Sonic works best when we see him from everyone else's perspective, and it's everyone else who fills the "protagonist" role in the story instead of him. Sonic should be the aspirational figure Tails looks up to, and the unattainable love interest for Amy, and the unbeatable rival for Knuckles, all while showcasing Tails, Amy & Knuckles all growing in-response to that. Sonic should be the force that inspires you to do the impossible, see the invisible, touch the untouchable, and break the unbreakable. And that works best when the characters who were designed to do exactly that are the ones we're seeing the story through.

The Emeralds seem to do different things depending on the plot (like time travel in 06) and the Storybook games kinda prove that Modern Sonic doesn't really need them for the climatic transformation he undergoes at the end of the game.
