I wonder what it would feel like to put your consciousness into a female shell. I don't even mean it from a tranny perspective, I mean like, imagine going your whole life as a dude and then suddenly you're in a female body with female anatomy, female lack of strength, female social expectations, etc. It would be very weird and take a lot of getting used to.

I just bought the game after 10hours, and i then understood i dont like the combat. It has the same problems as ArcRaiders. The game punishes you twice for getting ambushed, and its impossible to bounce back from one.
Hunt Showdown is still the king, and handles the damage and healing so much better.
Now i just have to hope i get my money back.
>>
>take a couple Ls
>load into perimeter free kit with crew for a chill run to end the night

I feel kind bad about this, anons.
>>
>>569874964
Timid people are just free2players, fuck em they ain't coming back
>>
>>569874874
People will complain about how punishing "getting ambushed" is but wont actively try to prevent being ambushed.

Its like walking down a dark alley at night in a dangerous city and saying
>"WOOOWWW, IM GETTING FUCKING MUGGED THIS SUCKS"

Rather than just being safer.
>>
>>569875127
The problem is the same as in Arc, there are not enough tells if someone is moving in what part of the map. The guns don't make so much sound either. Hunt Showdown does this perfectly, as there's more depth in gun sounds, numerous 'sound traps,' and overall better cues of things, map reading is a skill in that game you cannot find here.
>>
Aside from the whole "anomaly is devouring the souls of colonists" thing and the wild life being literal antibodies against humans, Tau Ceti IV is a pretty comfy place.

I've seen game footage from early development, there perimeter had actual trees, not just dead stumps. It looked pretty nice.

Because this is why games like these have 'soundtraps' like in Hunt. People have to actively make decisions do they want to make noise or do a detour/spend resources/move more slowly around them. Its so fucking great system in Hunt, and i was hoping to see it here, especially with such low TTK.
>>
>>569876803

>>569877373
every character in overwatch has different animations because they dont interact with the environment (except like genji). theres no animation of orisa or hamster interacting with a terminal, reloading a rifle or performing a takedown. EVERY shell in marathon shares those animations just like in every other shooter of that type.

its why all warframes in warframe are humanoid.
>>
>>569877261
Marathons animations are also all from D2 lmao

And something more active where you HAVE TO fight:
>Zombie has gun in his hand that goes off because you were too slow
>Zombie drops a lantern that cascades into a explosive barrel
>Someone uses piercing weapon to Immolator
>You aggro a Wasp lady

Just some on top of my head, surely i forgot something. Of course, you can just sit in the far corner of the map and never engage with anyone, but the point of these systems is to give 'tells' where people are making ambushing not so easy.

I do wonder if any of the codexs have any hints, now that we know Recon and Sentinel are either modified or made for UESC use first before runners got their hands on them we could very well see another shell based off of UESC
We also know NOONA is creating new shells with that symbiote too.

Anyone know who that voice we hear is when we use the radars on Night Marsh? They talk directly to us when we either turn on the radar or we go to the loot cache.

i dont think i like the skilltree. theres basically no reason not to max out agi, end and str, the support tree is kinda lame and the resistance tree is just not worth it unless you have the first three maxxed out. your stats should be completely tied to your implants.
>>
>>569888603
It seems like just not putting anything in support and picking if you like strength or recharge more is the only real element of choice here. Next season they should increase the stat increase the further you get in but reduce it from 50 levels to like 35.

I'm mixed with it.
I'm in the miniority with this opinion but a lot of the things that *could* make shells fun to use are all tied to higher-tiered cores and to a lesser extent some implants and what effects they can do.
They should put back these increases how they were S1 but turn the Cradle into a means to try out shell cores at a lower strength to mix things up a bit.

I just hope they don't change things so drastically every season, like a poormans Path of Exile; fucking hate that because sometimes PoE seasons release incredible gameplay loops or abilities and then we never see them again.

>>
>>569893074
Which one?
>>
>>569891470
They could just go away with cores, introduce more mats, and you could customise your Shell with abilities, kinda like Cradle.
So for example, 'sass would get
>faster movement when crouching
>faster movement when camo is active

>longer smoke duration
or
>longer camo duration

>increased melee damage when stealthed or in smoke
or
>camo at cost of heat when crouching and still or still and aiming down sights

No more need for core swaps and such, and Shells get to be way more fun after most of the upgrades. Granted, having two top tier improvements would be a bit OP, so have just one.

