How do you guys balance gamedev with the rest of your lives? I spend 8 hours every day working, then I go home and dev for several hours. I practically never play any vidya or do anything else lately. I kinda just wanna chill and play some vidya, not I also feel like I need to keep devving forever.

WRONG

Either reward yourself for finishing a milestone with some vidya, or define break days where you play and don't dev.

I treat it like any other hobby that I have. Some days are more productive than others especially if you have no other obligations. If you feel more productive following a weekly schedule, set one up for yourself and stick to it. You'll have to do the tedious parts of dev eventually, so setting aside time to hammer that out can keep you making progress.
For context I don't have a life, I just work and come home with a weekly outing with my best friend on Saturdays. Leaves me plenty of time to do regular adult shit and the rest is free space for whatever hobby I feel like on any particular day.
Just keep making progress, you'll get there so long as you don't give up, get bored, or throw the entire thing out and start over.

I always lose track of these so thanks for reminding me. One of these days I gotta impress one of these dudes to collab with.

I just feel like devving should always be my #1 priority. I want my game to be finished sometime before I die, and I feel like unless I'm devving every single available moment, I'm slacking off.

you're gonna induce burnout in yourself and never get it finished. you need to know when to just take some leisure time.
getting your game finished isn't a race, and if you treat it as such you're going to beat yourself up for lofty expectations that you were never going to meet in the first place. most self-published games languish in obscurity and you need to be mentally prepared to accept that reality, and stressing yourself for potentially years by propping it up as your #1 priority is just going to feed that sense of resentment when the likely outcome is that it is a financial flop
make your game because you are having fun doing it, the rest should follow

>getting your game finished isn't a race,
I have like a million different "dream games" that I want to make, but I don't have the resources/skills yet to make them, so I'm working on a much simpler game. If I don't finish this one in a reasonable timeframe, I'll never get a chance to start any of the other games.
>and if you treat it as such you're going to beat yourself up for lofty expectations that you were never going to meet in the first place.
I know for a fact it'll be a commercial failure (and probably a critical failure too), but I just want to be done with it already.

it's good that you're working on smaller projects to hone your skills and become familiar with the actual development cycle that any game will need to go through.
if you really want to set some constraints on time, you'll want to establish some boundaries for scope so that you don't wind up accidentally dooming yourself to scopecreep. contest development such as ludam dare or gamejams are good small-scale premises that force you to be economical with your time. for a full-scale game where you are working full-time, the old metric for being "on time" was 2-3 years, obviously this doesn't apply to everyone since you may only be dedicating part-time work on something. but to put into perspective, Cave Story was made in 5 years time. Get an idea for how big of a project you're trying to make early, and then cut yourself off from building new systems that aren't part of your original scoping.
The fewer gameplay systems you need to make, the less complex it gets to do regression testing and retrofitting new systems into the old.
most devs never make their dream game. it's sad but that's reality. but you should take pride in finishing what you're working on now first, rather than on far-off ideals. Hell if your code for a system is good and flexible enough (for example, input handling), you could forklift it into a new project with minimal changes, which expedites how quickly you can rapid-fire out some small projects.

>most devs never make their dream game. it's sad but that's reality.
gamedev is literally all i have. i don't have kids, i don't have friends, i'm not the kind of person who could make some extreme scientific breakthough. if i don't dev, what the fuck am i doing here on this planet? i have a job and a home, but they're just vehicles to gamedev. you might argue that every single action i've ever taken in my life since the age of, like, 10, was done with the ultimate goal of making games.
i've finished like a million that'll never see the light of day, and a couple with proper releases, but even those are objectively pretty bad compared to some other solo dev masterpieces, like balatro.

genuinely, you need to not compare yourself with others. if you compare with anyone, compare with your past self to reinforce the fact that you've gotten better with time and experience.
not having a family or many friends sounds like you're making an excuse for how sad of an existence. Most people never amount to anything more than mediocrity, and that's normal. You aren't special, I'm not special. But we still make what we can out of the time we have.
just make games that you're proud of, dream game or not.
I earnestly believe that you should pick up another hobby or two though, having literally only 1 thing to toy with when you're alone with your own thoughts isn't a particularly healthy outlet if you ever feel like you're losing passion for it or it is amounting to nothing. Having another way to relax and de-stress separate from making vidya is as important as not eating the same thing every meal of every day.
>>
>>751148352
but i do eat the same meal every single day lmao
i've got a bunch of phone games that i installed but never launched. maybe i'll try them tonight. but even if i do, i'll probably just be thinking of gamedev while playing.
