My wife is a cuck queen, and I was into a girl with a husband, so I was reading The End of the Affair by Graham Greene. It's interesting at how accurate the feelings are in that book. It's a level of obsession I could never express. I started reading Letters to Milena by Kafka also. This is the perfect book for a drama fan. It's probably the most personal thing I've ever read.

I wanted to reread A Series of Unfortunate Events, but I can't imagine rereading a kids book series would do anything for me.

I want to read more Russian literature after getting with a Russian woman.

I've been reading Dungeon Crawler Carl and Lord of the Mysteries.
1 is a flavor of the month series that is getting a lot of attention again because it had another book in its series release. Very modern, very ridiculous, very entertaining.
The other is a fairly serious Chinese web-novel that I picked up on recommendation while a Russian web-novel I like stacks up some extra chapters for me to binge at a later date. The first chapter was so horrendous I dropped it instantly, but I picked it back up later cause I was told it gets better (and it did, just 1 chapter later).

>>750895479
LotM is quite fun. It suffers from being a webnovel at times but I appreciate how well it's written and (for the most part) planned out. It reminds me a bit of Trash of the Count's Family in terms of quality.

I know western fiction is in a rut right now, but is there anything you've read that doesn't feel toothless? Every book I've tried either has horrible pacing and no actual stakes. Like they are scared to write something where something bad plausibly happens to their characters without it feeling forced.
>>
>>750895587
>After the obnoxious cat made its 4th feet joke, I just closed the book
Don't worry, the feet jokes don't stop.
Later on, there's also a black chick (with a crab for a lower body) that has tits about as big as a person each.
It's absolutely absurd beyond measure, but ties it all together in a way that I enjoy.

I like it but there is this kind of political wish fulfillment fantasy in it where there exists individuals that represent an entire ideology, sub culture, etc and that’s a writing device I’ve never been a fan of. The next book I’m going to buy is DiscWorld and I’m also picking up Justine by De Sade.

>>750894621
The Altered Carbon trilogy that no one's fully read past the famous (and best) first book and then his fantasy trilogy after. The fantasy trilogy features copious amounts of gay sex and horrible people suffering. It's really just set piece after set piece strung together of horrible things happening and grimdark shit popular of that 2010's era. It also directly continues off of the scifi stuff. It's really cynical and all of the advanced tech turns into the magic featured in the fantasy which is fun to follow with hints and clues. It's mild background horror finding out how far in the future the series gets for things to turn out like this. The actual plot is ass though, but it's barely about that. It's self aware of the major plot being ass and the MC wanting nothing to do with it, but that doesn't help. Like always the barbarian is the best chad in the entire series. 6 books all having a brooding edgy angsty mood sure is a trip.

I've been listening to Trader's Tales from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper by Nathan Lowell
The author put out the whole series as an audiobook accessible from any podcast app.
Optimistic and competent characters, nothing too high brow but it's good enough and reminds me of what could have been if society actually followed and respected its rules instead of individuals opportunistically breaking them for personal gain.
Its about an 18years old guy signing up for a spaceship service as a steward because he got btfod by lawyers and lost his home on a corporate owned planet after his mothers death. Characters are generally competent and advancement is relatively easy, so he does. And earns money.

Muh Trauma has become the gayest cliche in storytelling for the last 15 years. Every single indie horror darling pile of shit movie is just muh trauma manifest into some gay monster. I was just reading the memoirs of Sepp Allerberger and he was dodging bullets whilst watching men get fucking ground up underneath the tracks of tanks and there isn't 1 paragraph doing the "muh trauma" dump. So refreshing to not have to listen to that shit.

Currently reading Fahrenheit 451 and some moments hit pretty hard. It's fascinating to see how different dystopian stories present a variety of mankind's tendencies of self-destruction.
Previously did The Fortress of the Pearl. I love how older fantasy stories create a sense of vastness and mystery, an illusion that there's a whole wide world out there and the character you follow is hardly above an average schmuck, whereas modern game stories seem to rigidly revolve around the player while the rest of the world is frozen in place. I guess it kinda comes with the format, but also think that there's a lot of untapped potential in that direction.

I read it last month. Genuinely amazing to me how concise sci fi writers used to be
We had some amazing world building and character drama that still had action moments with their big escape at the end and it's all kept at under 300 pages and while part of a thematic series set in the same universe it's entirely self contained and the characters and planet don't come up again elsewhere so you can stop and leave right when you're done.
Writers were a different breed back then

It's hard but it's not the hardest book ever. There's a lot more going on than Homer parallels, those have more to do with the chapter structures than the plot or characters. A lot of people say the book opens up around chapter 4.

I've been rereading Jack Vance. Right now, the Demon Princes books. The detective story in the foreground is good but I also like the background of the setting. Vance will drop premises for entire novels in a single line while Gersen is running around counterfeiting money or whatever. The Cadwal series is also especially good for that.