>have I cleared that POI?
>how long has it been since the match started?
Anon, if it’s been more than 5 minutes you have to assume that any POI has a team in it. Furthermore, if you learn the player spawns you can approximate where they are and where they can go.
Example: you are at North Relay. If you assume pure aggression, within 5 minutes a team spawning in Hauler can show up, soon followed by a team spawning near Station. If you spend 10 minutes sucking your dick in North Relay for no discernible purpose, now you have to account for the fact that teams may have already looted some POIs and are moving around the map or are camping their POIs. Now play smart. Are you worried abou rats crouching in a corner? Wait for UESC to reinforce that location and force them to move. Nothing is forcing you to engage with an extremely risky POI. This is not rocket science. It is very easy to get good at this game, if you are able to exercise self-control.

They should leave the sponsored survival mode and rotate the maps for it weekly. While working on improving it instead of trying to force people who enjoyed the mode and likely drew the new blood in because of said mode instead of trying to force them to suffer in the shitshow that is the current game. At least that way the loot economy still flows if someone royally fucks up to bots or gets bodied by a rook in the pvp-lite mode.

I joined because a friend recommended it.

I like the game, I liked the graphics and sound design. Sadly though its a game for sociopaths; the kind of people who will camp by an exfil beacon for literally 15 minutes doing nothing so they can murder-steal a squads stuff at the last minute. Practically impossible to stop a well laid ambush as good guns are pretty much one-hit kills.

Marathon is basically an elaborate hide and seek shooter, where the first person who gets seen gets murdered. Basically COD Modern Warfare in a new skin. If you like that type of gameplay, its 10/10 and best in class.

For a lot of people, its offputting. I was raised on the Unreal Tournament / Quake 2&3 multiplayer that relies on movement, speed and skill in FPS games, rather than hide and seek ironsight aiming ambush killing. I also wish there was a deathmatch practice mode; you can play like an hour of the game and only get experience from a 30 second fire fight where you get one-shotted.

I am aware I am a dying target customer in the gaming industry.
>>
>>569906880
This. Need PVP arena for practice.

>>569909674
>>569906880
As someone who sucks at the PVP, a good PVP mode that lets you respawn in a few seconds instead of having to
>go through run report
>back to main menu
>select zone
>select gear
>match
>wait 5-10m to match and load
would be a fucking godsend. Being able to get more hands on time with the combat would help a ton.
>>
>>569909484
To be fair even Tarkov has an arena mode that's just TDM and shit like that with a healthy sub-population from the main game. There's no reason Bungie couldn't do something like that, if its framed appropriately.

Yeah I'd agree with this. Trios gives you more of a fighting chance on combat against big groups of enemies and the harder objectives, but it does mean you're up against more people, and if your teammates aren't cooperative then you're not likely to get what you want done unless you're lucky.
Solo is good for those missions you want to focus on where you're less concerned about loot (or even extraction).

>>569916253
Of course it’s dogshit, the PvE in this game fucking blows, nothing about shooting UESC feels good or entertaining, it’s just a chore that can escalate into an outright nuisance. If you want PvE you can play some 50 other games and have more fun.
It’s getting some degree of praise and I’m sure bungies metrics will tell them it’s popular but the majority are only running it because the loot is too free.
If they had any idea what they were doing they would have axed grey sponsor kits totally and instead included the sponsored kit mode they introduced last season that got nothing but praise.

I knew Iw asnt the only one who thinks of Metal Gear when i play Marathon. Much of its artstyle, especially the giant brightly colored buildings, remind me strong of The Phantom Pain and that game also has bright color coded boxes that you collect too and weapons with bright colors too (ie the tranq guns)
>>
>>569872668
>even with the free weekend we're struggling to attract players (mind you, the download is only like 25GB)
I love the gameplay and thematic of Marathon but I think we need to be honest about where the game's at right now. Its still too hardcore and unfriendly to people who haven't been playing FPS games constantly for the last 20 years. I don't even know how they can solve that without reworking Marathon to the point where its not even an extraction shooter anymore. But at that point why even continue development? Not sure where Bungie goes from here now that they're 'all in' on Marathon but S3 is going to be do or die imo.

