1) How often do you play old games2) Do you find them to be more or less immersive than new games on average
1. almost exclusively, own no current gen consoles2. i can be as immersed in an nes game as i can a semi modern AAA
1) all the time and ive enjoyed randomly picking stuff on NSO I wouldnt think of2. Yes mostly because they have actual colors and thoughtful designs and I grew up with them. Hyper realistic AAA does nothing for me. Only game that did was Elden Ring, but I got very burnt out by the bosses. Exploration was great at first
>>7509060421. For asyncs only once a month or so, I played them as a kid why would I want to now?2. Significantly less, shitty controls, shitty camera, shitty graphics, shitty gameplay. It constantly breaks immersion for me when the game feels like shit to play. A game can look like garbage(Underrail, Void Stranger, Valheim) and still be immersing, but if it feels like garbage then it's not.
>>7509060421. I play everything I missed from previous generation2. I found that x360 was the last era when devs really considered that majority of players has 100IQ+
>>750906042The only old games I play are the old games I grew up with. I find it nearly impossible to put myself in the shoes of someone who grew up with different games than me when I try to play the games I missed.
1. All the time... I mainly only play retro games2. It doesn't matter. I just enjoy retro games.
>>750906042I don't acknowledge nu-games, so sometime or another
>>7509060421. over 95% of the time2. Kinda? Haven't really bothered to play many new games besides Pizza Tower (but even then that was a few years ago). I mainly stick to older games because:-They are cheaper (excluding CIB and certain games)-I already have the consoles and accessories needed to play them-Or I can just emulate them on my desktop
Modern games feel overproduced for immersion, too intentional and designed, I don't know how else to express it
>>750906042Very oftenMore so than modern. Nothing comes close to thief dark project
>>7509060421. pretty frequently, probably a bit more often than stuff from the last 15 years if I don't include modern multiplayer slop2. Much more immersive on average. There are a handful of exceptions but I agree with >>750907867 . even the games that feel like they should be immersive feel off
>>7509060421. Almost exclusively. Just played through Donkey Kong 64 and the original Mortal Kombat for the first time recently and had a blast.2. Old games are almost always way better than new games, no doubt. New games have no edge or soul because everything has to be formulaic and by-the-book or the investors drop out.
>>7509060421. I play then a lot. Played X-COM UFO defense yesterday.2. More, for various reasons. One is that more abstract graphics are both more readable and require you to use your imagination.
>>7509060421. Almost exclusively. Since 2021 I've dedicated the majority of my gaming time to games released between 1980 and 1999. Soon I'll move on to the early 2000s.2. Tough to say since I haven't played too many modern games. Sure I've played the big ones like Elden Ring, Silksong, Tears of the Kingdom, and some indie games, but I've never touched Assassin's Creed, COD, Fortnite, Insomniac and Naughty Dog games, etc, so I have no concept of how "immersive" new games are. But there have been several games that I played in the last five years that really took over my soul in a lovely and satisfying way that only older games do. That goes for games that I played for the first time so I'm not talking about nostalgia.
>>750906042all the timeon average, a little bit more. probably because i don't play many modern action/platformer/FPS games though and mostly stick to simulation and management games
1) never2) no
>>750906042define an old game
>>7509060421) quite often2) Usually yeah. The difficulty alone makes them more immersive than easy casual af game. Obviously though there are big exceptions, but even say this year the best games I've played are from old IPs (Doom Revelation and Ace Combat 8 are my 2 gotys, and AC8 is easy as fuck and is only entirely immersive due to how effort they've put on the story and music)
1. I sometimes of back to games I was never old enough to experience from the SNES, PS1, N64 era2. No they are not more immersive. Graphically I can deal with them just fine, but they're often too obtuse to engage with them as they are.
>>750906042no, most dont hold up.
>>750906042>1) How often do you play old gamesMore often than not>2) Do you find them to be more or less immersive than new games on averageMore, I think. There's a level of abstraction that makes me mentally engage with them more deeply.
>>7509060421) More than new games2) About the same, not many new games are particularly immersive imo
>>7509060421. not as much as i thought, most of them are from ps2 era though2. yes but mostly because there are no fetch quests or other brain-off shit
>How often do you play old gamesAlmost daily. Nearly all of my vidya time in the past several years has been dedicated to playing games made in 2000 and before.>Do you find them to be more or less immersive than new games on averageMore immersive in that they tend to draw my attention for longer periods without getting distracted with browsing.
>>750909380I just finished Deus Ex again yesterday. And now I just want to play it again.
>>750906042Older games are thousands of times more immersive than new games, and by new game I mean anything released after 2009. When the graphics get "better" it makes the game look less believable and worse. Monster Hunter Wilds is the absolute worst looking in the entire series, Dos looks infinitely better graphically.
>>750912895When are we getting the remaster on Switch 2
>>750906042Newer games are thousands of times more immersive than old games, and by old game I mean anything released before 2009. When the graphics get "worse" it makes the game look less believable and worse. Monster Hunter Wilds is the absolute worst game in the entire series, and that's saying something, because the series is quite bad.
>>750906042I mostly only play old gamesMy frame of reference for "new games" stopped around 2018. The games back then at least were not immersive at all and I doubt anything has improved. The industry as a whole forgot what art direction is, there's been a collapse of institutional knowledge that's led to things looking progressively worse in higher and higher fidelity until they just aren't worth looking at whatsoever.
