The only reason gyro is worse than mouse is that it's still attached to slow stick aiming. If you use a trackpad or flickstick, it's as good as mouse.

Even now gyro is only barely starting to become popular enough that you can expect it to be in most games and even then it's not always a good implementation. There's no reason to put in the effort to learn an input method that the next fotm game might not even support when your career depends on you playing that game well. Especially when learning it would take away effort from getting better at using mouse. Besides, a lot of competitive gamers are using sticks now because aim assist is too broken in newer games. Doesn't mean sticks are better.
With all that said, take a look at the entire splatoon competitive scene.

>>750882290
Why would you play anything on a modern first party controller?
They're all budget-slashed, arrested development trash and aren't good at anything.
The fact that Sony has a VR controller, an actual post-2010 controller rather than the 90s slop being peddled by Xbox or the mid 00s controllers that Nintendo is still pushing, and hasn't made that controller into its primary input device is just laughable.

I think this is probably an issue with xinput. In someways xinput was great because it allowed easy plug and play of controllers when it used to be a real pain the in ass to get a controller to work for a game. But the spec defines 4 face buttons and so I think everyone is just stuck with that. Not sure how much effort it would take to extend it. It's definitely a shame that the 6 face button controller scheme lost.

>>
>>750884803
Sorry, but you need the mouse and a dense input device (not necessarily keyboard) for more varied verb/noun gameplay.
Console shooters are shit, because you can't aim at anything without heavyhanded assistance (which forces games to oversimplify the things you can interact with by aiming at them down to just enemies) and you only have 2 buttons that aren't being being blocked by the mandatory ADS (need a walk button for your analog camera) and shoot button because bumpers and triggers are the only buttons that most controllers have that don't compete with the thumbsticks.
Consoleslop is stagnating because games need to set themselves apart based on the functionality of what is often just a single context sensitive button.

I know. That's why I'm arguing in favor of gyro and trackpads. If they were standard on controllers, controllers would be comparable to mouse and keyboard so games wouldn't have to be simplified for them. Not only does gyro not harm you, it would actually actively benefit you even if you never touch a controller.

Drift is an inherent flaw of potentiometers. The resistive strip gets worn with friction from use which leads to drifting. Obviously using it like a retarded caveman will cause more wear and make it happen faster, but even if you're gentle, it's something that will inevitably happen given enough time.

No, this is. Are you aware of the difference between analog and 360°? There's a reason I mentioned both, it's because they mean different things. If you read the next sentence, you'd see I know you can turn the camera to change direction.
>>

Dog I had a Nintendo switch 1 for like 5 years and used it in dock mode for hundreds of hours. I put a total of about 5-10 hours into Breath of the Wild and this year and got stick drift on a Joycon. I assume if dust/debris gets into the stick and it's not using magnets like TMR then it's game over

It's not great for movement when you have to control the camera at the same time, so mouse and analog stick just becomes kind of pointless.
>>750897709
>The mouse doesn't help you with analog movement at all.
It lets you smoothly walk wherever you want, it definitely helps with analog movement. If you want to walk slower, then some games use the scrollwheel to adjust movement speed, but even analog stick controller games usually have run buttons.
>And you don't always want to use the camera to turn.

Halo didn't ruin shooters, every dev trying to make their game Halo for the next 15 years did. Two weapon limit, regen health, sticky aim, 70 fov, crouch-speed movement, the whole plague package. The controller was just the delivery mechanism.

halo introducing auto-aim to first person shooters to make them playable on consoles is what ruined first person shooters anon. don't be dense. Were other shooters supposed to just not have auto-aim?
>>
>>750898120
The controller was the limiting factor that required almost all of those changes.
The poor button economy, the inability to really look or move accurately and the split-brain movement all derive from the controller.
>>
>>750898117
>It lets you smoothly walk wherever you want, it definitely helps with analog movement
It helps with 360° movement. But it's still digital movement since you only have 2 speeds, still or moving.
>If you want to walk slower, then some games use the scrollwheel to adjust movement speed
That's fair, but it's not as convenient or intuitive as just pushing the stick by the amount of speed you want.
>This is a thread about shooters, why wouldn't you use the camera to turn?
It's especially relevant in shooters. You might need to keep your aim on a specific target but also be able to move in a precise direction that's between the 8 available on keyboard.

yes, something that literally never happens is a good argument for sticks.
>>
>>750898117
the thing is, we never tried to see if it's not great for movement when you have to control the camera at the same time. games are hardcoded to use either kb+m or controller, with no inbetween. the moment any game recognizes a slight tilt of an analog stick, kb+m turns off to swap to controller support. we cant even take that first step to test the waters.