Yes, it's one of my favorite books ever. The part I most remember is when Estraven breaks Genly out of the prison camp and they travel back to Karhide as fugitives. Some really beautiful descriptions of the landscape and how they coped with the harsh environment. It's a shame what happened to Le Guin later in her career; Winter's King was not nearly as good. Everything in Earthsea after The Farthest Shore is just awful feminist didacticism

Spent the last few months reading ASOIAF and I had to drop it for now at A Feast For Crows, it feels like a major drop in quality. The first 3 books were decent and the way it is written makes it entertaining but I feel like the style it is told in makes it hard for the books to stand alone. Also it really irked me that most of the battles in the first 2 books were from tyrion's perspective fighting, which I found to be implausible and it really made him feel like a gary stu. I liked Second Apocalypse a lot better despite some issues I have with it.

Severian is kind of a prick at first. You have to remember that he's a snotnosed teenager in the early sections, he's like 17 and part of the story is watching him get less like that.

forgive me i've been reading OP MC popcorn web novels
>MC Simon is the bastard son of a seemingly unbeatable evil overlord who conquered the continent
>suddenly Dad is mysteriously assassinated and Simon inherits the power of the Crimson Throne
>turns out the secret to his unbeatableness was time travel. the "curse" of the crimson throne is that whoever inherits it will live out their reign until death exactly 100 times going back to the beginning each time, and then it traps their soul forever
>now Simon has 100 tries to dodge the conspiracy that killed the previous overlord, stop the upcoming apocalypse, keep the empire from collapsing into civil war, and avoid the machinations of THE ELVES
it's pretty fun

Lately I've been reading the Xeelee Omnibus and the Mushoku Tensei manga. Shit's so cash. I sort of went into the Xeelee book expecting a lot of misery porn and powerlevelfaggotry, but it's mostly just been stories about relatable people surviving a ton of neat, wacky sci-fi bullshit thrown their way. I look forward to getting the other books.

I am currently reading Book of the new sun, I usually read a chapter once every other day before sleeping. The way Severian finds out a cute brown petite little sister coded tomboy girl companion who is also kinda crazy is fun, specially all the adventures they get into from the getgo. The part where they visit a lake garden that's full into dark fantasy aesthetic was great and the guy got a cute blonde softspoken girl to join him too made me wish I was him, the lucky bastard is now strooling around the city with two beautiful gals! Hope nothing happens to my hero and his upcoming duel ends up well.

Honestly, from what I remember I disliked Luthar's conclusion the most. I understand that all the development in the 2nd book was supposed to be "thrown away" to make room for some of the twists and he is supposed to mostly be a chained loser by the end but it still didn't sit right with me, I genuinely preferred West as character even though he was cockblocked a lot. I agree, Terez was annoying.

assuming you've never read anything by gaddis:
this novel is cynical and bitter and full of hatred. this criticism was (unfairly) levied against his earlier work but here i see where the critics are coming to this conclusion. the novel (at least the first half) consists largely of dialogue between a miserable and wretched veteran husband wishing to elevate his station and his wife who cannot match his pace or desire and bears the brunt of his ire. the novel is autumnal both in setting (leaves decaying, heavy sunsets) and tone - everything is falling apart. the people are wicked or foolish or both and one desires if there's anything they desire outside of power. nonetheless gaddis has such a wondrous ear that it's hard to not read it

Reading Crime and Punishment, most of the way through it.

Pretty great so far, but Dostoevsky pisses me the fuck off with his retardedly long monologues his characters do. I would suck dick for just a few dialogues between two characters that doesn't boil down to one character ranting for 3 whole pages while the other character occasionally interjects with one single sentence that adds nothing to the ""conversation"".

I read through the first novel of Twelve Kingdoms in Japanese to try and test myself a bit instead of playing my usual JRPG slop. Quite the struggle especially with all the Chinese mythological inspirations in it but I managed. Decently fun story but it kind of abruptly ends at what feels like it ought to be the two-thirds mark.
I tried reading the second novel in the series but ran aground near the end because it isn't about Youko and it's a whole lot of absolutely nothing happening, just a bunch of palace attendant women sitting around drinking tea more or less.

I stopped reading, when my favorite fantasy author went woke. I always feared that would happen, because he had a blog, where he posted about how he played games like Fallout: New Vegas and later all of the different modern tv shows he watched.

We really need to lock writers just in some kind of underground world, where they get everything they could possibly need, but are completely divorced from current media trends. He was corrupted and while every character he used to write had an interesting quirk like Logan Ninefingers, a Barbarian from the North, who has a Berserker split personality or Glokta (the Goat), who is a tortured wreck of a person, who found new purpose in the King's Inquisition and now he is the one applying what was done to him. These were interesting characters. He always started out with a funny quirk, but through the stories he wrote the characters became much deeper.