They already decided on reworking the game up to the one year anniversary (season 5). Depending on the results of this season's several experiments they will supposedly lock in a direction for season 3 and 4 with season 5 finalizing the rework and I'll bet they're also gonna release the game as free to play by then as a relaunch and that's gonna be the actual do or die moment for the game.

Funnily enough if they go through with this rework they will get closer to Christopher Barret's original vision for the game which was basically a lite-mmo with extraction elements.

i'm just gonna be blunt and say that no amount of reworks to the core experience will bring in the masses. If the game's difficulty and onboarding experience were the primary reasons for the game's underperformance then that'd be represented in the CCU; high numbers initially followed by a large drop off. Instead, people aren't really showing up to play it even when it's free.

The key inescapable issue is the art style. The extraction/survival audience and the wider mainstream FPS audience both have one thing in common - they have a very strong modern military shooters. Doesn't matter how noob friendly Marathon gets, CoD kids and Tarkovfags alike simply do not want to shoot 3D printed plastic guns at 3D printed plastic bots in 3d printed plastic buildings. The game just fundamentally does not appeal to the majority of its target audience.

This is true. The art style is weird and abstract and it required to accept it in order to gel with it. Even if people were open-minded to that kind of thing, they would still prefer to time-sink in already established modern military shooter and this always been true for video games. There is nothing more normie appealing and broad strokes than realistic military themes.

I don't necessarily think that's the case.
I personally think the skill ceiling is way to hard right off the bat and the beginner tutorial is atrocious to boot. Fuck, Tarkov has a safety pocket and this doesn't.
All we can hope is that there's a strong enough, stable enough, autistic enough niche community to keep it afloat so it can go the route of Fallout 76 or Sea of Thieves.
Even in Season 2 the game is bare bones

I will agree with you on one thing though. Perimeter is a MISERABLE map to start people off on. It's so fucking boring visually and large portions are of neutral grey stone and rock where it constantly rains with hazy atmospheric vibes - people never believe it but being a art major/color theory nerd you never want to onboard and have a starting map as miserable as Perimeter is with that color pallete and atmosphere combination, especially with a hardcore genre like this.
>Weather that constantly makes you sleepy
>Most of the land going from POI to POI is murkey, greens, greys, and darker browns
>Hauler is a popular place to go and get one-tapped
All the makings of turning off any fucking new players to the game

Outpost, visually is way more engaging and colorful and you have those firestorms off and on that is a pop of color and means to retreat inside. All the rooms are yellows, oranges, and reds with splashes of aquas, greens, and blues with the museum and side-rooms of seagreens along with engaging areas like the cafeteria.
Night Marsh is easy too, dark, forboding, void of color and only your fear if any and what lies in the dark with beautifully jarring, though muted colors of the Anomaly criss-crossing the middle of the zone for a backdrop of color with the ever present wisp tower of anomaly juice at the tower ontop of Complex

You don't need to actively realize these things, your subconscious does though

It's not like bungie fans are just getting bored of bungie games

>It's so fucking boring visually and large portions are of neutral grey stone and rock where it constantly rains with hazy atmospheric vibes
There's so many analogues to this environment on earth that are beautiful and unique, how did they end up with a muddy cow pasture flanked by megascan rocks.

build drone factories to recon the area, antenna relays to communicate with ships for supplies, supply drop pads, algae farms to grow food, drive a hauler to build data wall networks

I've said it before in these threads, it should have been a space colony management game. Imagine all the vehicles and people walking around doing stuff.
>>
>>569924772
at this point I'd be worried about bungie getting canned before the end of 2027. Whoever made the decision to completely axe Destiny 2 is probably going to get fired after tomorrow's expected debacle. Marathon should have been a niche, side game developed with a low budget for the relatively small community of us that enjoy hardcore pvp games. I have no idea why Bungie is trying to make Marathon their 'main' game. That is a massive mistake. I can acknowledge that Marathon is never going to be mainstream or popular enough to fund a studio of 600+ fucking people. Destiny is casual enough to do that. There's no reason why they can't have both games under development at once, especially since Marathon at this point is probably lower upkeep.

