Sonic, Tails & Amy. These three characters define the very core of the franchise on the most fundamental level. SONIC is the cool mascot we're meant to aspire to and admire. Tails exists as a reflection of that, he is US as the fans who look up to Sonic. Amy also reflects this, as the girl who is madly in love with Sonic. But Sonic doesn't actively / openly reciprocate Amy's advances even if he's implied to return the feelings deep down, and Tails is often stuck in the sidekick role to Sonic and never really breaks out of that outside of the Adventure games. What this tells us is that we are meant to be in perpetual awe over how cool Sonic is. This is the most important thing in the franchise. Sonic is unfathomably cool. Cooler than anything or anyone. He is the coolest. Can Tails ever hope of being like or even surpassing Sonic? Does Amy have any hope of ever truly winning Sonic's heart? Given Sonic's static, eternal nature as our #1 cool mascot, ... who can say? All that truly matters is that we see Sonic from the perspective of Tails & Amy. And that any and all rivals (Metal, Knuckles, Shadow, Blaze, Silver, Jet...) could never even conceive of holding a candle to Sonic the Hedgehog any day of the week. Eggman is a big old buffoon for trying to challenge Sonic. ...But is this good enough? Is this what any of us truly want out of Sonic? Is this what drew any of us to Sonic? Or to any of these characters? Is this what actually makes Sonic cool?
