Following the African coastline from one port to another is not difficult. Island hopping and finding ports in the Dodecanese islands is not difficult and finding RAF Luqa starting from south east Sicily does not require anyone to cheat provided the sortie is flown at a real;istic altitude and not a an altitude appropriate to primary trainers.

I gotta say. I kinda take it back after actually playing the game. The photogrammetry is actually game changing. Exploring Cities I've been to and recognizing individual buildings and street corners is not something I ever thought I be able to do in a game. It's insane.
And the graphics have passed a tipping point where my IRL vfr instincts start to take over and I can trim and fly without thinking about it.

If sims can at least do this now, I may actually have to buy a sim rig now.
I just wish the monetization and user experience of modern sims were not so slop/skinner-box tier.
>>
>>570101864
Have you come from 2020 or straight into 24?
>>
>>570103210
Straight into 24. Other than toying with some DCS modules a while back this is the first sim I've tried since XP11 around its release.
>>
>>570086834
and why is it the standard? because they forced you to log in to install half-life 2, counter-strike, and skyrim. literally no other reason.

you are THE nigger.
>>
>>570101864
>photogrammetry
Speaking of, I can say after checking it out that the photogrammetry for Munich models the year 2014 despite being released as a city update last year in 2025. Is it that way everywhere?
>>
>>570112259

>>
>>570112259

>>
>>570109090
To be fair, barely any of Steam's modern costumers uses it because they bought Half Life or Counterstrike back in the day, people nowadays simply prefer it over other services because it's at least somewhat user friendly, although of course not perfect.
It still sucks, but it's the lesser evil and having to log in into a quadrillion other services for games you already own on steam is pure cancer.
>>
>>570113923
over 30000 PC games are exclusive to steam
people use it because it's a monopoly
stop being an idiot
>>
>>570114208
No, they use it because unlike other cancerous storefronts they don't try to steal your money constantly or pull bait and switches like EPIC and the like, on top of actually following consumer protection laws.
In the current landscape of PC games storefronts, complaining about Valve and Steam (without being able to bring forth even a single valid criticism beside that they're the best) just makes you look like the retarded contrarian cuck that you are.
>>
>>570117568
they had to be sued to add basic refund options
they pushed in-game gambling and microtransactions before anyone else
they have monopolized many of the most popular games

but god forbid EA try to fire back by making battlefield or mass effect exclusive to their store, or microsoft demand you have an account with them instead of valve

brainless valvedrone double standard
>>
>>570109090
Bait or are you actually that retarded? They are the standard because every single other competitor constantly enshittify their own service to the point that people either just pirate the game, wait for it to be available on Steam or don't play it at all.
>>
>>570117943
EA's refund policy and customer support is infinitely superior to valve's
>>
>>570118046
BWAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAAH Now that's utter bullshit considering EA nuked my account that had Battlefield 3 back in the day in it because I tried to ask for a refund but had used the wrong email to request said refund. When explaining that I had no problem changing the email they closed the ticked and I was left with no refund and no account.
>>
>>570117916
The difference is that we're comparing current Valve, which even with its flaws is still the most pro consumer company in the market. An account with Steam is necessary since you're using their software for game management, meanwhile shit like requiring an EA or Epic account for a videogame that they now released on Steam after the period of exclusivity ended is just pure greediness over wanting to steal your data. Find me a single reason why I should need to register an account with microsoft to play single player DOOM or a GTA game?
>>
>>570118569
>An account with Steam is necessary
no it's not. It's pure DRM. Why is Valve drm good but microsoft drm bad? explain yourself, idiot.

Because you're not buying the game through microsoft, you're not using their platform, you're not giving their your banking information to them.
If my not buying a game through Microsoft, I don't want to make an account to microsoft in order to play said game. They making a drm that forces me to make an account is bad.

A2A is the best. The Comanche may be the greatest flight sim module ever made from the comments, I have the Aerostar and it's awesome. So realistic I did learn to restart my flooded lawn mower engine after learning engine management in the module. Can't go wrong with them.

Blacksquare is also very good although from my limited experience (I only have the Starship) I'd say they are better at system modelling but a notch behind in flight model. Those airplanes are more oriented toward commuting and flying IFR.

The CAS J-3 Cub is excellent if you're looking for a light craft. Don't overlook it if that's your thing.