The anomalies started before UESC arrived.
The colonists arrived, then spent anywhere between 30 to 35 years - upwards to 40 years on their own dealing with anomaly nonsense ontop of dealing with the Pfhor. The Security Troops (ones like we played as in the original trilogy fought off the Pfhor once and then five years later they arrived and killed them all and abducted a large portion of the colony.
Leading up to this the colonists ran out of food and realized that they can't eat the food from Tau Ceti so they started crossbreeding it with their own genetics from animals and insects from Earth - for a small while they were fine but people either died, started to hear voices and go insane, or turn into mushrooms like that one Doctor on Perimeter. All the makings of what occured in Pathways into Darkness which as of right now, canonically is a prequel to the initial trilogy
In it we learn that a W'rkncacnter is sleeping inside Earth and an advance race of aliens, not the Pfhor (cant recall thier name atm) told Bill Clinton and his White House. We are then tasked with nuking the sleeping cosmic horror to make it go back to sleep -- as it wakes up, from this game, people, human start to go insane and morph into crazy fucking shit - the same MO we're seeing on Tau Ceti

The UESC don't arrive until HUNDRED years later after the colony went quite (thats how long it took for them to arrive) then after the UESC arrived the factions we have NOW arrived 25 year later

We are here.

As a side-bar
If Sony decides to stubbornly double-down on supporting Marathon for the forseeable future they could easily make a Single-Player set during the time the Pfhor invaded or we can play as a UESC Bot when the UESC arrived.
They could also go a different route and have PvE related to us trying to put the fucking cosmic horror god back to sleep. In Pathways into Darkness humans started to hear whispers and mutate telling them to dig further into the earths core to wake up the sleeping god.
In Nu-Marathon 2026 there are codex entries from Perimeter where people are hearing their deceased loved ones, some asking them to start digging into the ground
On Outpost, looking at the map in-game, on the far-right corner of the map, go to the dock (its a starting position too) look out to the horizon and even closer, you can barely make them out but there are pyramids in the distance, like the one from Pathways into Darkness built for the W'rkncacnter gotta way for the lightening to strike near you and off the horizon and you can see them

We are so fucked.

Legitimately it's my belief that the only major issue with the artstyle is that most of the shells just do not look great and it's an easy target for people to latch on to and say is DEI wokeslop to dismiss the game
Had they at least shown off Thief primarily in earlier promotional material instead of Vandal there would be a way different general public opinion. Sentinel is easily the strongest design. Just faceless operator looking guy always just flat out looks cool and if the shells look more like that than Destroyer & Recon with their exposed mouths, Assassin with his lightskin bisexual look, or Triage straight up being robot black man then it'd be much easier for people to stand behind the game because the player characters look cool
I realize the shells having human faces is probably strongly intended for the whole existential aspect of the game, but it was just a misstep with so many aspects of this game

That would be worst case. Not because D3 gets made but because a single year is not nearly enough to lay the groundwork for a new narrative and make all new assets.

there's a chance bungie doesn't survive at the end of the year.

free week was marathon's chance at attracting a wider audience, and no one gave a shit.
there *MIGHT* be a chance with monument of triumph update tomorrow, but the people have to show up, and even if they DO show up, they then have to believe the same company that was willing to kill spiderman instead of receiving freem disney money for showing a character for 5 minutes on screen will again come around to logic and reason.

bungie will be lucky if they make it to 2027. dont know what happens to d1 and d2 servers, and i dont have a clue what they will do with marathon. tomorrow interesting, dont get your hopes up.
>>
>>569941749
even if 100k people logged onto destiny tomorrow Bungie is not working on it anymore. They've already made that very clear. There is zero hope and zero chance. Marathon not retaining nearly any of the free weekers is the final nail in the coffin. We're down 9k from the same time yesterday. We're gonna be below 20k peaks next week again.
>>
>>569941960
>100k people
its likely to be over 200k peak. I don't get why bungie is so intent on going down with the marathon ship. Marathon is going to be sub 10k active playercount by next week....again.

