the way, that you didn't lose just yet. If you have time to cry on 4chan dot org (formerly 4channel dot org (formerly 4chan dot org)), then you have time to get your shit together. It's not like you're starting from 0, you already have some knowledge.
>>
>>750727318
No, you're asking "どんな工夫をしている?". what 工夫 does it have? 工夫 refers not just to the action but the actual efforts of your 工夫ing (the fruits of racking your brains to come up with a method/solution/device).
I omitted the を to trip up newfags like you
>>
>>750727520
Uh, no, you're asking "What kind of 工夫 are you doing?" Literally:
>どんな (what kind of) 工夫 (contrivances, schemes, devisings) を (direct object particle) している (are [you] doing)?
I'm also not sure what you meant by "omitting the を" when your original sentence also contained the particle.
>>
>>750727890
>その台車にはどんな工夫をしているのですか?
>what (ingenious) modifications does this trolley have?
I guess the subject is the person after all (missed the に). Then again I hate that word, so I don't give a shit anymore
I'm pretty sure it's a source of endless headaches for japs as well

I strongly disagree, I lack discipline but am still learning passively almost everyday without leaving my cultural sphere. I have my twitter feed translated to jap via grok and learn this way and by watching documentaries and playing video games every now and then. But I don't do any more of the hard stuff like concentrated reading and plugging in headphones and using all your free time during the day to listen to japanese audio for passive learning. In my case doing these things more would certainly be safe to do because I'm genuinely slacking and being lazy right now, but in principle a conscious increase in discipline shouldn't bring about agony otherwise you'll lose motivation

I did have some more discipline in the first 2 years which were the most agonizing, but forcing yourself to do something must not entail the danger of becoming fed up with it altogether. If you feel like you're at risk of getting tired of it, the pace should be lowered.

In both Japanese sentences, the subject has to be an actual person performing the action because the verb is transitive. The only difference is that when you translated the second sentence into English, you turned the location complement (その台車に) into the subject, which is why you're having trouble determining who the agent is in the Japanese sentence.

There is a lot of truth to it, I don't know a single person who failed to learn JP or any language while being consistent.
It's mostly an EOP problem, if you're an ESL you've already learned another language and you know immersion is king. You actually need to study first in order for things to make a minimal amount of sense but afterward you should mainly read, read and read. Works for any language.
>>
>>750730875
I'd highly recommend holding off on reading Japanese for as long as possible, to read successfully you need to know
>how to read the kanji and the kana themselves
>what the words mean
>the grammar and sentence structure
>how words are pronounced including pitch accent
EOPs especially will learn the wrong accents and be stuck with them, and in general you want to only learn one thing at a time, I'd recommend first learning a small vocab through listening and romaji + translation and only then starting on mining kanji

You don't actively need to learn pitch accent but it's preferable to first hear a word pronounced by a native hundreds of times before trying to guess how it's read based on romaji or a short robotic clip so you don't get stuck with the wrong reading, if you ever want to speak Japanese irl it will matter a lot
>>
>>750731401
>it will mater a lot
nop
you never hear germans or other foreigners trying to correct their english accents, and you understand them perfectly fine
nobody cares about that
>>
>>750731159
I agree on everything except pitch accent, it's important but not mandatory. You don't need it if you're aiming for japanese comprehension first. Grammar and kana are definitely the most important. As for the words, well the safest thing is to go through a deck like the kaishi 1.5k before immersing but some people will need fewer words.
On a side note, I get dizzy every time I think about learning japanese without OCR. Early 2000s and earlier learners were truly fucking dedicated. I don't think everyone realize how simplified JP learning is nowadays.

English has a billion phonetic groups, accent doesn't matter. Dialects where they drop half the groups and slur the other half do matter but that's a different thing.
Even then, some foreigners really should just invest in Received Pronunciation, goddamn they're indecipherable.

Meanwhile I swear every other goddamn JP word starts with ka/ki/ku/ke/ko. At least for common words you probably want the accents on hand. But you can just change your accent as you go, I disagree with the other anon on that, English literally has several major completely fake taught accents, it's much easier than learning the language to begin with.

The only language worth learning is Japanese. Unfortunately I am in my mid-20s so my brain has fossilized and I can't learn new things anymore (unironically).

