>you need to steal the relic
>what's on it, uh, doesn't matter
>*this is never explained*

why would some random whore want an engram with johnny silverhand?
>>
My ADHD zoomie, it was explained.
>>
It's completely explained.
>why does she want the relic
She doesn't, the Voodoo Boys do.
>why do they want it?
Because they are trying to contact Alt beyond the Blackwall. The Silverhand engram is the best way to do so, and they're proven right.
>inb4 "but why does she want to betray the voodoo boys and take the relic herself"
She doesn't want the relic, Netwatch do-in order to get an advantage over Arasaka and to fuck over the Voodoo Boys, who are fucking retarded.

it's funny as fuck that some retard tried to portray the VDB as heckin wholesome defenders of the poor marginalised creole community in Pacifica. The canon 2077 VDB are genuine tweaking brainlets just poking the blackwall with their dicks without rhyme or reason on the off chance rogue AIs don't instantly fry them all when it falls.
>>
I'm trying to clear the base story but it is becoming increasingly difficulty to give a shit about any of these characters. I only like the protagonist and silverhand. I don't give a fuck about Panam. I don't give a single shit about Judy. Or Goro. Or Evelyn.
>>
>>750905254
The voodoo boys wanted it she was going to sell it to them.
>>
>>750905385
>I only like the protagonist and silverhand.
The closer you get to the end, the more it becomes about you two. The friends are mostly to unlock endings/do romances.

What stage of the story are you at?
>>
>>750905646
helped panam get her car back and emp'd the transport. talked to the guy in it with takemura. now plotting some parade thing to talk to hanako with takemura while looking for evelyn with judy
>>
>>750905768
You're pretty early on. The main story of Cyberpunk takes place in quite a short time (a few weeks/couple months) so it's intended to feel like you're doing a lot all over. The worst bits of the main story are pre-heist and pre-parade.

The Parade mission is very cool, and includes a pretty fun fight (provided you're playing on something above normal). The Evelyn questline is also good. I do like the characters you've mentioned but I likewise didn't give much of a shit until their questlines opened up and involved me more than "hello, come and meet all these people you don't give a fuck about." The main quest takes off quite quickly once you pass a certain point, and then you're suddenly at the point of no return-so don't be afraid to do side stuff. If you have the DLC, the best time to start it (to keep the plot momentum) is basically immediately after it becomes available. Opens up the new area+will add stuff to your open world (like car stealing missions, etc).
>>
>>750905254
Everyone wanted the engram to contact Alt because she's some sort of digital Lilith. Evelyn basically double crossed almost everyone involved and ended up getting fried by the VDB.
>>
>>750905379
The game also gaslights you into thinking Evelyn was some gigabrained genius who outsmarted everyone when in reality she was a dumb whore that thought she could outsmart the VDBs and got cooked remotely for it.

>VDB are heckin wholesome
I love how much all of the Dogtown haitians shit talk the VDB, especially Slider.

The only thing in the story I never really understood is why Yorinobu had the Relic with Silverhand's engram on it to begin with. I think he was planning to sell it to Netwatch, but IDK why they'd want it since it's not like Netwatch was going to try to broker a deal with Alt like the VDBs wanted to.
>>
>>750905379
>on the off chance rogue AIs don't instantly fry them all when it falls.
I always find this outcome so fucking funny.
Just I dont get to destroy them all myself after.
Even siding with the glowies is better than siding with the VDBs and you never see them after anyway.
>>

>>
>>750906031
I didn't read your post in its entirety because I don't want to spoil myself but fine I'll push myself to clear it. All these errands, looking around for people are just really tiring me out. I did some side mission with a dude who wanted to be crucified or something and shit was exhausting.
>>
>>750905254
The VDB's paid her to get a braindance of Yorinobu's suite, nothing else. She found out about the tech he'd stolen since she was fucking him, and brought it up unprompted to them and got shut down. She assumed she could steal it, and sell it to "someone" and get enough eddies to leave Night City. She didn't have a buyer in mind, she didn't know what was on it, she didn't know what the VDB's wanted it for, she had no idea what her next steps would be. She thought she could wash her hands of it when the heist went tits up and go back to life as normal like nothing happened.
>>
>>750906031
>If you have the DLC, the best time to start it (to keep the plot momentum) is basically immediately after it becomes available
Which is straight after the vodoo boys.
It is best to start it straight away as you have to wait days in between the DLC quests to get shit moving, which is where you can be doing the base game side quests.

