Is one of the greatest tragedies in world history and may be responsible for the broken timeline we are in
>>
Nintendo knew what would become of bongland a few years later
>>
Even if Rare stayed working with Nintendo, people would still bitch because Rare fucking LOVED gimmicks. They would've been all in on waggling, motion plus, DS connectivity, you name it. For better or worse.
>>
FACTS
>Rare missed several deadlines
>Their then-recent games were underperforming
>Their decline in output isn't tied to Microsoft, it's tied to increased development costs something even Nintendo has acknowledged for them
>Banjo-Threeie was never real, the team behind Kazooie was working on Grabbed by the Ghoulies
>There was no mass walk out because of the buyout, at most the Goldeneye devs left to form Free Radical and they were already leaving before Microsoft came along anyways
>Microsoft didn't buy Rare for Donkey Kong, it was one suit from Microsoft who wasn't part of the agreement, arrived at Rare, and got confused by all the Donkey Kong merchandise around the office
>Rare's popular and (co-)owned characters likely would've missed out on Brawl anyways. Banjo-Threeie wasn't real, Snake couldn't bring guns so why would Joanna Dark, Conker and Killer Instinct didn't get released in Japan, etc

Hell, we saw this with the Diddy Kong Racing remake on DS
>>
Nintendo got the best of Rare and dropped them when they were tapped. Power play.

Rare's problem was that the industry changed
Their best output came out when game development was still cheap enough to have small teams work on the then-considered cutting edge works.
A lot of Rare's more controversial decisions make so much more sense when you look at their history.
>Rare not wanting to make sequels?
They stopped making Battletoads when the partnership with Nintendo started
Banjo-Threeie was never on the table either
With game development becoming harder and more expensive the studio chose to focus on making new things rather than reiterate on their past
>Rare choosing to do Kinect games?
They've always been interested in new hardware
Banjo Pilot was gonna use GBA tilt controls and they shoehorned as many gimmicks as they could in the Diddy Kong Racing DS remake
Had they stuck with Nintendo they would've done all sorts of things with the Wii Remote, Wii U Game Pad, 3DS' gyro controls, etc
>Dinosaur Planet to Star Fox Adventures
Wasn't something forced upon them
Rare has always compromised if it meant stronger sales
Pro Am 64 to Diddy Kong Racing, Twelve Tales to Conker's Bad Fur Day (admittedly this one might have backfired but the team said Twelve Tales simply wasn't a good game), Kameo's changes done to be more appealing to the more defined Xbox crowd, etc
>Everwild entering development hell
Look at Project Dream to Banjo-Kazooie
Look at Twelve Tales to Bad Fur Day
Look at Pro Am 64 to Diddy Kong Racing
Look at Dinosaur Planet to Star Fox Adventures
Look at Kameo's entire development history
Everwild's troubled development is CONSISTENT with Rare's history, the difference is that making drastic changes during development isn't as lenient as it once was.
It's the same problem that fell onto Donkey Kong Racing to Sabreman Stampede when the change in direction didn't pan out because while the animal riding was interesting, they couldn't figure out what do with it in time.

Banjo-Tooie, DK64, and Grabbed by The Ghoulies all fucking sucked. This is why Nintendo let them go and nothing of value was lost.
>>
So what do you think post-Asha/post-Activision move Rare is gonna be like?
Nothing but Sea of Thieves (so nothing really changes)?
You think they'll ever rebrand or be assimilated into another studio?
>>
>>750747908
I dunno I think even with DKC3 you could tell they were starting to run out of steam and by the Gamecube era they were all out of gas.

>people would bitch
so?

>>750748424
I liked BT and DK64, though I get the pushback against them.

I do think Nintendo should have bought them but I see why they didn't.
>>
>>750747908
They knew RARE were done.
They made the right move palming them off on to microsoft.
Nobody gives a shit about yapping animal platform games. Even in the 90s. People were sick to death of them.
>>
>>750749350
*Rare were to blame for the bad reputation Nintendo had in the late 90s.
The n64 was known as "The kiddie system" amongst gamers and even normies.
>>
>>750749384
Goldeneye?
>>
>>750748248
RARE still made better games than nintendo
>>
>>750748248
>Their then-recent games were underperforming
Sales or quality?
Star Fox Adventures was mediocre but that game got wrangled by various people including Miyamoto.
Before that they released:
Conker - A great N64 classic.
Banjo-Tooie - A very solid game although personally I don't find it as good as B-K
Mickey's Speedway - A game from the B team
Perfect Dark - One of the best N64 games
Rare was still putting out classic titles.

>Banjo-Tooie
>DK64
>fucking sucked
Revisionism. They were well received at the time
>>
>>750749907
Clearly sales
>>
>>750747908
The money they made from their share being sold helped them during when the Gamecube flopped. Also Rare games weren't as good during the Xbox era. Only the Viva Pinanta games were good but Nintendo already had Animal Crossing anyways.
>>
>>750748550
Their IP's will likely be outsourced to devs to make a new Banjo game and maybe Perfect Dark.

>Their IP's will likely be outsourced to devs to make a new Banjo game and maybe Perfect Dark.
I doubt it
Asha's not interested in niche IPs
>>
>>750749595
Debatable for home consoles
Not so much for handhelds
Rare's handheld selection is mostly shovelware
Even their non-licensed stuff
>>
>>750747908
You retards always seem to forget that:
>Jewtendo in 2001 didn't have Wii nor Switch money yet
>they did attempt to acquire Rare
>but got outbid by M$ for $375 million
>this is a Rare, circa 2002 with majority of the key talent already gone (Free Radical)
>Star Fox Adventures was viewed as mid
Yes, the IPs would've been a nice feather under Jewtendo's cap, but you were never going to get another Banjo-Kazooie, DKR, or especially Perfect Dark because the talent literally wasn't there anymore.

>tendie idiots actually believe this