That guy is being unrealistic. There is 30k people on right now (more than marathon lol) and realistically, we will probably be seeing numbers in the 70-100k range. There's no way it will be 200k. And then the population will probably rapidly decline as everyone remembers why they left and thats its pointless to grind when nothing new is coming

parasitic existence, one can't survive without the other. I've seen people talking about updates to marathon after this to keep the game going or more successful, but it's not making money RIGHT NOW. the dev cycle is in a weird place and sony is looking for it to be a profit. there's even a chance, though small, that IF the d2 update tomorrow soars in playercount and holds it for...5 days, that sony just gets pissed and closes the entire studio down before they lose more money.

this situation is fucked.
>>
>>569942469
200k players online across console and PC is very realistic. You have to remember Destiny is very popular on console, whereas Marathon is not. Marathon is very much primarily a PC game, Destiny is much more evenly split.

>Marathon turned into Destiny I'd just stop playing
I mean what do you want Bungie to do at this point. Seriously, if you were Bungie how would you proceed? Marathon is a good game in its niche but that niche is so, so particular that it cannot support a studio of 100 developers, much less the 500+ team that Bungie employs. Do you lay off staff and go through ANOTHER drama-filled shitshow and give Marathon one update per year? Or do you rework the game to try to make it appeal to more players? The game is going to struggle to break 10k active players after f2p week ends dude, Bungie and Sony has to do something. Even people who love the game know this shit isn't sustainable.

biggest problem with d2 is that is was never meant to be updated for as long as it has been. The original plan from Activision was to create a new Destiny game every 3-4 years. After Bungie bought themselves out, they decided to try to keep updating Destiny 2. However they ran into massive storage problems because, again, the game was not designed to have this much content in it. Hence why sunsetting became a thing. If they didn't do sunsetting the game would be well over 300gb at this point.

Marathon is competing with Hunt Showdown right now for player numbers. While having a much larger developer team and being F2P right now. The game is doomed unless Sony gives them a year to course correct and hope for a miracle.

Unfortunately Bungie's goodwill has long since blown away with years of Destiny 2 mismanagement and I really don't see how Marathon ever becomes successful.

>Marathon May Never Be Popular, And That’s Why It’s So Good
>Marathon is niche and strange, and that should earn our kudos, not our ire.
>By Grace Benfell on June 7, 2026 at 1:04PM PDT
https://www.gamespot.com/articles/marathon-may-never-be-popular-and-thats-why-its-so-good/

>Marathon is burdened with the past. Its twin namesakes, the titular colony ship and the trilogy of classic boomer shooters for the Apple Macintosh, are both corpses plundered for new life. The protagonists of this new, rebooted game are scavengers, quite literally picking over the bones of what came before.

>This fact has colored the reception of Marathon from its very first announcement. The fact that Marathon was set to be a pure live-service game, with no single-player component, was a blow to franchise fans. Sony’s acquisition of Bungie fueled speculation. Was Marathon a corporate-mandated multiplayer game?

>Just a couple months after release, the announcement of Destiny 2’s final update, as well as the revelation that Bungie had no “Destiny 3” or any other tentpole project waiting in the wings, have put Marathon in a difficult and unfair position. But part of the skepticism about the game exists because Marathon, unlike every Bungie game since Halo: Combat Evolved, is not a game expertly tuned for mass-market success. Instead, it is something altogether stranger and more exciting.

>Perhaps the best way to articulate this shift is the difference in themes. In Destiny and its sequel, the player character is special. She is a warrior of light, one of the absolute guardians of humanity. She gathers legendary weapons that do not tarnish or vanish. She charts new worlds, venturing boldly into fights with gods and demons alike.
>>
>>569949048
>In Marathon, the player character is nobody: a floating consciousness uploaded into readily disposable bodies. She’s a freelancer for massive corporations, which freely experiment with her, risking her well-being for ever-slimmer margins of profit. Even the Compiler, the raid boss that presents one of the new game’s most daunting challenges, is a regularly encountered foe in the original trilogy.

>In Destiny, even in the competitive Crucible modes, the player is a key part of an organization that works together. In Marathon, she is just one soldier on the edge of space, fighting her own kind to tick down a debt she can never fully pay.

