Combine this with increased paranoia due to Internet amplifying crime stories and how you already had parents go from not watching, to rolling by, to following the children to the doorstep. Combine this with it becoming more of an annual dress up day that works better at a party. Combine this with trunk or treats arising to solve some of the issues parents and children started to have. It honestly hasn't surprised me that Halloween was barely a thing this year, even a lot of the tie in stuff coming in late and fading quickly. The holiday had its meaning removed and it created a huge vacuum that consumed everything else. Eventually what remains will just be children dressing up and receiving candy, and people decorating their houses for fall, which can happen without the holiday. Modern society can't have something as genuine as children dressing up and going around plundering houses past bedtime for one night of the year. I remember being a kid and seeing a house with some party going on and a guy dressed as Pyramid Head and I knew it was the beginning of the end.
