So the people stuck there get isolated and weird and only have their relatives to marry, which makes their kids retarded and thus they get even more isolated and weird. And this keeps going until some development project forces them out or else they, being below replacement, just die out for good. Obviously this is way more common in rapidly developing countries (aka the third world) since in most parts of the developed world the process was gradual enough that technology propagated to the boonies before they could get cut out by quick development. Being large or rugged makes it more likely. Even countries that are advanced today but had rapid growth like Russia or China suffer from weird little inbred shitholes in the middle of nowhere. But there's still some parts of highly advanced countries with slow development where this happened that have examples, like the Appalachians in the US where hyper-isolated pockets are dying.

I’m somewhat early in the game and I got the quest where you have to do a favor for everyone and I think I pretty much ruined it for myself. I did everyone’s quests before Yoh and I’m pretty sure the fish she wants only shows up in spring or summer or soemthing because it’s autumn and I haven’t seen a single one. It’s looking like I just have to wait on an entire year to complete this quest. On the bright side I have been doing a good job farming so I have hundreds of thousands of dollars but damn, I can’t get anyone’s relationship past one bar because of this.