But now he is just adding these girlboss characters, who are in these weird lesbian relationships, have no flaws, have literally superhuman strength, rent out an entire brothel, including all of the men, because they are that badass. Oh, but also the Industrial Revolution is now kicking off in our fantasy world and there are refugees everywhere and they are being discriminated against. Like what the fuck.

I've been reading more than ever before lately. I hate a lot of contemporary fiction but when you find a panel or a prize with taste that matches yours, then finding good new books isn't so bad. Especially if you ditch genre fiction and stick with historical/philosophical/psychological literature, which cuts out all the bloated lore and gets right to the meat of things.
Read a good deal of actual history and philosophy this year too. But mostly read a bunch of classic novels/poetry since I'm fucking fed up with horror/sci fi/fantasy becoming infested with predictable tropes. One good paragraph by Faulkner, Tolstoy or Morrison contains more insight than some entire books, especially mass-produced self help junk or infantilizing corny adventure stories with the same fucking plot arcs and morals over and over.

I like to read japanese light novels. Most of them are trashy I admit, but I like how simple they write. They don't add all this fluff like most English authors. I hated reading growing up because the introductions were like literally pages of describing the breeze through the trees and light breaking yonder and shit. What really ticks me off is when human Jap->Eng translators will ruin a light novel by adding fluff on purpose. Literally in the preface they will explain "we added a bunch of descriptive paragraphs all over the place because we felt the original was too dull." Like fuck off, I want to know how the plot progresses, not what color underwear the protag is wearing.

Enjoyed it, especially the sequence that starts a little after halfway through which is 100+ pages of payoff after payoff, but the rest of it after that was a bit of a letdown, don't think things had quite enough time to congeal, felt a bit sloppy. Ah a fellow JP reader?
>I'm enjoying them a lot
They're fun reads, aren't they? Nisio really likes to play around with meta aspects like word positioning and spelling. The broader story is also more cohesive because you're reading them in release order instead of anime order.
I know I'm in the minority saying this but I can't stand the adaptation - and I watched them first. I think Shaft's overall visual representation never leaves the realm of distracting, meaningless, awkward, and simply bizarre. That's of course ignoring the various cut content like you mentioned.

I finished 傾物語 a couple days ago. Was probably the best volume yet. Here are some thrilling excerpts that I took the time to record:

heh, excellent selections. I haven't been saving individual excerpts but I do mine while reading, have a number of colorful flashcards. e.g.:
標語 ー わたしのクラスでは、『ロリコンに優しく』が今月の標語ですから

>Nisio really likes to play around with meta aspects like word positioning and spelling
I catch at least some of those but can't help but feel that I'm overlooking some others - before starting gatari I had only read a bunch of graded readers and some less challenging LNs. Though I don't think it's quite as bad as I initially thought it would be, especially given how many he explains in-text.

Find your dislike of the adaptation curious - to me the visuals were a perfect accompaniment, punchy, light-hearted, mildly stimulating but not so much so as to be a distraction from the dialogue. And that's leaving out all the fanservice. Different strokes I suppose

I've been trying so hard to get back into reading and just half way through I get so critical of it and drop it.
Which isn't inherently bad, I learned years ago not much is gained trudging through bad books.
But fuck me has this put me in a rut of wanting to read, nothing like what I'm imaging, trying to write, fuck I can't write I need more books to learn how to write, this book looks interesting, yeah I'm done.
>>
>>750921000
As far as LNs go I suppose they're more involved reads but yeah, they're definitely not difficult to understand enough to appreciate.

Here's another random pun I thought was the absolute height of literature:

I’ve been thinking of writing my novel. It’s about a young man in a fictional south-east Asian country in the early 1900’s who is returning home after studying abroad for 10 years after his father dies and he has to take over the estate. His father was a wealthy man and a minor noble and had a harem of concubines. One of them was a girl given to his father as a gift when she was just 14. Because of their close age at the time, the MC and the girl quickly became very good friend and he had a sort of crush on her but he started to resent her and his father when he hid inside a close and watched his father have sex with her. Shortly afterwards he was sent away to study in the west. Now he’s back and struggling to reconcile his feelings for her as he inherits his father’s properties, and by extension, his harem and she is now his. A tale of sexuality and childhood trauma with some political intrigue in the background as we also follow the concubines and how their hierarchy is threatened as their new “owner” arrives. Please rate.

That's funny because Phantom Menace is my favorite of the three. The sound design in it is like a gift from god, and I'm a big SFX nerd. Also it gave us Maul and Duel of the Fates as well.
Revenge of the Sith is like The Room to me. It's laughably bad, but it has enough memorable lines and moments to make it fun to rewatch.
Attack of the Clones is really the only one I can't stand. I hate pretty much everything about that movie, with the exception of the seismic charge. I would genuinely rather watch any of the sequels than Clones.