>The game also gaslights you into thinking Evelyn was some gigabrained genius who outsmarted everyone
Yeah, it's pretty dumb. It's even funnier because basically everyone other than Jackie is constantly saying "you're working with Dexter Deshawn? That fat retard?" There are one billion signs that the heist will be a fucking disaster from the start.
>why Yorinobu had the Relic with Silverhand's engram on it to begin with.
Yorinobu is the secret good guy of the plot. He hates Arasaka, and hates his dad. He hasn't really "ended" his meme rebellion against Arasaka and instead wants to use the relic and Alt to bring it all crashing down; the game tricks you into thinking Hanako is the underdog good-guy of Arasaka when in reality siding with her is basically fighting to keep Saburo in control.
>>750906101
Panam by far is the best romance. Judy's is also great because of one mission in it which is absolutely oozing with soul, but the rest of her questline is very grim. Panam's is definitely the best overall. The real answer is the cut content Stout romance.
>>750906175
That side mission does blow, but if you play it again you CAN just shoot him and get paid+move on, kek. I would highly recommend pushing through, the story and characters are good-but the pacing in the first Act is weird as fuck.
>>
>>750906075
The engram of the story is an in-house only prototype used to reincarnate yourself basically, as far as I understood they were still testing it and Silverhand was used as guinea pig due to some sort of sentimentality from Saburo remembering the good ol' days. Yorinobu steals that shit to sell the tech to rival corps and fuck over his dad.
>>
>>750905254
She didn't know anything too, but she knew that messing everything gives her a slim chance to survive
>>
>>750906410
>Yorinobu is the secret good guy
He's a petulant retard who hates his dad, but he does get points for wanting to bring down Arasaka. He reminds me of Johnny in a way, since both are self aggrandizing losers that never really accomplish anything.
>Yorinobu wants to use the Relic to contact Alt via Silverhand's engram
Where is that discussed in the game? I only ever remember some emails you can read (as Evelyn during the braindance) in the Konpeki suite about Yorinobu wanting to sell the Relic to Netwatch.
>the real answer is the cut Stout romance
My brother, you have superb taste.

>>750906575
The Relic product exists in the world because there are in universe advertisements for it everywhere. The one that Yorinobu stole was a prototype. Silverhand's engram was just one of millions Soulkiller took with the others being in Mikoshi, so there was nothing unique about it that would require it to be on the prototype.
>>
>>750905379
Wait what? Who's trying to portray the people that attack you without provocation instead of letting you explain yourself?
>>
>>750905254

She was only in it for the money so she could leave the city in wealth. Voodoo Boys used her because they know Johnny had a personal connection to Alt.
>>
>>750906678
>He's a petulant retard who hates his dad
For sure.
>Where is that discussed in the game?
Apologies I misspoke, I meant to say he wanted to use the theft of the relic to bring Arasaka down, not by contacting Alt; only the VBD want to use it explicitly for that. The game uses le unreliable narrative to suggest Arasaka deliberately used it on Johnny but in reality it was Spider. But his motivation for taking it is very explicitly to fuck over Arasaka.
>>750906764
iirc some journos writing about the lore shortly after the game launched portrayed them that way, despite it not at all being the case in lore.

The original VDB (who the 2077 guys are named after, but unrelated to) were a bunch of larping white college kids.
>>
>>750906075
>why Yorinobu
Because he was a rockerboy wannabe when he did that whole Steel Dragons shit. Tiger don't change its stripes.
>>
It's explained.
Vodoo boys want the engram for blackwall shit.
They hire a convenient whore who neponaga is banging.
Whore decides she can do better and snatch the relic herself.