Doesn't help that I have low INT when it comes to language, I am so retarded I can barely talk my own native tongue or English.

The only thing I've learned is maybe 65% of hiragana because I was bored for a week and also the katakana for SAVE and LOAD because I've played so many goddamn porn VNs.

People talk about learning japanese from vidya and anime but that hasn't been my experience at all. In through one ear out from the other. I guess I'm just too stupid.

I'm trying, but I find it a bit disruptive to have to constantly interrupt the gameplay to toggle my OCR. Also I can't prove this however I feel like even in a very text/audio heavy game you get less language gains because your attention is split between the gameplay and language, not to mention all of the extra downtime where there is no language at all. I much prefer binging anime and visual novels right now since I'm just starting out.

>>
>>750731159
I don't know where this "hold off on reading" advice comes from but it's a load of shit. Just do 50/50 or, if you're worried about your accent for some reason, they do more listening than reading (most learners do this naturally anyway as we are all anime or YouTube watchers) at a 7:3 ratio or something.
Saying to not read at all, because natives don't learn to read for a while, is backwards logic. You are a person who could potentially accelerate language gains by doing both, and choosing to sacrifice that because you're scared of developing a bad accent (which you won't do if you just follow the regular guides) is very silly.

What I'm saying to you is, you need to let go of this part of yourself that is desiring strongly to be consuming media like a native from a very early stage. You have to recognize that's a long way off HOWEVER you are no slouch by being able to finish anything at this stage as well.

If it's any consolation, remember that you can always re-play, or re-read, as many times as you want, whenever you want in the future. You are not under any time constraint.

>often as …はともかく
From there, you just apply it.
>この料理の見た目は
>As for the appearance of this dish
>ともかく
>Setting (that) aside
>the taste is very good
There was no particular concept to understand other than the basic principle of Japanese being backwards in syntax to English.

Your second sentence works the same way, though, you're right that だけに does have three senses when functioning as a conjunction, though all three translate to the same base meaning of "because"
>as one would expect from ...; given that ... (naturally ...); because ...; being ...
^ because
>precisely because ...; all the more because of
^ because
>on account of ...; ... being what it is
^ because

Now because (no pun intended) we know it's a subordinating conjunction, all even have to do is apply it to the sentence
>試験のためによく勉強した
>(I) studied hard for the test
>だけに
>because (I did that)
>かえって、不合格のショックは大きかった
>the shock of failing was all the more great

Notice how simple it really is when we understand that the words and expressions are plug-and-play in language.

It's an overcompensation to fix a known failing of late AJATT after the original guys retired, it trained an entire generation of Japanese """fluent speakers""" into only understanding the spoken language when it was accompanied by written text. This of course, is not fluent. At some point everyone in the community noticed, panicked, and now all the other more modern guides recommend doing anime purely raw.
>>
>>750738070

But that's exactly how you get it to stick. On the contrary, if you don't understand that だけに is a coordinating conjunction, then you don't understand it at all.
If you're critique is that there are other conjunctions that also mean "because," then you have to split them apart further.
>ので
A combination of の (nominalizing particle) and で (conjunctive form of the copula), therefore use it when giving explanation via independent clauses
>電車が遅れたので、遅刻しました (The train was late, THEREFORE I was late)
>から
This is a particle that traditionally means "from" or "since." It indicates a starting point , so it's used for stating a logical order. Jisho also points out that when using it as a conjunction, it follows a verb, i-adjective, or だ after a noun or na-adjective:
>雨だから出かけない (since it is raining, I won't go out)
>寒いから、窓を閉めて (since it's cold, close the window)

It's really that simple.

That's not how I would do it personally. I like this suggestion of "taking turns" >>750737686 but if I was starting today I'd actually do 3 for 3, assuming it's a standard 20 minutes of anime. After Anki, three episodes raw, then three episodes subbed. Repeat the cycle until you get bored for the day, or until you run out of time. This is better because it means you have more time to assimilate everything about the words you are just learning today.