If you're into warbird everything by Flying Iron is top notch, as well as the Blackbird Zero. Expect complex and unforgiving flight models and full engine management with damage.

There are the Cessna 152 and Robin 140 freeware too. Maybe not as complex as above modules but they are unexciting planes IRL and you can fly them by the number in the sim.

Have fun.

The freeware Robin 140 is made to be flown by the number for IRL practice. It is also not suffering from the shitty propeller strobe effect plaguing the 2024 stock version.
If you don't care about either of these points the default one is fine too.

the lazy part is just taking the same missions from 2020 and pasting them into 2024 career mode, not accounting for the whole "start from any airfield!!!11" gimmick. they should have made a new, dynamic training mission that adapts to your starting field.

Flightfx make good stuff and their Citation X is top tier. The Longitude in the game is probably fine, I haven't flown it myself but it uses Garmin avionics which are done by Working Title, another dev, which is study level. If you're the anon who's new, stick to the in game longitude, the Citation X is more complicated, sexy plane though.

If anything they're just slightly soft. IRL a 172 will nose up sorta hard if you slam full throttle whereas it's a bit slow about it in game.

How do people use their HOTAS setup when using VR?
>>
>>570249165
You can perfectly play flight sim on a gamepad. I did for a couple months.

However if you buy a joystick you'll say "that's so great, how could I do ever without it ?".

If you then add a throttle you'll say "that's so great, how could I do ever without it ?".

If you then add rudder pedals you'll say "that's so great, how could I do ever without it ?".

You don't need them to have fun, and certainly not even to learn the basics of flying. But you'll be happy to have them if/when you get more serious in the hobby and you're ready to shell out more bucks.
>>
>>570249805
I got a simple throttle quadrant that only has a few controls that are located and spaced out in a way that's easy to find in VR
I do everything that's practical in the virtual cockpit with the mouse and only need external buttons for some key things I need to be able to use quickly
But for more complicated setups I guess people just get used to where everything is eventually

the real issue with the 3D pro is the plastic bushing wears out causing the stick to get loose over time

you can 3D print a replacement to get it back to nearly new state but I haven't tried it.

the real strength is it's positively ancient design, meaning every sim and its grandma ever made will support this thing out of the box. it literally ships with profiles for half-life and descent 3.
>>
>>570248739
note on the saitek stuff, the OG Saitek sticks were really good, after getting bought out by madcatz the build quality nosedived, logitech buyout improved things a little bit but not much. the X45 was a lower end offering than the X52 originally, but since they stopped making it before getting sold out it now appears to be better quality.

of course the OG saitek sticks are getting rarer and starting to fail after some 20 years.

the good part is the same as 3D pro, really old but still in production, so software support is near universal

This is wrong. Learning to feel the air around the aircraft is an important skill, and a necessity in flying sailplanes or paragliders.

And MSFS2024 does an honorable job at simulating what can be simulated within a computer sitting on the ground, enough for my meager IRL paragliding skills to transpose and experiencing flights flashbacks.

>>
>>570269457
Yes. You feel even the smallest pressure difference in stable air, so every good updraft brings this uncommon feeling of being strongly pulled up. Like the acceleration in an airliner or a sport car, but vertical.

I've mostly done soaring and I've never entered a strong thermal myself but from what I've heard and seen it can be quite the rollercoaster, if only because it has boundaries, and crossing them will bring strong vertical acceleration changes.

the problem with FS is the camera is dead.
go and play old birds of steel for example, you can easily feel the air through the camera movement, it actually gives me the same sense of a rollercoaster when doing hard maneuvers.

you judge all sims by one game with a particularly poor sense of motion.

actually DCS has a nice dynamic camera too, but it is a special toggleable view like third person or flyby, you have to bind the keys to even find out it exists.

there are some paid addons for flight sim to get a better camera too, but I can't speak to if they work well. birds of steel by far the best sense of flying in any game I've played.

>>
>>570270740
I agree that the camera is shit in MSFS, but it is one thing you get used to.

As for paid modules, I happened to watch a video of someone flying the Caravan with FSRealistic+ a couple days after being inside a real one doing engine runs, and the vibration effects in the sim were way to smooth and regular compared to the real one.. I'd still admit it looked a tad better than the default camera, but it was not more "realistic".