>>
>>750906410
>Yeah, it's pretty dumb.
I dunno I think it works, Jackie and V are so eager to make a name for themselves they ignore all the red flags on the job, and are punished for it. Evelyn convinces them she has control over the situation by acting cool and professional during the short time you have with her, but it turns out her life was just as much of a mess if not more than yours. if the job was super legit it wouldn't be handed out to some no name mercs, it would've been handed off to professionals. that's the tragedy of the whole thing, I think. two naive merc are manipulated into an extremely dangerous job that in the end will cost both of them their lives.

The one advertised is to just talk with engrams. Regarding what I said about Silverhand, I misremembered the diary of Saburo. I don't think there's a stated reason of why Johnny in particular is inside the engram, the only real possibilities as I see it are:

>Yorinobu wants to resurrect the one guy that nuked Arasaka to further nuke Arasaka
>Yorinobu was in contact with Netwatch to sell the tech to a rival corpo and destroy his family's legacy, Netwatch specifically ask for Silverhand to be uploaded into it because they are desperate about the blackwall's collapse and the total and absolute end of the world by rogue AIs. VDB caught wind of this and tried instead to steal the engram for themselves and secure Alt's protection in the apocalypse
>>
>>750907341
Soviets are building weaponry for Arasaka on the cheap under the table. They produce meme guns and big trucks. China is owned by a corp just like everyone else.
That's it.
>>
>>750907341
relegated to the USSR I think
>>
>>750907130
I rank the romances thus (very light mostly mechanical spoilers):
>Panam
Peak. Really good; probably the most thematically consistent with the story 2077 is trying to tell.
>Judy
Also really good, but kind of limited because Judy does not play as prominent a role in the main story/any endings. But the "we are now a couple" quest with her is probably one of my favourites in the game.
>Kerry
Good, but kinda clunky. It's really interesting and cool that it ties back to Johnny's history+has some cool moments, but it's also very late game and not as soulful as the others.
>River
The worst, by far. Part of the problem is that River and Goro were originally meant to be one character as part of an expanded Arasaka path (like Meredith Stout and a rumoured Militech Path) but instead they got split. Originally Goro didn't exist and River was a loyal Arasaka Goon who you'd have done the buddy-cop quest with. His romance sucks ass and has probably one of the worst missions in the game.
>>
>>750907341
Still exists, in this timeline the USA fell instead of the USSR.

2077 ends basically right as another major corporate war is about to start, with the restored USA (NUSA under President Myers) is about to try and take Night City+fully reunify the former United States.
>>
>>750905254
>why would some random whore want an engram with johnny silverhand?
she was hired by Mama Brigitte from the voodoo boys to get it.
They want to use the johnny engram to contact Alt Cunningham because she became some kind of AI machine god.
>>
>>750907392
Johnny didn't nuke Arasaka though, it was Morgan Blackhand, right? Johnny is just a loser who imagines himself doing that when in reality Adam Smaher just merk'd Johnny somewhere else. I think Alt even tells you straight up that Johnny's memories are totally unreliable.
>Netwatch asked Yorinobu to put Silverhand's engram on the Relic because they want to try the same deal with Alt that the VDBs are
I could partially believe that, but it's not really mentioned anywhere and none of the Netwatch agents you find in the game or PL ever hint at it. Even doing internet research and debasing myself by going to leddit only comes up with "Nobody knows, it's probably a plot hole and just an excuse to get Johnny/Keanu in your head ASAP".

>>750907704
>Johnny didn't nuke Arasaka though, it was Morgan Blackhand, right?
Yes, Johnny's team were intended to tie up Arasaka away from Blackhand.
>Johnny is just a loser who imagines himself doing that when in reality Adam Smaher just merk'd Johnny somewhere else.
I do think people jump the shark slightly; Johnny is an egomaniac but he was still absolutely and rightfully considered an NC Legend. He was hugely influential in the Rockerboy movement and a very competent fighter. He did indeed get cut in half by Smasher though.
>>750907704
iirc the canon lore is that Arasaka didn't put Johnny on the engram, Spider Murphy did. Arasaka just held onto it because now that it had been used, they wanted to study it. Maybe there's a suggestion they too hoped to use it to get to Alt, but it isn't stated.
>>
>>750907392
>can't romance Rita

