I think it's good that it ended up this way not only because I like the charge shot but because it's a mechanic that's easy to ignore as well. You can ignore the slide for movimentation but you'll still be required to pass through narrow passages or dodge certain attacks. But the charge shot is almost completely ignorable, few enemies only take damage from the charge shot instead lemons and there's special weapons for these too, forced weapon usage exists since MM2. They could've created a mechanic that's way more intrusive than the charge shot down the line if it didn't happen and stick around.
