EA just released a shitload of old games on Steam. There's 20-30 of them. Ultimas, Wing Commanders, Crusaders, Theme Hospital, even Road Rash.
I only really played the last two mentioned above. Anything worth getting?

Because Howard Day himself as the wing commander community are at literally the ones working on this.
And yes, this isnt over yet, there is more in the future on the "Fast" and "Living though Death" side of things.

God bless the Saudis

If you owned the original even through giveaway at the EA APP, you got them for free too, in this case i got both crusader, theme hospital and WCIII

I remember last time EA shadow dropped a bunch of legacy titles onto Steam a solo dev killed himself due to his indie game spent the last 5 years making getting kicked off new and notable.

Wing Commander and Privateer were so great that they enabled Chris Roberts to pull off Scam Citizen. or at least the first few games, if it's got Kilrathi you're okay it's after Prophecy they introduced the equivalent of 'an ancient evil awakens'
the old Ultimas you're getting varying levels of quality because some are antique greats and others antique stinkers. they're all antiques.
also they're all on GOG and probably don't have the EA App packaged in over there
>>
>>751017350
Probably not going to happen again this time since it's the big November game month. Unless someone's stupid enough to say "I thought PC would be safe and it'd only be consoles! EA raped me!"

All the Ultima and Wing Commander games are good, except Ultima 2 and 9, those are kinda poopy, at least compared to the rest of the series. Wing Command has some really annoying missions, but they're all solid.
I'm kinda impressed by these releases, EA has always buried their head in the sand when it comes to their old games, so seeing these is pretty cool.

I just saw the EA news, got Road Rash on GOG, and then came here F-5ing.

They must have gotten the original videos and remastered them, this is way too good for an AI upscale.
I love the full music in game. I'm so happy its all here.
The save game menu is clunky, and pressing things on my PS5 controller speeds through selections at light speed, I need to use my keyboard to do that.

Other than that, I'm glad to give $5 to have a offline installer, despite the current-patched original win95 installer still running in w11 for me. I will get Wing Commander later, likely on PB.

Nice.
My Grandfather got a 3DO at launch, hoping to do video editing and mixing stuff, connected to a PC, but none of that stuff was developed when the console didn't make a profit.
He got a handful of games with it, VR Stalker, Flying Nightmares, Crash n Burn, but Road Rash was amazing. Load times sucked and the game chugged at points, but its was very crisp and sharp on a 30" CRT. I own it now, with most games and some controllers/joysticks.

I will have to show him this, and the v2 Repack of the original.

Underworld games are. Ultima I through VI are basically what jrpgs used to be back in the day, top-down party-based combat in large worlds. Ultima V, VI, and VII hold up quite well. V and VI hold up if you like 80s/90s era PC-88/98 jrpgs, otherwise you can just pirate VII. Lord British doesn't get any money and Origin is long dead.
>>
>>751041397
>JRPGs
I am highly interested, can I play V, VI, VII without playing the previous games? I watched a lot of the Majuular videos and had a passing interest in these games, particularly for historical reasons, but the games -sound- cool.
>>
>>751041689
I dunno who that is and don't watch e-celeb shit. Lord British went to Japan to work out a deal with Falcom to port the Ultima games, but got pissed off when he discovered they basically ripped off literally fucking everything and sued their asses. There's a reason the japs aren't too keen on the PC otaku crowd, it's an entirely different culture than the console babbies. I'm consistently bemused by jewtendo types here and abroad, but I was part of that culture back in the 90s and thus feel morally and spiritually superior to consolefags as a result.

Regardless, you can. Ultima I, II, and III are kinda ignored. IV is really the "first" game in the Avatar series, but you can safely skip it. If you are genuinely interested in that era of jrpgs, IV might be an interesting experience to see a more refined version of what Falcom stole and the start of the divergence betwixt western and eastern RPGs. Ultima was so goddamn influential that its combat style and game design was used until like 2002. Maybe a bit later, depending on whether or not you want to consider Windows ports of older games.
>>
>>751041689
I played half of them out of order and didn't feel like I was missing much.

>>
>>751014496
The Wing Commander series is so fucking good, and the fact that the FMV's are all remastered from the original source tapes and film is based as fuck. Also, the original versions of most of these were a huge pain to get working properly on modern PC's with modern hotas and controllers, so the fact that they recognize my Xbox controller and thrustmaster out of the box is really nice. I even tested two of them on Steam Deck and they work decently well there too. Absolutely peak series for anyone who has never played them, and they were way ahead of their time back in the early to mid 90's with high budget cutscenes, dialogue choices, building relationships with your squadmates and branching missions based on your decisions or outcome of previous missions. This is all stuff that became standard in a lot of games nowadays but they were doing it years before even the likes of Bioware.