But you can't really compare since IRL you feel the vibrations with your whole body while your brain stabilize the whole picture. It's the same thing with the sense of scale of a cockpit, or the smell of the aircraft, the entrance and exit, the hand-on walkaround... You can find many things that will never match, but the sim is good enough to let you fill the gaps, and good enough to develop skills that you can use both ways, and that's nothing short of awesome.
>>
>>570272204
>same thing with the sense of scale of a cockpit
judging all sims by another shitty thing unique to flight simulator, all default views are midget mode. you have a childs view of the controls so they look bigger. simply adjusting the default camera height fixes it.

I actually haven't much experience with flightsims apart from 2024 (and some DCS a while ago), so I can't comment on whether it is comparable to Birds of Steel.
In my opinion MSFS has a less subtle full screen shaking effect : if you fly a glider you can still get feedback from its attitude change, even if the camera doesn't move within the cockpit.

it's got more combat history than most planes in the game. very widely used bomb truck, recon/FAC and the first SEAD plane

You could start by explaining why do you find pleasure in a game that's just flying from point A to point B.
>>
>>570275372
Because there's a lot more to flying than just going from A to B. Learning the systems in the plane, flying it well, navigation, sightseeing on the way, doing a good approach and landing. It's like saying how do you find pleasure in a racing game if you're just going around a track.
>>
>>570275553

Remember where it is and do it by feel, the more annoying part is remembering all of your procedures without a second monitor.
Personally find flatscreen to be easier than constructing an elaborate system of VR kneeboards to remember shit, but can't deny that flying with the headset is 1000% more immersive.
>>570251442
If you can run it in ultra in 1440p, expect to top out around medium. High if you have a spaceship, but with a noticeable performance hit.
Whatever your resolution, you're going to be pumping at least 2x the pixels to render a display for each eye.
Quad views and foveated rendering help a bit, but there's no real shortcut around needing high-end hardware to comfortably sim in VR. 3080 or 4070 tier is basically the floor.

photogrammetry detail is decided only by terrain lod I'm pretty sure. ultra is 200, high is 100 and medium is 50. assuming 100 is tuned to 1080p, 200 would be perfect for 4K, but 50 would be sub-720, I think 540p.

basically, turn it up to like 70-80. seems to be a good sweet spot between performance and not looking at mushy blobs

about an hour and a half to two hour flight has plenty of things to do on a commercial flight, you are doing the job of at least two people after all.

any more than that tends to just add dead time in cruise inbetween the takeoff and landing though.

3 hours is pushing it, but can be comfy. 4 hours is immensely boring. 8 hours is mentally ill.

Lightning is really loud on the EM spectrum, it was one of the first things we heard after inventing radio. These things are just a more sophisticated version of driving around with an untuned AM radio to listen to strikes. These use VLF, though. Most are also using combined sferic/optical sensors to reduce false positives.
You can precisely locate lightning yourself if you have more than one receiver, too.
blitzortung.org has built a huge network of home-built RF detectors with the TOA method to map strikes around the world in real time like this, it's pretty neat to watch.

Lightning comes with convection, flying through thunderstorms generally not recommended.
Before satellite weather maps were in every cockpit, the only way to avoid storms inflight was to use METAR, the Mk 1 eyeball, or a lightning detector.
Radar also isn't perfect, there are lots of gaps in doppler coverage with imperfect resolution due to terrain obstruction, and airborne systems are susceptible to attenuation and can't really see beyond the first storm.
RF detectors are relatively cheap, really lightweight, and can be installed on GA aircraft that can't carry big airborne radar systems.

It's perfectly natural in my opinion. It's something easy to do with your hands, or to look at while listening to a podcast or lecture. No different than people watching, watching boats on the shore or looking out a train window into the landscape while talking to someone. People think it's a sickness of short attention spans but I think it's different where one is a highly stimulating distraction the other is tranquil. If I'm going to be listening to a three hour lecture anyway why not? speaking of which I've been fiending for a train sim precisely for that reason but my choices are either finnicky 20 year old open source mess or yearly product slop

>Flashpoin Campaigns!
MY MAN! Don't listen to others telling you 'autistic'. Flashpoint Campaigns is actually the best there is and pretty easy to get into, though it's kind of an idle game. Watch some youtube shit, but basically, it's a real commander's game, where you need to plan shit in the initial phase and after that it's just watching things play our and damage control every few minutes, when your turn comes up. All you need to know to be good at this is to understand the intel and command structure, but the interface, despite being kinda meh, gives you that info. Then you make your plan based on the objectives of the mission, and wait like 10 minutes for you turn. After that it's just damage control and arty and airstrikes. It's a very good experience, once you understand that it simulates you being in the commanders position, making a plan then letting in play out if minor adjustments like.
Game doesn't tell you some things like you have a tank unit fighting and they are at 75% ammo, it means their out of SABOT rounds, so they won't be effective vs tanks. It's a cool game, but also something you play in the background. Outside of that, Armored Brigade 1 and 2 might be up your alley, pretty much the same thing but real time. Other? Graviteam Tactics has Cold War DLC.