I’m learning Italian and there are some very similar inflections, which of course is to be expected. Any Romance language is most derivative of Latin. Especially the vulgar Italian of the Middle Ages.
Take this verse from the ninth canto of Inferno I love for its imagery, for example, and try to vocalise it:
>Dentro li ‘ntrammo sanz’alcuna guerra;
>e io, ch’avea di riguardar disio
>la condizion che tal fortezza serra

>com’io fui dentro, l’occhio intorno invio
>e veggio ad ogne man grande campagna
>piena di duolo e di tormento rio

This is sort of an excuse for me to post Dante despite it belonging on /lit/. But there is no other way to read him I believe. No translation comes close to his beauty in terza rima. If one is trying to capture his work semantically, they miss out on the artistry. And if they focus too much on the syntax, they miss the meaning. That archaic Italian is so much more flexible than that of contemporary English, as is with most things syntactically Latin. Milton does well with creating a Latinate structure, but using English to construct his poem. Definitely check out Paradife Loft and Paradife Regained if you want a sort of “in-between” of Latin and English.
>>
>>750739043
You sound like a smart cookie. I don't like /lit/ because I'm a zoomer and I need flashy lights and color and stuff but I always respect you guys. Good luck with Italian.
>>
>>750738293
>で (conjunctive form of the copula)
afaik that で isn't だ(助動詞). i.e. the sentence is not A AND B
In that case で(格助詞) explains a reason, so the sentence is closer to because A, B or A, so B
And you haven't answered the question on why use だけに instead of ので or から, claude-kun
>>
>>750739151
Saying /lit/ reads is like saying /v/ plays videogames
>>
>>750739157
They share the same etymology actually. で is a contraction of にて, which is both the conjunctive form of だ and also the particle で. You can think of ので as a conjunctive way of saying のだ. Because you've introduced a subordinating clause with it, it implies that said clause is the reason for the main clause that follows: "It is A, and (thus) B." The て particle actually works the same way by itself. It can be both a coordinating AND subordinating conjunction.
Anyway, you can apply the same logic from my first post to だけに and see that だけ means "only" or "no more than (that)," so it follows that when paired with the に particle, you're claiming that the reason for something being the case is no more than what you just said.
>claude-kun
Nope, just years of study.
>>
>>750737686
>>750738506
Both bad suggestions
There are good reasons why you need to be listening raw from day 1
The more obvious answer that you have both overlooked is watch the anime raw start to finish then take a break by doing a few other series then read the manga at a later time
The sheer gains you get from compounded reading are incredible
>>
>>750739646
>Nope, just years of study.
Do you mean traditional study, or immersion? I'm always curious to see how "traditional" learners do compare to immerse learners these days.
>>
>>750739820

>>
>>750739868

>>
>>750739151
Yeah like the other guy said, /lit/ doesn’t really read as much as you’d think. The most frequently bumped thread the other week was a malfoid one, so they’re not much different from here. But thank you for the compliment, though I’d disagree. I’m just autistic and have to force myself to read literature in its original language (if it’s revered for its prose/poetry) but yeah. He also uses certain words that look the same but have completely different meanings because of the vernacular of that time which is similar to Latin.
Mezzo = “med-so” = middle, midway
Mezzo = “met-so” = withered, overripe (derived from the Latin “mitius” meaning “ soft”)
So yeah, it counts as another halfway point. Okay I’m done sperging now. Thanks for listening.
>>
>>750739980
Probably 4-6 hours daily, even to this day. When I started it was variable, since I would get stuck trying to understand certain grammatical concepts, and that would make me go on wild goose chases trying to figure out what I was looking at.

Learning a language for women is the most retardo shit you can do. The first question when you start speaking her language will be
>which one of your whores taught you that?
And there is no right answer. She won't believe that you learned it by yourself and she wouldn't find it cute.

Women have been socialized to feel insulted when a man have a prior interest in their culture. For a lot of women, their heritage is their entire personality so if you already know it then have nothing to talk about. This insecurity will hang over the relationship and most likely be what ends it. Her therapist or a fat jealous friend will convince her that you're racist and only learned the language to manipulate her.

冤罪 is so common it's in fucking Pretty Cure. Japanese learners seriously don't know jack shit. They bump into one word that they don't know and instantly classify it as some obscure shit no one actually uses. Meanwhile, it appears in shows your imouto would be watching. The only thing JP LARPers prove by trying to pretend anything is rare or uncommon is that they aren't even doing the bare minimum when it comes to immersion. You literally can't NOT run into all kinds of words if you're enjoying Japanese shit.