Read Silver John. It's wild to see some genuine Americana used in writing
The novels are long out of print sadly but the short stories have been collected and republished recently so you can still snap those up.
If you ever wanted to see a man who in the artists vision is Johnny Cash as a Vietnam veteran rambling around Appalachia dealing with haints, demons, ghosts, and other beings of folklore a lot of current shit has tried to bite off of (looking at you Old Gods of Appalachia) give it a gander. Halloween has passed but November is still a dreary month fitting for some supernatural fiction

Has anyone read Dungeon Crawler Carl? I do not understand how this slop became so popular, but I see it everywhere. Can't argue about the sound and music, Duel of the Fates was really good. There are flaws in all of them, including RotS but the first one is dragged by young Anakin's acting and everything involving the gungans feels like a forced kind of silliness. Like Lucas was telling himself "this will sell so many toys, make them more ridiculous, make the big fat one shake his lips and spit everywhere, make the tall lanky one talk like a retard, more toys to sell!".

AotC is connective tissue but if prequel movies have to exist I think it would've been better to just start it there and add an extra in-between movie, adult Anakin all the way through, set up some backstory commentary along the way to explain why Shmi is in a sand-people rape camp. It loses Qui-Gon and Maul, which is the only really bad loss with the change, though Maul being brought back over and over later on is silly anyway.

The Devils was the book that convinced me that the first law was a fluke.
Nothing in The Devils is interesting because of how paint by numbers it is. It's Suicide Squad with classic monsters from the plot, to the dialogue, to the inter team dynamics and it's all so predictable.
Oh the team is split up and find themselves on opposite sides of a minor conflict. Oh wait it's a bitter divorce. Oh wait it's solved by the two of them banging.

The Shattered Sea he wrote seems like it's the exact same story just Suicide Squad with vikings instead.
Joe American Eagle got stumbled his way into three good books and that's it.

It has a prequel which tells the raven knight's story in the Daughter's War. It's okay at best but absolutely doesn't scratch the itch that Black Tongue left me with in wanting to see more of the world. And the protagonist narration isn't nearly as gripping even if it's infinitely more serious.
Hell the best part of the book is the opening four chapters about the juggernaut and doesn't come close to that high until maybe the discussion of the flayed man.

BTF is one of my favourite books ever, and yes it does benefit from knowing the real history of the period, and I was shocked at him having other standalone books that were great.

It took me many tries, but I finally finished Hyperion Cantos and I understand the hype. I usually fucking loathe sci fi, but I liked the book way more than other "masterpieces" of the genre like Dune or Ender's Game. However, is the second book completely different? I enjoyed the Canterbury Tales shit with smaller stories, but I really didn't give a shit about the main storyline. My understanding is the second book is all about the war or whatever.

You aren't reading a book if you are listening to it.

Now with that necessary distinction done.
DDC has a great audiobook and 100% is the reason it blew up as big as it did even if the story itself is meh. I'm still annoyed at how obvious the first two books are just one book that was split almost at random.
>>
>>750927161
The second book can be thought of as the payoff for slogging through the first book. The third and fourth are where shit goes off the rails a bit.
>>
>>750927161
More or less yes. It follows the first book in a more straightforward manner, but I enjoyed how it followed different characters trying to navigate the chaotic events of the story while working towards their own goals, a wild ride to the end. The end itself is pretty lame however, and I've been talked against continuing on to following books to see if unresolved plot points, and there were several, get any meaningful conclusion.

Might I suggest something like Warbreaker or Emperor's Soul for Sanderson. Warbreaker is a standalone novel. I can't remember how good the prose is but I really liked some of the characters and the magic is neat. Emperor's Soul is a novella and also explores some cool (but different) magic system. Mistborn, especially the first trilogy, starts of YA adjacent and the protagonist is complete and utter dogshit, so I wouldn't recommend starting there. The Way of Kings is a 10/10 book, but the most recent Stormlight books have gotten almost unreadably bad. The dude needs to get his old editor back instead of letting tranny Ledditors poison his mind.

I still think the first book is pretty good
not quality literature or anything but somehow manages to be almost alone in it's niche despite how cliched the idea sounds and it executes well enough on the "farmboy raises dragon, goes on adventure" thing that if that is what you're looking for it doesn't disappoint, and there's strangely few other options
after the first book it starts going downhill, there's some good parts, I like his brother's sidestory from what I remember of it, but almost everything about the main plotline and the setting starts getting worse and worse
iirc the second book was mostly fine to "only bad in hindsight" so if you're enjoying it it's not like you should stop reading, but don't get your hopes up about all the stuff it sets up paying off in the end.

also I just learned he released a new book in 2023, what the fuck, I'll have to read it some time if only out of morbid curiosity.
