Tried getting into those games, but I keep worrying that the lack of voice acting will prevent me from knowing whether the games have good translations or are way too localized in an annoying way. Can you please recommend me some games with the best translations? I don't care about the genre.

Why?... I am fine with MTL suggestions also. Lots of vns are having them those days, why RPG Maker games not going for this route?
>>

I just checked it out, and all the prequels are not translated...

Did Nobey One (the guy who drew that) cancel that RPGmaker game he was making? Like, was that ever stated?

Black Souls 2 gets the Fromsoft tone well. It is also filled to the brim with various references, and the translator seems to have caught most of them, quoting the original English text (the game is full of Victorian-era authors) instead of offering his own butchered version.

extremely overrated game that rpg maker purists shill along with other trash like unterwegs and vampires dawn

Case in point: this scene would not hit as hard if the translator failed to notice the Nightingale pledge.
>>
>>750905685
The first translation is better because it is more faithful to the original, even if the second one sounds better. Can you play this game with the first TL?

BS1 and 2 are the only good RPGM games.

The first one is a shitty MTL. And it's probably the only game where the experience in English is arguably better than in the original Japanese, as you get access to the original quotes directly instead of through a Jap translation.

How do you know that? Do you have the Japanese lines on hand?

>And it's probably the only game where the experience in English is arguably better than in the original Japanese
Then the localizer should make their own game if they were better writers, no?
>>750911812
It is clear as day that the first one is the more faithful one to the original text, that how Japanese kuso texts sound like. The 2nd one is just english literature, nothing to do with Japan.

Well yeah, that's the point.
>>
>>750912398
So you just decided one was faithful and the other wasn't based on a coin flip. If you don't have the original dialogue, you don't know which is more accurate. You can't even say
>But a Japanese word is there so
Could literally be made-up. It happens.
>>
>>750903387
What's the problem with Enchant Farm?
>>
>>750912940
Nta, do you truly think there is a chance that the 2nd one is more accurate than the 1st one?... Why would the MTL translate it less faithfully than a localizer who is clearly deliberately changing stuff?
>>
>>750913118
Why would assume MTL is faithful? It could be removing shit or making up shit because it doesn't know how to handle the text. There's the also the possibility they're both wrong in different ways. You can't know without the original dialogue.

>It could be removing shit or making up shit because it doesn't know how to handle the text
Ah, you actually live in the 2000's, my fault for wasting time with you.
>>
>>750913578
Whether that's true or not changes literally nothing. You can talk about how the mindset or methodology of translators can run counter to accurate translation, that is independent of the fact that you need the original text to access accuracy.
>>750913706
Even to this day, MTL still does this.

>Despite objections manifold and manifest, I have preserved the balance of sentences and the prose rhyme and rhythm which Easterns look upon as mere music. This "Saj'a," or cadence of the cooing dove, has in Arabic its special duties. It adds a sparkle to description and a point to proverb, epigram and dialogue; it corresponds with our "artful alliteration" (which in places I have substituted for it) and, generally, it defines the boundaries between the classical and the popular styles which jostle each other in The Nights. If at times it appear strained and forced, after the wont of rhymed prose, the scholar will observe that, despite the immense copiousness of assonants and consonants in Arabic, the strain is often put upon it intentionally, like the Rims cars of Dante and the Troubadours. This rhymed prose may be "un English" and unpleasant, even irritating to the British ear; still I look upon it as a sine quâ non for a complete reproduction of the original.
Translation accuracy does not correspond 1:1 with using the same words in the exact same order. A perfectly normal and natural sentence in German or Russian can sound completely alien when translated this way; just look at how unnatural P&V feels, which is not the case with the original. Attempting to translate the original's style is a valid translation choice.
Of course you also have abominations like Wilson's translation of the Iliad+Odyssey, which maintains neither style nor meaning (translating Greek hexameter into English pentameter while keeping the line count 1:1 drops information by design)
>>
>>750913781
Anon I'm telling you replying to him is just going to go in circles.
>>
>>750913932
Nothing you said matters because you don't have the original text. You don't know whether
>1:1 with using the same words in the exact same order
Is relevant to either translations.
>A perfectly normal and natural sentence
How do you know the original Japanese is normal or natural? You don't. You can't. You haven't presented the source text.

doesn't matter, if you can understand Japanese, you can play most of the game without reading the subtitles
