P3F really pulled it off the best by incentivizing walking and rewarding the player for it. I mean that was the entire point of Elizabeth's quest in the first place. I remember talking on this topic with my m8 a while ago. It was particularly about the vending machines and how they operated in FES. How you had to memorize where each vending machine was and what kind of drinks they had in stock because every single location offered a exclusive set of Sodas. And since you couldn't just fast travel you were forced to like walk all the way to those locations plus the dispensing process wasn't instant because you were greeted with the mechanical tingles of thejr inner workings similar to how a real vending machine would it demanded not only your patience but hippocampal acuity as well. It's these little details that made me fall in love with that game and still to this day I regard it as one of the best JRPGs to ever see the glorious 2000s sunlight.