Forgot to record webms, so here's an old pic. Been hammering AMS2 in the past few days, those new Danielkart's custome FFB file won me over eventurally, but at the end of the day, I still prefer ACC. IDK man, AMS2 excels at Braz Stock Cars, anything else I drive feels like I have no clue how to set up and be fast. Maybe except GT3, but for some reason I just can't make up my mind on what to drive and how... Great game, but to broad in content. F1 stuff rules, but then I'm also shit at F1. Weird, it's like AMS2 is awesome for practice sessions, but despite inferior AI, actual racing fits me better in ACC.

>>

Looks like the Virpil is going to be about $650 (had to convert from eurodollars to goybucks on their non-US website though, so might be a bit off), which is right around where the Moza AB9 is. Or you can go with the AB6 for like $450 or so.
>>
>>570532209
>you know like the one's from the 90's, just a regular cheap stick with a motor?
Didn't see that part. No, you can't get cheapo FFB, because apparently Microsaar has a 100 year copyright on whatever was in the Sidewinder stick. I think used good condition Sidewinders are going for not much less than an AB6 these days anyways, if not more due to the collector's value on that piece of shit.
>>
>>570530506
I bought an AB9 to replace my WARBRD while I waited for them to finally do FFB but I'll get the Atlas and sell the AB-9 now, Virpil's software is so fucking flexible for bindings I want fully back into their ecosystem instead of using their grip on my AB-9.
>>
Keep in mind Virpil doesn't include taxes unlike many sites (at least for EU) so it could be quite a bit more expensive than the Moza.
I would pick it up and sell my Moza, but it seems like its quite a bigger beast, not made to be clamped to a desk.

MSFS does have flocks of seagulls built-in as fauna in some places, but the ones in that screenshot circling a spot I think are from FS Birds
https://www.southoakco.com/fs-birds

They also make an addon called Traffic in Sight that adds small planes, drones, gliders, hang gliders, helicopters, and hot air balloons flying around. They're spawned as terrain rather than normal traffic injection so (1) they don't show up on air traffic displays, as if they lacked ADS-B out, and (2) you collide with them instead of passing through them

The difference between FS and being a pilot is that you don't have biscuit chuckers in the sim. Air hostesses are mattresses for pilots.
>>
>>570570896
I think it's more lack of resources and misdirected development priorities by microsoft than lack of caring. If they straight didn't care I don't think they'd take the financial hit to completely remake botched modules like the 707 instead of just half-assing a patch or resting on the community fix mods.

it's funny to me that the big commercial simulators with the hydraulics and everything are just running heavily customized versions of FSX.

it's even more funny to me that FS20/24 will never ever be suitable to replace it.

20 years from now airbus 400 and boeing 797 pilots will train on FSX.
>>
>>570574265
>>570574398
They care about it as a revenue-generating live-service game, not as an actual flight simulator. Hence the focus on aesthetics, graphics, visuals, and in-cockpit key janglers.
Look at the features that FSX had that 2024 still lacks. This used to be a product built by and for aviation enthusiasts, but Redmond lost the plot.
Austin's autism is a structural pillar of the entire civilian sim sector right now and that's not a great place for the ecosystem to be in. Microsoft used to have a whole team of Austins working on this stuff.

>>
>>570575990
Austin is a moron, he may be passionate about aviation but he doesn't know what he's doing when it comes to the game. X Plane should have capitalised on the period when FSX had overstayed it's welcome and there was no alternative, had they done that they would have become the main civilian flight simulator.
>>
>>570575990
They shut down the original flight sim developer after X, asobo is literally some cheap licensed movie game developer that got to play with the ESP engine source code.

their biggest game before FS20 was the ratatouille game.

