"I should have built a fort" edition

The Wheel has turned once again

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 3400 units, 1100 spells and 400 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them. It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

>>569055609
Yeah, we're on our 5th MP game now.
>how much of a difference does playing against humans feel
I wouldn't know since I never played out a full game vs the AI, but it's tense and takes a lot of planning all the way to the last turn.
>>
>>569055609
We're just a few turns away from finishing a game unless there's many more surprises. I fear the whore stole the game along with my snake.
Stay tuned and hop into the next one.

>how much of a difference playing with humans
It's a game about backstabbing. You can't really make pacts with the AI.
You can't really make pacts with players either because you know that shit ain't holding up past the first chance either of you get to shove a ritual up each other's ass, but it's the intention what counts. Also the shittalking.
The AI does a much better job at feeling like it knows how to play the game than Dominion's AI does but ultimately it's also rather braindead. The game is just a lot tighter and most decisions carry some weight and impact, so there's less room for it to do overly stupid stuff. But it can't really play long term or theorycraft about what someone might be trying to do.
MP recommended, it's fun

>>
>>569068596
As things are right now, if we weren't playing the beta, even after losing the Gorgon titan I could still have capture Pandemonium with the giant walking castle and my native legion.
Right now there's an opposing beefed up legion supporting the city. I could still win, but it'd take quite long. Not sure I can get it done before the game ends.
Definitely harder than before, as long as someone is willing to help defend it.

It's not a major expansion, just a patch. Couple small balance things, couple more things in the bazaar.
Only three big changes have struck out to me:
>rift event
2 contiguous hexes turn into a ravine. Legions on top don't instantly die but they can get a lot of damage. Honestly not the strongest thing, but it's fun, and a nice reason not to bunch legions up by default.
>slag tokens
Trash that accumulates in your vault if you gather tribute with negative tribute quality. Barely noticeable to be honest. The vault is large enough and you can throw slag in for free whenever you buy something, so it's only a problem if you try to mass gather your way from an empty vault to a full one.
>non-excommunicated legions automatically defend Pandemonium
The only actually powerful change. Pandemonium left alone is still easy to slap around, but just one or two supporting legions can really make it hard to capture the city.

I like it, good patch so far. No idea why the fuck they're taking so long to release it properly, though. Guess they're working on balance or something

I played Man a lot as a noob and I feel bad because they seem kinda annoying to deal with in both ages they appear even though I definitely didn't play them because I thought they were meta. In fact everyone always called them mid but I'm sure they're much better now that their cav is sacred and their unicorns are their own super charged unit too
>>
>>569090317
Heavy cav is amazing
>>
>>569090317
MA Man got an absolutely wild glow up going from 5 to 6, along with all nations with great heavy/sacred cav (MA Marignon, MA Ulm, etc)
One of those nations now you just recruit as many as you can each turn, put them in a line set to 'attack read', and click on someone. If that somehow gets countered, start using your nations unique communion (songs) and blow anyone else away with poison spam. Not a bad idea to take PR5 as a bless because it's very easy to cast Breath of the Dragon, Foul Vapours, etc.
>>
>>569085112
Sometimes it's nice to hand out death gems and get a lot of casts of horde of skellies right at the start of battle.

I thought too many of the factions had heavy death access. Didn't want it to become a sausage fest of skelly spam. So I nerfed normal horde of skellies, and gave each undead faction their own buffed version.

Whereas death factions that don't have much of an undead theme (EG dark elves) got death spells more in line with their theme (EG evocations)

If I have Regen bless and a sacred thug casting personal regen, what will happen? do I get +20% regen?
>>
>>569153675
Regen from different sources stack yes.
So you can stack bless + ring of regen + regen spell buff + innate regen on chassis (like a troll). Bless + ring of regen = 20% regen
Regen spell buffs don't stack with themselves though, you can't do personal regen + army regen for example
>>
Would Stygian Skin bless stack with innate invulnerability like for example Athel Lorens Wild Riders?
>>
>>569158898
Nope. Invulnerability is a form of protection. So it doesn’t stack unless it says +10 or something similar.