>>
>>750907938
Johnny was a rockerboy star, yeah, but he's not this legendary Solo badass he pretends to be. I like that, though. The self aggrandizing unreliable narrator you can be a bro with, and the secret ending is the best one.
>canon lore
Spider (who is based) somehow finding out about Yorinobu's deal and putting Johnny on the relic to spite Arasaka would be a great coincidence. My headcanon for a while is that the prototype Relic was going to be used like it was in the Arasaka/Devil ending where Saburo takes Yorinobu's body to reincarnate himself, and Yorinobu found out and put Johnny's engram on there so it would be Johnny who came back to life, not Saburo.

Those memories are based on an adventure module for the tabletop with multiple paths and endings. Johnny does get killed by Smasher in all of them, though most of them he does it as an afterthought, on his way to fight Blackhand who he sees as his actual rival. The funniest one is Johnny opening up on him with an smug, Smasher having an is this nigga serious moment, cutting him in half with his fullnauto shotgun, then going back to looking for Blackhand without a second thought.

Sadly anon on a second playthrough you will notice that the game is EXTREMELY heavy-handed with the "every single one of you is in way over your heads" narrative.

The sole reason V is not also dead is because of the relic. Plus what happens to Evelyn post-heist is indeed horrifically dark, I think people maybe misunderstand just how utterly (and literally) skullfucked she is by the time you get her back to Judy's. Absolutely everything was riding on the heist, and you+evelyn+jackie were basically retards for thinking it'd work.

That's illusion of choice, not agency. Basically the equivalent of doing or not doing a quest, whatever you do you will always be "V" a solo merc with a preset personality and goals.
>>
>>750908475
Woodman raped her for several days while she still had damaged chip inside her head, then Fingers molested her while "fixing it", then scavs recorded snuff films with her for several days before you get her.
>Nigga she's a prostitute she already has sex with half the city.
you forgot that dollchip wipes memories after session, so at most she'd remember Yorinobu
>>
>>750908475
Did you miss her stumbling out of clouds like she'd just had a massive stroke? Because that's basically what the VDBs did to her, she not in he right mind when those scavs got her. Her suicide was her managing to pull enough of her old self together long enough to realize what kind of life was ahead of her, and deciding death was the better option. She was not herself, and was never going to be again, can't unscramble those eggs.
>>
>>750908439
This is also true.

There are a million and one tiny choices in the game, but almost none have any real branching relevance beyond
>if you do this characters questline, you get an ending unlock
>>750908475
>i dont understand why we're supposed to think she's so traumati
This what happens to Evelyn in the aftermath of the heist.

>Instantly depressed and paranoid as it all falls apart, returns to work at Clouds (which she hates)
>While at Clouds, Voodoo Boys attempt to nuke her brain for fucking them over (you see this in the Clouds hologram)
>With her brain fried, Woodman rapes her multiple times then sends her to Fingers who messes with her but can't fix her
>Fingers then gets the Tyger Claws to come and sell her to Scavs
>Scavs spend several days using her for basically pseudo-snuff porn over and over and over and over again, with both physical and sexual assault
There is very obviously a big difference between shitty but liveable work in a luxury place like Clouds and being chained to a bed and raped over and over again while all your Cyberware falls apart inside you.

Damn. They should have made Goro romanceable and delete River. Goro owes V sex.

>>750908708
It's not an illusion, it's actual choice. CP2077 is a role playing game and you're playing the role of V and can decide a lot of what happens, just like with Geralt in Witcher 3. No shit you'll always be 'V' because that's the main character.

The only real branching there is in Cyberpunk is the Maelstrom deal because the choice affects how you deal with the quest, everything else except for the ending itself can be summarised into:

-Stealth/pacifist?
-Just shoot people?
-Reject quest?

