It really feels like they made one or maybe two full areas and then called it a day. If you could play through the archives without needing to beat the rest of the game, then you would never need to go past crucifixion woods to see all the game has to offer.

They both suck in their own special ways.DS2 has better progression, better art direction and better gimmicks, but everything about the combat outside of some weapons and powerstancing fucking blows, the animations are atrocious even though they fixed criticals and had fun gestures, the actual level design is largely awful despite the aesthetics with only a select couple of zones like Lost Bastille being actually decent to navigate and while some NPCs like Straid, Gavlan or the Emerald Herald were pretty good the rest is just forgettable no matter how much they try to make me care about Lucatiel.DS3 has slightly better combat and animations, the level design is better on average and combat design is better on paper for most things, but it's linear as shit so the progression and character building fucking sucks, the balance is all over the place and most of the game is a rehash of Demon Souls, which gets tiresome after a while especially when a lot of these homages are 1:1 instead of being interesting twists like Eigon, oh and the aesthetics fucking blow for the most part.The worst thing about DS2 is that there was a good game somewhere in there, at some point, but the game was hastily remade into something else so most of it is poorly made garbage, even if it has a clear King's Field style it's just clumsily stapled onto the Souls formula without any polish, what little improvements it has over DS1 are drowned into a sea of garbage that makes it hard to appreciate the steps forward.The worst thing about DS3 is that it's sandwiched between BB and ER as a weird middle of ground, it doesn't lean in the more action-y design and lovecraftian aesthetics of BB and it's rendered completely irrelevant by ER when it comes to the more orthodox Souls formula, DS2 at the very least has an actual identity for better or worse, even if most of it is crap so DS2 ends up being actually more distinct while DS3 is just a poorly made tech demo for ER with tons of DeS memberberries.

Dark Souls 2, but I don't enjoy Souls games anymore. I don't enjoy third person ARPGs at all anymore. I think it's because of the depression.