>C&C:TS/RA2 remaster
They got decompiled. Community can just make anything with it now and AI generate new cutscenes.
>>
>>751048683
AI won't be able to do the shit that made the C&C1 Remaster great, other than letting me zoom-in the game and scale the HUD so it's not tiny as fuck at 1440p. Claude won't give me new, cleaner renditions of the music by Klepacki or source FMV.
>>
>>751048736
Frank Klepacki is based and would make a new OST for a community project.
FMV's might be hard but very possible now with AI.
There was a 'Red alert 2 in real life' series made with AI on youtube. With enough effort and enough autism put into it, it could have soul again

Aww, they did not update the "bike intros" in the shop in Road Rash. I would have loved to see that updated, its so fun to view each one.
>>
>>751050719
It's basically just the PC version with better music/fmv quality. They did nothing regarding improving the game like taking the aspects from the other versions of Road Rash '94 like NightDive would have done.

Which is a shame, since the Windows version sound effects are ass compared to any other version of this game.
>>
>>751018773
They did a really good job on the C&C/RA remasters they put out a while back. Also had a lot of behind the scenes videos, and it let you toggle between new graphics and old which was good because the new graphics look like mobile game shit
>>
>>751051120
I guess we could mod in the other sound effects. Maybe they will allow steam mod shop support
>>
>>751051224
Hopefully. It's the game that got the most dev attention out of everything they've released as far as programming went. The rest is just community programmers for the Wing Commander series, and having someone run FMV clean-up on the tape dumps.

That said, holy fuck I forgot how bad Wing Commander 3's FMV quality was. The Kilrathi's fur on the costumes is a fucking blur pon the original compared to what this new version shows.
>>
>>751014496
how about you get off your asses at EA and rerelease something people might actually want to play, like Black&White?
>>
>>751051424
The guy interviewing the dude responsible behind this recent push already brought up B&W. It ain't on the books for now, and they got other shit to potentially work on first from the new tape collection.
>>
>>751051137
That's because the C&C remaster was done by staff from westwood. So it was basically old crew coming back together to do the remaster.
>>
>>751014496
Wing Commander 3 is effectively the first cinematic video game. It's the first massive budget AAA game as we know them that pushed technology to the absolute limit. If nothing else, it is an enormously influential piece of gaming history that changed the industry forever in a lot of ways. So many games now owe a lot of their design elements, scale, and ideas to things that Chris Roberts and Origin were doing with that series in the early 90's, especially that game in particular. If you've ever played any modern game that let you talk to the characters in your base between missions, make dialogue choices, and actually grow bonds between them that affect their storylines and their abilities in missions, well, this is the series that invented that. In a time when most major video games had budgets below $500k, they dumped over $4 million into it and it showed. The cast of actors they had for the FMV's and voicevers was unreal, especially in those days. A lot of recognizable faces in that series, even if some weren't quite famous yet back then. On top of all of that, they are also just plain fun to play and massively influenced all the other big space combat sims of the era like X-Wing/TIE Fighter and Freespace.

tl;dr Play these absolute classic masterpieces and finally learn why people are obsessed with waiting for Star Citizen and Squadron 42 no matter how long they've been taking

Cool games.
Love from Kazakhstan
What these EA niggers did to Skate is unforgivable. I hate them so much it's unreal.
>>
>>751053685
>finally get a new Skate
>it's the worst map of the four main Skate games
>so many limitations that you can't do the shit (still) that you could in the previous ones
>mandatory online with 80+ players yet no one can fucking type or talk to each other for over a year unless you're in a party with voice enabled
ReSkate must have been a fucking wake-up call for them since they're enabling proximity chat game-wide next week.
>>
>>751053730
ReSkate already has proximity chat from default, it's been in the EA client for a long-ass while. Same for the shitty game of skate the black folk been posting about since release.
What they need is to stop being gay and update the game itself to be on EA's version.
>>
>>751053780
They need to finish bringing back shit that the playtest client had, like ACTUAL community park building, since you used to have snapping tools and unlimited building limit within the park areas, compared to the released game where it's just premade parks from EA only.

Hell, the create-a-park warehouse from the playtests still isn't in despite that sitting in the client too.
>>
>>751053849
For that to happen they need to stop being trannies. They keep adding bloated shit like discord interaction, brought back the store to show black people mods and shit like that.
Actual features? None since initial release.
>>
I wonder if road rash has the full soundtrack? I can't imagine it does. there was like smashing pumpkins and soundgarden in there.
>>
>>751053898
>Actual features? None since initial release.
They added my fingerflips fucking finally at least, even though the grind physics/animations are still fucking broken and send my skater shooting off at 40 miles at least once a day ever since this season started.

I was hoping losing half of their team meant less bureaucracy on the team to vote for and implement the shit the players and devs themselves want, but it's not been the case.

>>751054050
Full soundtrack to my recollection. It took them nearly a year to secure the rights going by the interview.
>>
>>751054125
I mean ReSkate, not EA. ReSkate added nothing since its release, and that is on purpose, according to the two discord devs.
Full Circle is probably a skeleton crew. They had people from dice to come over during development/playtests, they fucked off to Battlefield after, then they got the first wave of layoffs and THEN now a second wave. If you read their blogs, the bugs only grow in size, there's no "solved" section anymore. Everything they been released was already in the client, like the halloween event, no complies, all the shitty assets, and etc.
Worst part is that there is no bureaucracy from EA except from licensed stuff, but skate brands are retarded cheap compared to music and other stuff.