>That's fair, but it's not as convenient or intuitive as just pushing the stick by the amount of speed you want.
You glanced over the fact that most shooters have run buttons, the analog thumbstick just doesn't have the fidelity to enable the full range of speed regardless, so it's not really a significant advantage since you're still giving up the ability to instantly switch from one button input to another in exchange for what is mostly a gimmick.
>It's especially relevant in shooters. You might need to keep your aim on a specific target but also be able to move in a precise direction that's between the 8 available on keyboard.
Most shooters designed for analog sticks are designed so that the player doesn't really use both analog sticks together with any significant coordination anyway, so this is a usecase that is mostly a hypothetical ideal that doesn't happen without heavy aim assist.
>>750898826
This isn't a universal limitation and there's still really no reason to do it. You've got two brain hemisperes controlling each hand and coordinating heavily between them in order to imagine how someone who isn't you will move is inefficient, just let one hemisphere decide where to go otherwise the game will need assist features just to make it possible for the average plebeian who hasn't trained the fine art of rubbing his stomach and patting his head at the same time.
>>
Analog movement has absolutely no value outside of 3D platformers that have locked cameras.

>stand on thin walkway
>enemy across the gap at an angle that forces you to choose between keeping your aim on him or walking off
Even if that's not a common occurrence, it's precisely because WASD movement is limiting. Devs can't design maps with areas like that because it would only work with 360° movement independent of the camera.
If mouse adopted stick movement and gyro became standard, it would allow devs to design more interesting maps that require more precise movement because they now have a better input method available.
I don't get how someone who prefers mouse can possibly defend WASD when a stick is simply better for movement in the exact same way a mouse is better than a stick for aiming.
>>750899214
>most shooters have run buttons, the analog thumbstick just doesn't have the fidelity to enable the full range of speed regardless
True, but there's still enough precision for a good 4 speeds. That's more than would be intuitive on a keyboard.
>since you're still giving up the ability to instantly switch from one button input to another
That's admittedly true but a stick really doesn't take much more time to switch.
>Most shooters designed for analog sticks are designed so that the player doesn't really use both analog sticks together with any significant coordination anyway
That's a bad thing too and ideally wouldn't be the case. Ideally, people would use gyro+trackpads or a mouse with a stick for movement and games could be designed with that in mind.

I see, you're a child retard who can't cope with being entirely wrong on a topic because they were underaged banned when they came out.
. XInput and Direct Input are both Microsoft. Direct Input was released along side Direct Sound and DirectX. XInput was released alongside their dogshit cosolified Xbox game libraries for Games for Windows Live on Vista

Objectively wrong. 2 fingers on keys can change direction faster and more accurately than analog.
I'm still yet to see a single example of analog movement having ANY value and it speaks volumes my posts on it are being ignored.
PCKINGS won again.
>>
It objectively feels better to use for movement than WASD, half setup with analog controller/mouse might be ideal at least for me

You mean objectively feels worse for movement.
Also, you'd be pained to know that a half setup doesn't work for 90% of games. Controller input locks KBM in most games. The other 10% thay do work constantly flashes back and forth the onscreen prompts. Game devs are fucking retarded.

ackshually they are because analog is so shit that the auto-aim has to insanely over compensate to make it even comparable to kb+m which leads to tons of means to exploit the autoaim to be superior to kb+m

name two games that make common use of your extreme (literal) edge-case scenario.

you can tell the person that made this has never held or shot a gun in real life but made an entire copecomic to make controllers seem better than mkb