Maelstrom's quest is the only REAL branching too because there's an actual change to the world state due to your actions like in The Witcher. Sure, Geralt is a preset character( which makes the game a worse RPG, especially for the third installment which pretty much forces you to give two shits about Ciri and Yennefer) but much of his personality can be swayed by the way the player chooses and much of Geralt's interaction with the world serve as a way to illustrate that. Like siding more with humans than monsters, deciding to be neutral or not when it comes to politics, what romance choice you make, etc.

In that way V is much different, he will always be a solo merc, will never be able to join or affiliate with any gang except for the Moxes for some reason. Your romance choice is locked to gender and you can only choose if you are fucking gay. None of the factions have any relevance beyond being scenery. All you do is railroaded cinematic experience (tm) and your choice is to sit and watch or skip content.
>>
>>750910436
It's not like the chip was made for Johnny. He was just slapped on it. Reasons, several.
And yes, Arasaka has an extremely crude approximation with a thin veneer of Jackie if you drop him off there. Only so much that can be grabbed from a dead dude.
>>
>>750909753
Well, in that instance Dex wasn't expecting a shake up i. Maelstrom's leadership. He had presumably dealt with the previous leader and knew he wouldn't fuck him over like that. No one was counting on Royce taking over.

Did you know that at one stage Night City had a clown civil war?

>Gang called the Bozos emerged in 2017, mostly known for pulling silly hijinks like splashing paint on corpos and so on
>They dress as clowns and actually border cyberpsychosis due to all the modifications to look and sound like big OTT clowns
>In 2019 a new leader, the Great Bozo, joins
>pushes for violent, extreme pranks involving dangerous devices
>gang now responsible for murders, preying on people's fears
>canonically became gangstalkers of people they wanted to torment
>once a year they would stage "hilaria" where they'd cause as much chaos as possible
>in 2045 another clown, Big Top, formed his own gang of clowns and ended up declaring independence from the Bozos to form his own "circus"
>this started a war where the two clown gangs would terrorise Night City while also playing pranks on each other

>you can abandon River at the serial killer's farm, which gets him killed and fails the quest
>you can take too long to enter Dogtown after talking with Songbird which causes Space Force One to fly in and get shot down, which then locks you out of the entire PL main quest
>you can choose different approaches for quests, like being asked to deliver a car with a prisoner in the trunk, or choosing to let the guy out

If you're expecting separate, full length, mutually exclusive quest paths, there's fewer, but they do exist, mostly in the main path you take to PL's ending and in the overall game ending path you go for.

The smaller quests having forks, even the simple ones I mentioned, are still good, because almost every other game simply railroads you into 'do the quest' without even having options for you to fail or fuck up.

>>750911535
When did Reed ever lie to you? He holds up his end of the bargain if you do, he follows all of Meyers' orders to a T, and is basically just a whipped dog of the state.
>>
Isn't there an email in Yorinobu's penthouse from Netwatch asking why Johnny Silverhand was on the relic? Was this ever answered? I forget if Yorinobu responded to this
>>
>>750911984
>When did Reed ever lie to you?
First, lie by omission: he knows exactly what NUSA did to Songbird and that's she's attempting to run away. Instead telling it straight away he's priming V against songbird by claiming that Songbird doesn't know what she's doing and he knows best
Second, Slider: first sign how Reed negotiates, he presented Slider quid pro quo, while having zero intentions of letting him live
Third, twins: Reed clearly isn't sure if V wants to kill them so he massages around it by using words "neutralize", the moment we steal a car he executes them and states that there was no options for them to live. They had to die
Fourth and most important one: every time he talks how he's going to help Songbird. There was never any actual plan to make her disappear. He always planned to send her back to NUSA and Myers.
If you help Songbird in Firestarter nature of her crimes doesn't change at all but boy does Reed tone changes. She's no longer part of a team but a terrorist who's going to face who has to answer for crimes

>>
>>750912790
That's all really thin and a lot of your own interpretation, anon. I doubt Reed knows the extent of what Songbird is doing and is probably being fed bullshit by Meyers, which he just accepts.