>But these differences go beyond Marathon’s writing, and into the brass tacks of how it feels to play; it is friction-forward in a way multiplayer games at its budget and scale rarely are. In contrast to the nigh-infinite vaults of Destiny 2, Marathon players have limited space to store their goods. They can horde, but eventually, if they want more, they have to stake some of their hard-worn gear. With each season, like in other extraction shooters like Escape From Tarkov, each player’s gear fully resets. Absolutely nothing is permanent. The only thing that any player can carry from season to season, and match to match, is what they have learned. This includes the regular skills of any first-person shooter: what guns suit a particular playstyle, where is best to flank enemies, find cover, or avoid the sight lines of enemy snipers.

>But Marathon’s sprawling maps make the simple act of learning more difficult than it might appear. For one, the alien world of Tau Ceti IV is awash with unfamiliar sounds. Players opening loot-laden locked rooms, starting specific events, gaining the attention of patrolling robots, even simply dying–each of these things carries with it a unique sound cue. Learning what each sound means and how to get in position in relation to it is its own battle.
>>
>>569949048
>>569949189
>A lot of the discourse around Marathon has posited essentially one of two things about it: that it is a money-grubbing cash-in on a popular trend, or that it fails at being a mainstream title at the scale of Destiny 2.The graveyard of live-service games like Highguard and Concord have prompted constant comparison. But Marathon is not a shotgun blast, trying for the broadest possible appeal; it is a knife’s edge, cutting away at a well-defined niche.

>Take the Compiler, the game’s ultimate PvE challenge. To get there, players must successfully raid each of the Cryo Archive map’s six vaults and exfil with their goods intact, which they will need special keys to attempt in the first place. After doing so, they must use a separate key to activate a set of challenges, which will lead to the boss room. These things would be significant time investments in any game, but in Marathon, the threat of an ambush by other players is constant, making a team lose both progress and loot in a single fiery enchange.

>In contrast, a casual Destiny player could “beat” the game, at least in the sense of completing its many campaigns, without spending hundreds of hours on it. With a little dedication, she could even see some endgame bosses. Marathon demands more. If not more time, at least more skill.
>>
>>569949048
>>569949189
>>569949361
>Still, Marathon has become more approachable over its first season. Mercy kits let players revive their foes, offering another way to negotiate between enemy squads. Bungie added cheap ways to get back up when down, making it harder for runs to end thanks to enemy robots or far-off sniper shots. Season 2 has more of those changes in store. The Cradle, a brand-new stat system, lets runners tune their character’s strengths and weaknesses without looting or buying items. Upgrades, which players buy with a combo of cold, hard cash earned on runs and materials robbed from Tau Ceti, now can be purchased for less. But these changes have all maintained the heart of Marathon’s eerie, threatening landscape.

>For example, take the “Sponsored Survival” experimental mode just added to the game. In this mode, only one squad enters the “Night Marsh” map, giving them time to loot without (player) inference. They must take free equipment, meaning they cannot carry any loot from their vaults to lose or use in the match. However, Rooks, the lone scavenger players who propagate in the middle of matches, all enter the map just a few minutes later. And unlike other Marathon modes, there is only one place to extract at the end of the match. If the lone team or any of the rooks make it to the end, they can all leave together–or test their might in a hail of gunfire. It makes looting easier; but extraction more targeted.
>>
>>569949048
>>569949189
>>569949361
>>569949495
>And this all takes place on Night Marsh, which drenches a familiar location in darkness. In most video game nights, the world takes on the hue of dusk. It’s sort of dark, but everything you need to see is still visible. In Marathon, the night is pitch black, with occasional lights illuminating only select sections of the map. Additionally, the player’s eyes and ears will trick her. Ghostly figures can wander by, vanishing as soon as they appear. Shouts and screams will emerge from the dark, seemingly without source. If speculation is correct, there are fewer enemy players to be found than on the more standard “Dire Marsh” map. But even so, the world holds threat.

>These might all sound like reasons not to engage, but all these things combine to make something with genuine mystery and awe. Marathon’s most game-changing loot and its most profound challenges might be locked away, but anyone can start to get the picture from their very first match. The electronic hum of the starting music. The terror of enemy footsteps. The thrill of a well-timed attack. Deciding not to extract, because there is still loot waiting to be found, and dying from greed. Or besting an enemy team’s ambush through guile and speed.

>Within Marathon’s nigh-endless deaths and rebirths, there is the rush of life. It is stressful, demanding, and by definition “not for everyone,” but that’s true of most things that are worth your time.