Plot twist of the game, Murmur surges ahead like 180 points after winning three duels in the same turn with the exact same strategy and sets himself at the front two turns before the end

How is that a glow-up? They now die to the first MR-check spell (OK, Ulmites did that anyway, but now even more so). MA Man is so strong precisely because the unicorns don't do that.
>>
>>569163757
Because you can slam 100 Chalices/Black Knights into your neighbor well before they could ever even think of casting Rigor Mortis.
Yeah it falls off by midgame, but by that point you should have already taken all the required thrones. Whose going to stop your murder line?
>>
>>569163757

They used to do that anyway. Now they take 2 mr spells to kill instead of 1 at the very least.

I have perfected the dueling technique by giving my praetor a steel katana folded 1000 times If you didnt know: you can swap dueling moves mid duel. I had skulls and snake moves only but swapped snake out for an orb move as a surprise
>>
>>569182156
Wut
>>
>>569185063
When you have a manuscript available and charisma 4, you can swap out a praetor's dueling move for the manuscript you have in your inventory. Charisma 4 allows you to do it to any type instead of the one it currently is (snake, skull, orb)
>>
File: soliuminfernum duel 1.jpg (364 KB, 2202x1064)

When the duel starts (when you bribe and choose the move) let's say you select the move in slot 2 and the same turn invoke that manuscript on slot 2, it will replace the slot 2 move with the new one during the duel.

The orb move in this image used to be a snake move. I bought this praetor specifically because it only had two slots and they were both skulls and snakes so I could use this orb card as a mind game

How many soulless would a level 3 priest have to raise per turn before you would consider it a worthy use of a turn?
>>
>>569194572
Depends if my holy 3 has anything better to do, and if I get recruitable holy 3s.
24 could be ok if I have army wide buffs and I jut need bodies in front of mages
>>
>>569194874
>army wide buffs
Newbie here, how would you buff a soulless? I can see skeletons and ghouls being useful but soulless look completely useless to me. I've also read about the HP rout thing... wouldn't large masses of soulless be counterproductive? They've got lots of HP
>>
>>569198102
Fog Warriors or Army of lead/gold.
Elemental resists to absorb evocations
>>
>>569198102
Fog warriors + army of lead but really their only use is evo bait
>>
>>569198102
For some battle strats you just need a fight to go long enough for you to win.
Things like fear spam and wailing winds, or foul vapors or rigor mortis just need a bunch of hp in front of your real troops/mages to survive long enough
>>
>>569194572
soulless aren't even that bad anymore with sloops now that they get a second attack for more harass penalty desu. more hp than longdead means they sit there for longer with protection buffs which is really all undead are meant to do anyway

Is the slowing weapon bless just BS, or can it actually be helpful? On Sacred Cav for example, edging up the high Def value even a bit more and maybe, through slowing, get your own units to strike first?
>>
>>569256317
I think it's situationally good for some nations. Not the worst weapons bless.
Sacred cav would be a good choice for it, provided you don't need them to actually hit harder with those bless points. I feel like it messes up giants the most, since they already struggle with attack density and sometimes poor attack values.
Could be interesting on sacred archers, causing enemy lines to break up before meeting your line, but I haven't tested that at all, and usually archer blesses underwhelm.
Not the best, not the worst
>>
>>569256848
do you know what it means that slowed units "strike half as often" do they loose a attack every other round?

>do they loose a attack every other round?
Thats what I think it is yeah.
>>
>>569258539

>>
>>569258745
The main problem with it, other than being an awkward price for an incarnate, is that you need to break through defense to get a hit, and the enemy gets an mr roll to resist it too. So it can be a bit inconsistent to apply against enemy elites.
>>
>>569259082
ohhhh, yeah, good point! might work well only against PD or other chaff where one wouldnt need it anyways...

How do you expand in the first five turns in LA without an awake expander? I tried Ulm, Erytheia, and Pangaea, and on all of them it's a 50/50 whether I just get shit on by heavy cav when trying to take the cap circle unless I spend the first three turns recruiting. If I do that though I end up with like 8 provinces by turn 12. Once i have the first couple of provinces and have more resources I can get by, but unless I get a lucky spawn (lmao) those first ones are such a pain in the ass
>>
>>569269701

Erytheia just needs an awake expander, their troops are awful.
With Pan you want to max hammers and spam Grove Guard, they're the best scales troop in the age after Calystri Senatorial Guard. You'll want to use some of your starting army as lance catchers but GG are great at rolling everything afterward.
LA Ulm has arguably the best expansion in the game if you take a stygian skin/fire shield/enchanted blood bless. Hochmeisters can legit solo thug expand with that which means you can spam out 3 expansion parties a turn. 40 provs in testing is very real.