>Slider
That's not Reed lying to V at all, that's Reed calling in a favor on a resource and then probably killing him after the fact. But since Slider got cooked indirectly by Songbird, we'll never know for sure.
>twins
I never took that as him lying to V, because he never said what would really happen to them. Him and the chick killing the twins just came off as ruthless pragmatism to me. RIP my French beauty
>he betrayed Songbird
Anon, Reed believes the only way Songbird can get help is through the NUSA. He's genuine in wanting to help her and save her. And if you both betray the NUSA, Reed gets a kill order (for V) and a capture (or kill if not possible) order for Songbird and, like the good glownigger he is, he executes that order.

There's no instance of Reed betraying V, I'm sorry. Songbird sure as fuck does, though. That's why I always give her ass back to the NUSA, so she can be tortured until death, and then collapse the Blackwall.

he was there when Songbird was losing memories after doing Blackwall missions, he knows, not being fed bullshit by Myers
Half-truth and lies by omission are lies in my book.
Withholding critical information from V to prevent V from forming own opinion and just follow Reed orders is him being liar and manipulator.
>Reed believes the only way Songbird can get help is through the NUSA
no he doesn't, which is why first he feeds V bullshit about black clinic in Europe, away from NUSA, after songbird "answers some questions"
>He's genuine in wanting to help her and save her
He doesn't, as long as songbird is alive he doesn't give a shit, his guilt consciousness is sated and that's good enough for him. That's not trying to help Songbird, it's Reed helping Reed and only himself
>>
>>750913891
There's no way Reed has the full idea of what Songbird is doing for Meyers, or Meyers would've had him killed.
>black clinic in Europe
Definitely exists and was probably an option he talked about with Meyers before she shut him down.
>Reed doesn't actually care about Songbird
Did you play the DLC? Did you even watch Reed's reaction when you do the bunker path and hand Songbird over? He's torn up over it.

Reed's behavior and motivations make instant sense when you realize he's being fed half truths by Meyers and might question some of them but doesn't rebel against any of it despite having an innumerable amount of opportunities to do so. He's what Johnny would've turned into (the jarhead that doesn't question anything) if Johnny stayed in the army, which is why that line is brought up later in the DLC. They try to position Reed as a tragic character, which is also why that bartender dies in the stadium when you betray Songbird.

doesn't need to know full extend, just need to know that it's no different from torture and he doesn't object.
>and was probably an option he talked about with Meyers before she shut him down
bull-fucking-shit, he is not letting Songbird go, it's the same shit as with Slider and twins, he presents position V can accept but the moment you'd hand songbird to Reed he'll become pragmatic. That's why he needs icebreaker, he knows why songbird doesn't trust him. Have you actually wondered WHY he needs to ask her few question and why they need to incapacitate her? If there is such black clinic he doesn't need to be part of it, he could give all the info to V and V can get Songbird there.

nothing about Songbird crimes changed before and after firestarter(if you side with her), all her crimes are the same, he already got an order to capture her and like good glownigger he is going to follow it. The only thing changes when he calls you is that V makes his position evident so there's no point of bullshitting
>Did you even watch Reed's reaction when you do the bunker path and hand Songbird over? He's torn up over it.
Yes, he cares about her dying. But he doesn't care about helping her, actually helping her. Her survival is enough for him. As evident if you hand Song to NUSA

Even V calls him out on bridge, Reed is not doing all of that for Songbird, Alex, NUSA or Myers, he is doing it all for himself

>it's torture
All Reed knows is that Songbird is sick/in a bad way from the aggressive hacking shit she does for Meyers. He's not a netrunner and doesn't know the details beyond the Blackwall being involved.
>he's not letting Songbird go
No shit. I'm saying the EU clinic could've been something he pitched with Songbird still being under full NUSA custody, and Meyers told him "No, we'll use our people."
>he cares about her dying but not helping her
u wot? He goes out of his way to make sure she's taken care of and watches over her like a parent when you do the NUSA handoff after the bunker. It's not at all the same kind of indifferent 'I'm a professional doing a job' shit you see when interacting with him throughout the DLC.