Everything is common. Pretending that words and grammar are "hard" or "rare" is just a cope to make retards feel better about themselves, and to feel like they have a reason rather than excuse for not knowing stuff that the average Japanese person would know if you asked them. Just go play Blue Reflection or something instead of going against the vision of the developer

idk jap learners have a lot of weird hangups about which media is "pure" or not. They think translated media is somehow tainted with Western thought, as if Japan hasn't already been colonized for more than half a century.
>>
>>750752753
The point of learning JP is to play games the way developers intended. When you do your first playthrough of a game that wasn't designed with a JP first mindset, you may still be working on your japanese but you're sabotaging your experience.
>>
>>750752894
You're doing more harm to your learning if you're wasting time playing things in English. Besides, Japs don't have much command over the English language. They can "intend" for something to be a certain way in English all they want, but, at the end of the day, they're still relying on translators to communicate their ideas.

Then again in this case it does apply as crapcom slop is westoid goyslop, so you're right in this particular case.
Same with sega and SE goyslop, nominally also FROMslop but frankly FROMslop "lore" and plots are literal wiki filler that doesn't matter.

Japanese is one of the most tainted culture on earth desu.
Half of their words are Chinese
Mindraped since Meiji era when they started trying to emulate western countries
Colonized by mutts, with nation wide writing reforms ensuing their defeat (to dumb down the language), progressively setting older and newer generation apart as school programs drastically changed
They're now wearing western clothing, some of their most famous stories are actually riddled with western symbolism, references to western philosophy and mythology.
I guess this truly is the fate of bugmen, you can hijack the queen bee and they'll all change their programming at once

To be fair, they fought it for a long time. They would murder Christians, foreigners, and anyone else using arcane torture methods, just to make a point to the natives. It was only natural that they would succumb to the dominant force. If anything, they were given too much freedom after WWI.

>They think translated media is somehow tainted with Western thought
It objectively is, because English itself is a tainted language molded by Western thought. One common example: people/creatures with indiscriminate gender. Japanese has no problem dancing around this, but English NEEDS pronouns, so the character becomes a "they/them" (which is especially awkward when the character is revealed to be a girl in the sequel, lmao).

But worse than all that is the fact that English is painfully simple. The overwhelming majority of English speakers are ESLs who know only the bare minimum necessary to get by, and through decades of interacting with these ESLs, native English speakers have also forgotten how to write anything above an ESL reading level.

I know every individual character but every new compound is still a dead stop.
未練、引き払う、突っ込む、まける (for bargaining), and let's not get started on kana only words.
Whenever a sentence goes longer than like 15 words I need to write it down and read it three times.

It feels weird because if I know the words, I potentially can go quite fast, but when either new words or structures I don't grasp instinctually show up it piledrives me on the spot. And there's so much fucking vocabulary and compound verbs, it never seems to end.

Don't get mad or frustrated. Just keep immersing. Remember that while learning new shit is important, you need thousands of exposures to the things you feel you already know, too. It might not feel like it's doing you much good, but the repetitions of the most common stuff you know makes them second-nature over time, freeing up your mind to worry about unfamiliar shit and dedicate more brain cycles to it.

People like to talk about needing [number] of hours or [number] of cards, yet it's the shit that's quietly happening in the background while you READ MORE AND LISTEN that is actually powering you up the most. The less brainpower you have to devote to deciphering what you read or heard, the more meaning you extract from everything you see.

It's normal. You get used to colloquialisms.
Compound verbs suck dick 踏み躙る, 取り上げる, こみ上げる, 見舞う, こびりつける, 引き上げる, 差し支える, 飛び降りる, 薙ぎ倒す, 打ち負かす, 見開く, etc. Sometimes you can spot patterns, like with phrasal verbs in English (e.g. 言い出す, 話し出す, 飛び出す, 降り出す (begin to...)... 放り出す, 差し出す, 溢れ出す(溢れ出る?), 抜き出す, 思い出す)
As for the sentence thing, you haven't gotten used to filtering out words. Pronouns are your friend, and so is ellipsis (e.g. give a book to John requires more effort to read than give something to someone)
