I don't think that's a mere animation issue, there's something wrong with their shape so they just cannot express correctly.The originally overcame simple polygon issues with textures though, so that's why they're so much more "expressive". It's not the models they use. These models had to achieve the same result and they just didn't. To be frank, I'm not sure it's even that possible to emote as well as the original because of the way it's done in the original without resorting to toon link tactics.Toon Link expresses way more than any link because they use texture sprites actually very well in retrospect. It just doesn't work as well with 3D models most of the time without having extremely complex models or other tricks. Generally, anime using CGI looks like shit for a reason. The models just don't express and the lighting just doesn't work well with them.Toy Story is staggering is because it's one of the rare times it's done well and even then it feels totally different to 2D animation. 2D animation just does things 3D cannot do. Even humans don't do things as well as 2D, that's why we have to use makeup or be Jim Carrey from the Grinch and do his Grinch face. But in hollywood drama, what they lack in exaggeration effects, they make up with subtlety and this game doesn't even do that right. It doesn't do the subtle things right and it just feels like a flat hollywood performance.

Though that also felt kinda stylistically held back by the DS for me and others. It's also around when censorship became noticeable with it more and more. It's always been there, but it got noticeable worse after TP, which toned things down.
