This is the right attitude. Whether you're playing the exact optimal version of a game probably won't have a massive effect on whether you like it or not, and if you do like it then learning the differences between each version can be its own type of fun. I've played "better" versions and still enjoy the DQ games on NES and GBC. Only the most recent remakes have enough differences or problems that I'd seriously recommend against playing them first.
