it feels like a proto FF5. its story is paced the same as a dungeons and dragons campaign where the DM is coming up with new shit every week.

1 is the best game of the PR series imho. 1 long, coherent adventure with a customizable party with decisions that matter

2 is a black sheep amongst the entire series as its progression system is so different, but after giving it a second chance, and reminding myself that we haven't had a 'traditional' leveling experience since FF9 25+ years ago, its alright. it has the DNA of an 80s jrpg with all the bullshit that entails but thats wiped out by the QoL changes

The game shines its best when played in series order. If you go from I->II->III then III feels like a real winner. Job System's back, expanded upon, you can swap jobs even. It's great and cool.
If you play its successor (FFV) first, it will feel frankly primitive. In a way that I would argue not even FFI does since FFI's "Choose One" system compounded with the rather simple and short adventure make it incredibly replayable. FFIII is similarly something that can be replayed, but out of the Job System Trilogy of I/III/V, I would say it's the weakest in that regard as several times over jobs feel less like extensions of Player Freedom and more like answers to problems that the game has presented you.
Either way, I'd say it's worth at least playing through if you do have any interest in older FF, all of the NES trilogy are. And the GB games as well, if you want to follow from where II left and how SaGa came about in FF Legend (or Mana in FF Adventure).

Was the DS version a poor remake or is the game really just that bad? The story was uninteresting, the gameplay and overworld traversal was a slog, and I remember the job system felt like it was actively punishing you.

It's better than 1 and 2 at least, but 5 shits all over it.

Its more like a revision remake, same with the DS version of 4. The 2D games are vastly different than the 3D games in a lot of ways. As for the story, the stories didn't start to get serious until FF4. 3 was kind of like a follow up to FF1.

yeah, what i don't like about 3's jobs is that often the game essentially "forces" you to be a certain job or it basically kills you and many jobs are meant to be straight upgrades. there is really no reason to stick with the knight and every endgame party is basically gonna be 2 ninjas and 2 sages. sure maybe you can get all lv99 onion knights with the onion equipment as a post game thing

1 is fucking amazing to this day. yes, even the original nes version without any patches at all.
2 is... a mixed bag. everyone memes the levelling system but who cares, play it casually and don't try to minmax. 2 is very much about mood and a surprisingly fun story for how limited it is also the bad guy is so evil when he dies he usurps satan himself and comes back. in the psp remake you meet his good half but he's such a piece of shit his good half is still evil and that's fucking based