>>570576185
I don't know what you think X-plane 10 was? The only real problem is they didn't catch up to 2020's visuals for the normies.
>>
>>570576065
to be fair they just announced VBS4 running on enfusion

I do have to wonder if it will be viable or if the serious VR training will just stick to VBS2.
>>
>>570576642
I'm talking about before 2020, when people still played FSX and P3D despite it being fucking old and shit. Around that time X Plane should have capitalised on the gap by Microsoft (ignoring Microsoft Fl*ght) but it never materialised, people stuck to FSX because there were more addons because more people played it. Love it or hate it, MSFS has set a new standard for flight simulation and X Plane has been left behind. You can pretend that visuals are just for normies, but stock X Plane looks pretty terrible for a modern game, stuff like autoortho should be part of the base game, you shouldn't have to fiddle to get it looking reasonable.

>>
>>570576897
And X-plane 10 came out just a few years after FSX was abandoned, and beat the crap out of it in every single category.

as I said, the problem is XP12 is basically just 10 with some facelifts, they didn't really do major overhauls since then so it looks dated next to 2020 in screenshots. next gen terrain will be too little too late.

It still beats it in everything other than visuals.

>>
>>570603692
2020 had some downgrades, notably in SU5 which was the console launch.

2024 is the worst they've ever been, even on ultra there's this super noticable jittering to them, and they seem to lack multiple scattering and self-shadowing, which was only turned off on medium on 2020.

in fact the whole "photometric lighting" thing has been a huge fail, it looks way less realistic than the old lighting overall, and it just makes the avionics blow out in your face at night all the time. I have to adjust the brightness several times per minute during dusk and dawn just to see, which isn't realistic at all. never had to do that in 2020
>>
>>570605654
they also fucked with the live weather at some point early on. at launch they would generate proper storm clouds and weather fronts, at some point early they changed it and it never generates any weather anymore, now you're lucky to get some rain or fog at the most. it makes flying even in IMC boring as fuck.

You can set custom weather but it breaks down in fast aircraft since it repeats over the whole world.

Maybe make sure you use the live weather option in the world map settings and not only in the in-flight weather window, I don't know.

Still can't really fly IFR or do more than fuck around with unguided munitions like a bush monkey after what feels like an embarrassingly long time and starting to think it might just be mental retardation.
Can do STOL on rough fields and fly point-to-point with a map and compass, can fly helicopters, but can't dogfight worth a shit, can't AAR, and have no fucking clue how radar combat works.

A couple weeks. But I came from a good baseline of Warbird sims and shit like Strike Fighters 2, so a lot of the concepts weren't really that foreign.

I can log in to a server and be a rocket goblin or loft FABs in a Frogfoot with reasonable accuracy, do SEAD in the T-model, do CSAR or CTLD with the helicopters, and be sort of moderately mission-useful doing non-serious PVE in more or less all of the shitty old cold war airframes. Most of what I fly regularly isn't even AAR-capable.
Still feel unprepared for "real" PVP or PVPVE stuff where fucking up actually bothers people.
I feel like I'm not ready to fly with other people until I can do it all backwards in the dark, but don't know how reasonable of a standard that is for the average online player.

It really doesn't bother people, if anything people just appreciate seeing another player since a lot of the time in MP you just take off and then run out of fuel before seeing anyone else. Or you can go on one of the Guns Only dogfight servers and spawn in the air in the middle of a huge furball, and see if you can even survive until your boolets run out.
However shitty you think you are at DCS, you're still probably better than half of the other people flying in MP.

The planes fly better in DCS than in any other sim, full-fidelity in such simple cockpits makes for really complete immersion (especially in VR) and the damage models are better for warbirds than any other aircraft in the sim.
With that said, it's a pretty dead ecosystem, locked into a mismatched 1944-ish lineup with many ahistoric pairings, only two era-appropriate settings (three if you count the second version of the Channel) which don't exactly fit the available aircraft, requires an asset pack, and is basically an entire separate game's worth of upfront investment to get the baseline (mediocre) mission and MP experience.
If you decide to try multiplayer, you're going up against competitively autistic NEETs or retired boomer sweats who have spent roughly 9000 hours exclusively flying either the 109 or the Spitfire and could probably out-dogfight actual WW2 aces in their prime if they could manage to squeeze into a real cockpit without having a heart attack.
Flying props feels really nice, though.

Yeah. Its sad because the planes feel so fucking good to fly compared to Il-2, its not even funny. The D9 in particular has to be my favorite plane ever.
