Confusion was too inconsistent because it doesn't always land, is sometimes removed by attacks and requires a speed tuned party to be more reliable. Mages were very valuable for me for malefic wind and they have to do something when not stripping buffs. Unless you have invested into damage spells on your mage(s), malefic wind is highest damage but dalto is a close second and also gives you a little more action advantage as well when facing a single enemy, even if they have high resistance to chill. The predictability of slow/chrono/freeze also allow you to use MC when the giant is super delayed and then defend just before their turn if you're afraid of getting one-shot.I guess your milage may wary, but it's a fight that basically requires dispel. Which means mage or ninja. But ninjas are rarer and harder to level and equip so I'd figure most people would at least have a mage to use. And for me that was the best use of mages that doesn't require investment and is the least likely to screw you over if you have bad luck in the fight.
