In SoC there is a PDA entry about a failed military operation that happened sometime in 2011 in which over a thousand people were involved but it failed for some unknown reason. If we assume that something turned at least half of these soldiers into snorks then their number in the trilogy can be explained. No idea about S2 since it happens a decade after but it's not canon anyway.

Emissions don't cause mutations, they are always lethal. The thing about snorks is that while the fact that they all look exactly the same is obviously a technical restriction like in the case of all other mutants, they are still supposed to be all wearing this specific kind of gas mask and military uniforms lore-wise. Isn't that pretty much the in-game lore reason? If I remember correctly, snorks are supposed to be the soldiers who were guarding the perimeter when the first emission happened in 2006 which formed the Zone.

I think it would be cool if DLC 2 was Cold Island and the forest area. IIRC, the forest area was supposed to have places perpetually on fire due to anomalies. So it could give it a fire/ice theme.

No, that's the original explanation the mutant's creator gave in the monster contest. The games themselves never explicitly state their origin, best thing you get is an assumption in SoC encyclopaedia that they "might be what's left of missing military stalkers".

Anomeme is actually good. I was going to complain about it copying SoC CNPP gameplay (fighting through hordes of monolith with 0 anomalies/mutants) but then I remembered SoC starts doing this as soon as Garbage/Agroprom. Most of the gameplay in SoC/CS is just less dynamic/tougher CoD.
