You want to know why? the real why?

Here the reason: It's because japanese love to go to Hawaï for vacation, and most of those franchise that got popular (sonic, mario, final fantasy etc...) usually do some traveling to take photo and more before working on a new world for a new game, so why not doing both?

you are fucking retarded, I took that one example for SA1 regarding mystic ruin, but if you did make some research you would have realized that it was quite usual for those studios to do this, and yes, hawai was used for that.

>vagrant story
I heard you also took a trip to France to do research and get ideas. That must have been very helpful for creating a more realistic world.

Yoshida: Matsuno wanted “ruins”. His image was of a town that was falling apart, already half-crumbled. So we took our cameras in hand, and just wandered around the streets in France. Leá Monde was modeled after Saint-Émilion, a city in Southern France

And now it's 2026, and young Japanese people are too frightened to travel abroad (see the Nippon Foundation's 2025 survey) because:

a) they've been brainwashed into thinking that everywhere outside Japan is extremely dangerous and only Japan is "safe";

b) they've been duped into thinking that experiencing things vicariously through TikTok and other social media platforms is just as good as experiencing new places firsthand, completely robbing them of any yearning for what's over the horizon; and

c) they're too poor to travel overseas even if they want to, thanks to 35 years of virtually stagnant wages, a weakening yen, and massive inflation in overseas markets.

Did you know that the average income in Japan (¥4.8 million per year) is now lower than what a full-time Walmart greeter earns in a flyover state like Illinois (¥4.93 million per year)?

Anyway, that's part of the reason why Japanese games rarely feature wonderful, cheerful tropical places anymore. They're too destitute to go there, have been brainwashed into thinking that "there" is scary and going there will get you killed, and have deluded themselves into thinking that the "there" on their smartphone is just as good.

To be frank, they are not entirely wrong about "it's unsafe somewhere else". Here where I live, asian tourist (chinese/korean/japanese) are prime target because they usually don't fight back or know or talk english properly so the Police will not help them.

As for the average income, yes, it's bad, but it's bad for everyone now, including Europe, USA is a bit of an exception.

But overall, I do agree with you, the modern japanese guy doesn't have that flame or ferocity than those old japanese men did have, they lost their "souls".

Tropical beaches are typically on islands. And islands are a good spot for the protagonist to start a journey. The isolation explains why they don't know much of the world so the player can find out along with them.

Maybe you feel that way about where you live. However, most types of violent crime (homicide, robbery, auto theft, etc.) were much more prevalent in the '90s, when the visual language of Japanese pop culture expressed an idealized vision of the outside world as an embodiment of freedom, discovery and possibility. So, the two trends aren't moving in the same direction, see?

As a whole, the Japanese mindset has shifted from international curiosity and expanding personal horizons (1970s - 2000s) to one in which nearly half their youth have adopted a fearful, inward-looking, almost hikikomori-ish lifestyle (2010s-2020s). And I think it has less to do with actual safety and more to do with a kind of collectively acquired learned helplessness caused by decades of depravation: can't afford to go to Hawaii, can't afford to send your kids to the school they want to go to, work culture sucks just as much as it did when things were good, taxes are getting real bad, and the general feeling that your prospects won't get better no matter how much you work.

It's specifically when the graphics and processing got good enough to do realistic water with polygons, prior to that you either got chunky textures with clumsy waves superimposed or they just went with pre-renders to do it.

It reeks of Enlightenment misinformation to insist the new zeitgeist is simply better than what came before. not even, because if it was the case, the PC/western games would have followed too (cf, they didn't).
You could make excellent "beach" visuals already on previous hardware (psx/saturn/n64).
>>
>>751058081

Sorry, I don't know what to tell you. I just wrote two effortposts explaining why things are very not "good" in Japan. The only thing I disagreed with was your reasoning for why, which I pointed out was fundamentally flawed and completely at odds with reality. You're trying to turn a discussion about Japan's economic stagnation, declining international aspirations and changing cultural attitudes into an argument about American racial politics. That's a completely different discussion, I couldn't give less of a shit about it, and it's entirely off-topic for this thread.
